Lati@s Discussion Thread

Jump, that maybe true, but the game is almost literally based around our tier system. Negleging it may create huge dismay among people who battle more on WiFi than Shoddy, in those uncontrolled environment. I don't support just banning certain ITEMS, so I don't see why not test them without the Soul Dew Clause (although the results would be quite obvious.)

read the first paragraph of my op in the latias suspect test thread and also what umbarsc just said

Not only that but, if it's a championship being held on Wi-Fi, you could just require your opponent to show his/her team right after the battle (setting up a trade invite; you don't need to actually trade); if Lati@s has Soul Dew, well, they should be desclassified.

You enforce Soul Dew clause on WiFi the same way as Sleep Clause, Uber Clause, Species Clause, etcetera. I'd call it common sense, except that seems to be a lacking feature in WiFi players anyway...

So, impressions of Latias so far?

I haven't seen too much action (you know why), but from what I have it hasn't caused any problems that can't be handled. CM sets are either destroyed before they do any serious damage, often only taking out the Pokemon that decides to take her on and revenged while weakened (T-Tar is an exception as most sets will KO Latias).

There was speculation that CB Tar would come back and see a lot of usage, but I haven't seen much of it or much need for it period.

Indeed. I'm not even using Latias and the the TTars rape my team. But my team sucked anyways. Need to rebuild it.

I'm thinking of using Latias as support for a hax team, since Jirachi is already being used as a main haxer. Learns TWave, setups up a screen [my team is weaker physically than special, so Reflect], and Wish passing. Though, it'll only have one attack left, and since my team is already TTar raped [Jirachi/Togekiss/Snorlax/Zapdos (physical defense variant)], I really don't know about doing that. Also want to try one of the Rotom sets, but I don't think it'll cover counters too well.

I think the majority of the CBTars come from people being too afraid of Latias. More afraid than they should be anyways, but probably I see that because my team already had a Blissey. Since I just entered the Platinum metagame, better study up on the changes. >_<

So, impressions of Latias so far?

Latias is great but it has a lot of checks / counters:
Snorlax / T-tar / Scizor / Blissey / jirachi / metagross just to name a few.
I personally love latias and have always been a fan of bulky stat up pokes.

There is no doubt in my mind that Latias is a top tier pokemon, but my prediction is that Latias should (and from asking around most likely will) be voted OU.

I encourage everyone to try the suspect ladder.

Latias is an amazing supporter. However from what I've seen it's easily handled by a ton of things. I didn't even have to switch my team around to deal with it, I just made my CB Tar more offensive. This is top tier OU, and isn't Uber without Soul Dew. With Soul Dew might be a different story.

Before anyone goes "Tyranitar is only common because Latias is so powerful!" think of it this way. People could be using more Tyranitar in _anticipation_ of Latias rather than "I would otherwise be swept by it". It's not an effect of Latias, especially not less than one day into the test, but rather a reaction to the test starting.

^^^ Exactly. And someone on the chat mentioned they made their team counter Latias.

It's pretty much in anticipation. TTar were everywhere, but now they are in even more places than everywhere.

I'm not switching my team around to deal with Latias, I'm switching around to deal with other stuff. XD

I hate to be asking these type of questions, but I've yet to see Latias or Latios on the Smogon Ladder like Skymin, is it being tested differently? Thanks ahead for the answer.

the other solution you wifiers could have to enforcing an item clause is doing calcs to determine if it has soul dew. if it does do *1.5 but acts as if it has specs, it's "effectively the same item" and you can simply "ban when soul dew has a noticeable effect on the battle."

i.e. ban "soul dew having a noticeable effect on battles" this includes different item text after trick/switheroo (save by klutz users) is used on the pokemon, but not if it's item is knocked off.

i guess it becomes complicated on the defensive side though but people should be able to tell a 1.5 diff r__r

Latias is banned on the standard ladder. You must change it to the suspect ladder.

Other arguments I've heard(not sure if mentioned previously) is that it would be to difficult to determine what item it really has and the person could argue it has expert belt or something. Although, I do think we should be able to determine from the defensive side.

Thanks for the replies; I figured it out.

Posted this in the other thread, posting here since I may edit into the OP:

Here to post my awesome Latias set because I haven't made a good team to use it on. However, this is one of the most creative sets you'll find, and its quite fun to use:

Latias (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 152 HP/8 Def/96 Spd/252 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Psycho Shift
- Recover
---

So, I thought of this crap last nite... when I was eager to test Latias. Base 110 Special Attack is phenomenal, especially when you have a nice base 130 Special Defense to switch in on... Then I looked at the potency of Life Orb Milotic and realized something cool... Latias can switch in on Heatran just as easy thanks to the same Special Defense, but also has higher speed, higher special attack and an amazingly bloated base power STAB attack. So why use this over the Calm Mind sweeper? This baby is a 100% tank. Things will take a hurting switching in no doubt, and it can act as a status absorber of some sort with Psycho Shift. Need something to switch into Brawley's annoying Thunderwaving Zapdos? Heres your gal!

So what do the EVs do? Well your stats look like this:

339 HP / 176 Atk / 218 Def / 280 Spe / 350 SpA / 296 SpD

Now, if you want, you can always add more speed. I just figure since I'm not sweeping I don't need as much speed, since I liked the added defense the HP is giving me. I figure its best not to challenge Salamence since A) they won't switch in anyway and B) in order to be positive you outspeed them you need to be Timid anyway and I'd rather not sacrifce all the power. So lets take a look at what kind of punishment this gal gives out!

First, the most important fucker of all... Tyranitar:

Surf vs. Max HP Tyranitar: 41-49%
Draco Meteor vs. Max HP Tyranitar: 45-53%

So basically, I usually Surf on turn 1, meaning that a Max HP Tyranitar has to hope I'm rolling minimum damage to avoid being killed by this combo. So what about Careful Tar? Well, I actually haven't seen to many of those yet since standard Tar is preying on Latias so easily. But in the event I do challenge Careful Tar I'll go for the 3HKO, since a CB Pursuit from 40 Atk Tar will do 39-46% if I stay in, meaning I have a chance to go down fighting.

So what about fucker #2... Scizor. Hmmm, lets take a look:

Again, Surf on your first turn and take a look:

Surf vs. Max HP Scizor: 46-55% (100% 2HKO w/ SR)
Draco Meteor vs. Max HP Scizor: 51-60%

So what kind of things do you whomp with Draco Meteor? Easy, that annoying Zapdos your switching in on:

Draco Meteor vs. Max HP Zapdos: 82-97%

So I encourage all of you to try my fine gal... and happy Tar and Scizor hunting!

Has a Burn Orb and Psycho Shift/Trick set been considered? This is pure theorymon as I have absolutely no Latias experience (having not been on shoddy for over a week), but Cresselia seems to be able to pull it off decently enough to whack Tyranitar.

LR.

Don't think its worth it. Remember Cress is a lot bulkier than Latias. Plus, the concept of Psycho Shift on any Latias set is most likely just to clear itself from status by passing it on.

Latias will work as a good Standard tank simply because it's the fastest Tank.
Also it sets up for a sweep.
110 speed is excellent.

edit:: ....which made me realize that Nidoking isn't a great wallbreaker anymore. Latias might have
some trouble switching in on Ice Beam and Megahorn, but it outspeeds 'King.

I noticed this thread is falling. I know in the Sticky thread people are debating the status of Latias' tier placement. This thread is still available for you guys to discuss your persona experiences of Latias.

So far, I personally am finding her to be an excellent addition into OU.

Im pretty sure it will end up ou from my experience. My only problem so far had been the influx of steels on the suspect ladder.
