Clefable [4N] - (Dual Screen)+

Current Clefable analysis: http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/clefable

I've been testing Clefable for quite a while now as a dual screener in UU, and I have to say that it's very successful and effective.

[SET]
name: Dual Screen
move 1: Reflect
move 2: Light Screen
move 3: Wish / Softboiled / Encore
move 4: Seismic Toss
item: Light Clay
ability: Magic Guard
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Clefable has many chances to come in and set up because of its decent overall bulk and amazing ability. It is an excellent supporter and team player because it almost always successfully sets up the screens. What separates Clefable from other dual screeners is its access to Wish and wide variety of support moves, which most dual screeners lack.

Softboiled is the more realible healing move, although Wish can help your other teammates immensely by restoring 50% of their health on the switch-in. You can run Encore to ruin Pokémon trying to set up on you. On the offensive side, Seismic Toss is your best option to deal a respectable amount of damage since Clefable doesn't have any other viable moves to utilize with this set. Clefable can also make use of Gravity instead of the three moves mentioned so that teammates such as Nidoking, Rhydon, and Torterra can hit Flying-type or Levitating foes with STAB Earthquake. Nidoking's Fire Blast also receives a boost, allowing it to deal considerable damage to Tangrowth and Torterra without fear of missing.

Clefable will generally have trouble against Pokémon that have access to Fighting-type moves. Hitmonlee and Hariyama can threaten Clefable with Close Combat and Force Palm respectively, making Mismagius and Spiritomb excellent partners. They are both immune to Fighting-type attacks and have access to Calm Mind, making it much easier to boost their stats when the screens set up by Clefable are in play. When it comes to dealing damage, Ghost-types can walk right into Seismic Toss and start something nasty such as boosting their stats, but Clefable is able to Encore them if they do so, which gives you a good chance at setting up screens.

I dont know about this set, Clefable basically lures out fighting Pokemon who can and will use Brick Break (which breaks the screens even if the attack does not effect the opponent IIRC).

Well I guess since Break Break isnt _too_ common, its fine. Either way, nice write up.

I have one suggestion, can you put something about Gravity in the Set Comments? Dual Screen + Gravity is amazing with any Sweeper who benefits from Gravity such as: RP Torterra / Rhydon, Agility Blaziken, Nidoking...the list goes on but those are some main ones.

Brick Break isn't that common as you said and most people tend to go for the stronger Fighting attacks. Since Clefable lures in so many Fighters, it gives you a larger chance of switching in resistors that can set up, like Mismagius for example. Gravity does look like a nice option, but I'm not sure yet. I'll wait for more thoughts and opinions.

Clefable has a very wide movepool consisting of various support moves, and this set takes full advantage of Reflect and Light Screen.

Clefable has many chances to come in and set up because of its decent bulkiness and amazing ability. It's capable of coming in on any entry hazard without worry
Get rid of all of this. You don't need to regurgitate "what's good about Clefable" with every single set, this is why we have Opinion sections. We KNOW what Magic Guard does, and how big its movepool is doesn't matter for this set.

The Team Options for this kind of set shouldn't just be "lol it's weak to fighting so pack a ghost". Think about it. This set supports teammates... teammates are Team Options... what kind of teammates want Screen support? Mention them!

@HeYsUp: Brick Break is used so infrequently in UU that to give you a sense of how little it's used BLIZZARD is used more often in UU than Brick Break...

That said, i'm not entirely sure what these EVs are doing. Could you expand upon them a bit more in the set? Are they accomplishing anything in particular or are they just there for "general bulkiness?"

Crobat can stop Clefable from setting up with Taunt, but Seismic Toss takes care of it

Crobat usually has Roost, so it won't be winning any battles like that.

Also, building somewhat on what Chris said:

Ghost-types can walk right into Seismic Toss and start something nasty, giving Clefable a hard time defeating them. So it's best to remove them out of the way early in the game to make Clefable work to its full potential.

"Why?" Ghosts aren't going to be stopping screens, so they don't give it a hard time as advertised. You can encore stat upping, so setup isn't a large deal. Saying ghosts hinder this set is an exaggeration, as you shouldn't even be Seismic Tossing under normal cirumstances, and they do not prevent the set from fulfilling its purpose.

Yea i said that in my post as well.

The main point of my post was to mention Gravity. I used this Clefable a fair bit, and it seriously worked like a charm, dual Screen, gravity, switch to sweeper, sweep with Gravity. Blaziken with Gravity can use Focus Blast to OHKO Regirock, which is cool. Torterra obviously crushes everything except for Shaymin with Earthquake. etc.

Alright, I was kind of lost as to what I should say in the Team Options, so thanks for clearing that up for me.

The EVs just give Clefable equal stats in Def and SpD, so it's pretty much for general bulkiness.

Crobat usually has Roost, so it won't be winning any battles like that.

I forgot about Roost on Crobat. >_<

Mismagius is actually an awesome partner for this set. Once Clefable sets up Screens, it makes Mismagius Subs a ton bulkier, plus it can switch in on Hitmontop and win with Reflect!

Hitmonlee and Hariyama can threaten Clefable with Close Combat and Force Palm respectively

I think you should mention Brick Break somewhere which would generally screw this set up and destroy Dual Screens. You should also mention Crobat as a great partner with this set. It has x4 resistance to fighting attacks and has respectable bulk and threaten these fighting types with Crobat's STAB move.

Yeah, I mentioned Mismagius and Spiritomb already.

I'll probably mention Brick Break, but it's not even that common. I don't know how I'm gonna mention this though...

Fuzznip wants me to upload this, but no comments have been issued in months.

If anyone wants to say anything about the actual set (not just grammar), say it now. Otherwise, I'll upload this tomorrow.

If you want to add the extra safety for Clefable, it's recommended to run Softboiled over Wish so it can heal itself more reliably to set up more screens. Although Wish can help your other teammates immensely by fully healing them upon the switch-in, you can run Encore to ruin Pokémon trying to set up on you if they cause trouble. For the attacking side, Seismic Toss is your best option to deal a respectable amount of damage since Clefable doesn't have any other viable moves to utilize with this set. Clefable can also make use of Gravity instead of the three moves mentioned for Pokémon such as Nidoking, Torterra, and Rhydon to improve their sweeping capabilities.

When it comes to dealing damage, Ghost-types can walk right into Seismic Toss and start something nasty such as boosting their stats, but Clefable is able to Encore away if they do so, which gives you a good chance at setting up screens. With Gravity in play, Nidoking, Rhydon, and Torterra as mentioned above are some of the Pokémon that can benefit greatly from it. Nidoking can use Fire Blast, Thunder, and Blizzard without worry of a miss, while Rock Polish Rhydon and Torterra have no fear of using Earthquake on Levitators or Flyers.
