HGSS Megaspeculation Thread

Hmm? In R/S, they just kept the original 5 HMs from RGBY, and added three new ones on top of that as HM 5-8. Then, in FR-LG, you picked up those same first 5 HMs like normal, but once you beat the game, you could go to the Sevii Islands, and get and use the last three there. In other words, FR/LG and R/S/E used the exact same HMs as each other (and TMs as well). Since they didn't change the HMs/TMs for FR/LG, I don't really think that they will for HG/SS either, and that they'll figure out some other way of handling Whirlpool (and other HM issues) instead.

R/S/E had Dive as HM08, whereas FR/LG only had 7 HMs (up to Waterfall) and didn't use Dive at all. I don't think it's too farfetched for HG/SS to replace Defog with Whirlpool or something like that. To be honest, speculation at this point is pretty pointless, because during the time of the original GSC, Rock Smash wasn't a HM and Dive, Rock Climb and Defog didn't exist. Really anything could be done with the HM list for these new games.

I hope they don't change too much - silver was my first game and i really enjoyed it.
I do think they need a new story - the old game did'nt have a story.

Soul Silver is mine on the day it comes out. Maybe Heart Gold too.

My thoughts/hopes/fantasys:

- Defog's HM will likely be replaced with Whirlpool.

- Headbutting could remain if an unlimited tutor existed (wishful thinking) but very well could be replaced with honey trees.

- Since the Pokegear will likely be present instead of the Poketch, merge the Pokegear with the Vs. Seeker and make it the bottom DS screen.

- Contests should be included SOMEWHERE.

- More builidings should be given a door in Goldenrod. Seriously wtf is a building without a door doing in a city.

- Make Team Rockets plot more interesting. Maybe have Giovanni rejoin once you get to Kanto.

- Apricorns MUST remain. Screw berries if required. Nothing beats the pure epicness of Kurt making you a Pokeball made from an acorn/apricot.

- Along with Kurt, more Pokeball stuff should be emphasized. More seals and perhaps a feature that let's you change a Pokemons pokeball. Deleting the old one of course so Master Ball swapping couldn't be abused.

- Don't cripple Kanto. No new areas are needed, nor is a frontier really. I just want Kanto in all it's Safari Zone, Pokemon (Radio) Tower, Silph Co. glory. Perhaps add things (like contests or GTS or something) to Saffron. Like Goldenrod, it also suffers from no-door-building syndrome.

- Red is a stupid note to end the game on (no offense). Revamp Mt. Silver to something interesting and I'd be happy.

- Extremespeed Dratini please. I just want it for memory's sake.

- GS Wi-Fi event please.

- More reasons to revisit places. DPPt did a great job with this. If not enough freebies/dailys are added then I'll have little to no reason to not just bike between Goldenrod and Olivine. Except Kurt. I'd walk through Mt. Coronet for him.

Post-game Neo Team Rocket plot? :nerd:

That'll introduce a semi-new team, Mask of Ice (if you don't follow the manga then I wont spoil who it is) and I think it'll make a really interesting post-plot happening in Kanto (which is hopefully dropped for Hoenn).

And come on, he has a freaking Delibird on his team.

Neo Team Rocket and Hoenn are wishful thinking though. ): Hopefully GF/Nintendo can follow through.

Only a few hours till we get more info right?

I am actually hoping for a Whirlpool HM. In addition to all the new Hoenn and Sinnoh pokemon, it might have a lot more viable users now. There might even be a place for a Whirlpool/DD Gyarados, who traps something ineffectual and DD's up. Same with Fergy and Poliwrath, really.

HGSS has a ton of potential for movepool expansion, especially among the forgotten GSC Generation pokemon.

The problem with Chuck giving out Drain Punch is, of course, the only Fighting-type pokemon in the original 251 that can even learn it is Hitmonchan. Focus Punch makes way more sense. And it helps that it's TM 01, too :P
Well, the only Fighting-types available in DP that learn it are Medicham and Lucario (and their prevos). Gallade is added in Platinum.
Which reminds me, looks like Serebii said on his forums that Prof. Oak says in DPPt (or at least Platinum) that the white rock in Sinnoh has a counterpart in Kanto. Is it true? And if so, does RBY/FRLG/GSC even HAD a white rock?
There isn't such a rock in any of the previous games with Kanto, but there probably will be in this game.
Apricorns will probably stay, at least I hope. We can't go screwing over Kurt.
Ragecandybar is currently avaliable in the basement of the Platinum department store, i believe.
No, someone says they're out of Ragecandybars, but they never get them back in stock. But Platinum added things that aren't compatible with DP. Just have the Apricorn balls appear as normal PokéBalls when playing against DPP and have them and the Ragecandybars (and any other Gen 2 items that they took out in Gen 3 and decide to put back) be untradeable over wi-fi. (On local it can tell which game the other person has.)

And what's with all the "I hope it's real" posts on this page? Somehow I doubt that Nintendo released fake information on its official website....

Not forgetting, if I recall correctly, Flash was a HM in GSC rather than a TM.

Speaking about Mt. Coronet, I wonder if we will be able to obtain certain evolutions like Probopass, or if we will be stuck with trading them like Milotic in Fr/Lg.

Good question. I can see the Moss Rock being implemented in the Ilex Forest and the Ice Rock being placed in that ice cave on the way to Blackthorn. Gamefreak are Eevee fappers after all. Not so sure about Magnezone or Probopass.

Mask of Ice is probably won't happen. From what I vaguely remember, Mask of Ice = Pryce, and Will and Karen are henchpeople. It's about as likely as Sabrina, Lt. Surge and Koga being Rocket members.

I guess we can't really expect the legendary birds to still be in Hoenn, since they apparently flew to Sinnoh, but if they were, man... synchable birds! :)

Something that really has me excited is that we're most likely finally going to get some new official artwork by Ken Sugimori for all the 2nd gen sprites. His style of drawing has completely changed since the original GS work was done, and they really look off compared to the newer artwork.

Sadly, Diving may be gone forever...
OK, this is not sad at all. Ideally, you'd never have to have more than 4 HMs on the same team (in original R/B/Y Flash was basically useless, so you only really had 4). It's one of the dumbest aspects of the game that you have to either replace lots of precious moveslots or an entire team member just to lug around near useless skills (Surf/Waterfall are really the only 2 you'd ever want on a poke).

In G/S/C, Rock Smash was only a TM (terrible considering you actually used it out of combat), and they added useless whirlpool and (at that time) useless Waterfall (less base power than surf and still special). If they add the fog mechanic from D/P/Pt, I will destroy them, it was the dumbest thing I could ever think of, ESPECIALLY when it didn't completely replace flash as that "useless thing that you need maybe 2-3 times in the game and does nothing special in combat" move.

If they actually have wised up to the problems with previous games, they'll let you use items (like the HMs themselves) to solve those bloody problems and make teaching them optional, that way you can actually use a decent team while playing.

I've always viewed Pokemon as an RPG rather than a kid's game, even though that was its target audience, and I would also have liked to have a more complex storyline. Complex doesn't necessarily mean mature, there are plenty of RPGs with complex storylines that aren't mature: the Final Fantasy series and Chrono Trigger come to mind. Something beyond the typical "Hi, we're evil, no real reason, just evil." That and I'd like to see some actual plot in Kanto. Original G/S/C it was really just 8 more Gyms you had to beat for no real reason, with almost nothing between them.

Bleh, but I'm an old codger, so take whatever I have to say with a grain of salt.

Ok d2m, you just go and have your own little random rant in a corner. I'm just really looking forward to getting some more details of the game as its likely they'll add some other island to the game as they did that in FR/LG.

Adding a new island region would make HGSS too big imo, it would set the standards too high for 5th gen. Even though Kanto can barely be counted as a "region" now as everybody and their mother has been to Kanto 200 times, I don't see islands being added. If Kanto is crippled though, a mini region should be added.

However, I can see extra features/areas being added to Johto/Kanto.

- Contests should be included SOMEWHERE. Kanto!

- More builidings should be given a door in Goldenrod. Seriously wtf is a building without a door doing in a city. I think most of the cities and towns must get a deep revamp, and having more things, it would be lame to port Johto exactly the same

- Make Team Rockets plot more interesting. Maybe have Giovanni rejoin once you get to Kanto.something must be done to explain Giovanni.Probably use the hint they gave us in FR/LG about Silver(the rival) being his son (like in pokemon special)

- Apricorns MUST remain. Screw berries if required. Nothing beats the pure epicness of Kurt making you a Pokeball made from an acorn/apricot.Apricorns should stay they were important back then, i think they will be used in silver and gold to make some cool balls, i'm just puzzled at how will they make these compatible with the other games, like say if you use an apricorn ball on a pokemon and you trade it to DPPt there it would look like it was captured with a regular pokeball, but in HG/SS it would look like the arpicorn ball

- Red is a stupid note to end the game on (no offense). Revamp Mt. Silver to something interesting and I'd be happy.Red is cool, but maybe Mt. Silver should get more trainers (ace trainers, cool trainers you name it)

I liked your ideas.

Wait wait wait, for the time GSC was released it was really good, this remake won't ruin the Johto experience(you can always play the real GSC games) this reamake won't bring back GSC to his former glory, it doesn't mean it has to suck either, is just nostalgia and introduction to new players (post GSC) to the games.

These are two things totally apart.

Actually most GSC games have become physically impossible to play, as the internal battery dies in about seven years. Out of my Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions, only my Silver is still able to keep a save file.

cant wait for these games. I'm just hoping they dont ruin how Jhoto was. Also hoping for Kanto to still be in it (should add some form of story to it though :P). im definitley getting SoulSilver though.

Yes, G/S/C were my favorite games, and I definately love the idea of a remake. A few things they should keep in mind:

Full revamp of all areas - They need to revamp G/S/C like how they revamped Kanto's graphics, and maybe add more buildings, events, secret areas, etc.

Make Kanto worthwhile - The only purpose of Kanto was to just challenge 8 more gym leaders with no story or plot between, seriously. Add useful plot devices, perhaps add a new subplot relating to Team Rocket and new legendaries.

New Legendaries - This is a great option to add flavor to Kanto and make it more interesting to play. Since the DSi doesn't have a GBA slot, they seem like they want to add all the old legendaries that you can't catch in DPPt into the 4th generation games. They should add some of the Hoenn or Kanto legendaries into the game, and not as events.

Make a Celebi Event - No point restating people's reasons for this one, just add the GS ball event or something and give it out over WiFi.

Those are just some of my ideas

Pokemon Sunday starts in about 3 hours. Finishes in about 4 hours. However, don't expect any actual information until Coro Coro comes out (Friday). There's a good chance the info will be leaked around Monday or Tuesday though.

I forgot about this - it could definitely be picked up on. How though? I'm not sure.

Yup. Just as Rotom reverts with DP, Apricorn balls will likely revert with DPPt.

I suppose. I just remember the feelings of disappointment after beating Red. "..." and nothing more is a very frustrating thing to hear when you just technically "beat" the game.

In-game Celebi without an event would be nice but Gamefreak/Nintendo would never ever do that. It hasn't been done yet with Mew/Celebi/Jirachi/Manaphy/Shaymin. At this point I'm wiling to accept any kind of mass Celebi availability.

My memory is vague, but Slowpoketails were for sale in the Mahogany Rocket Base, correct? Those could be removed for the sake of not being too important. I also have this feeling that the "Ragecandybars are all sold out" running gag will be continued, like it has been since FR/LG. Berserk Gene would be lovely but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'd also want the cell phone feature of the Pokegear to be improved upon. Not removed, though. I thought it was the coolest thing ever when the bike store called me and said I could keep the bike as a thank-you for all the advertising (hey, I was like 6). More radio stations would be nice. I loved being able to change the music to the Rocket theme no matter where I was. It made me feel badass.

Can't wait for Pokemon Sunday. Have they ever released info on a game before any other source (especially CoroCoro) though?

Like I said, Coro Coro has dibs on the bulk of the information. We'll get most of it whenever Coro Coro gets released. Pokemon Sunday might have a bit of footage or trailer or something though as it's a tv show and the emphasis obviously lies with video for them.

I just need some clarification here - when you talk about the Apricorn Poke Balls, are you thinking of the original ones (like the Heavy Ball, Moon Ball, and the like)? Because these balls either already exist (Fast Ball = Quick Ball now) or can be transferred to new ones.

I do 90% of my catching with Dusk Balls, so if it gets tossed out of the remakes I'm going to punch something.

Actually Fast Balls and Quick Balls are different if memory serves. I think Fast Balls are increased chance to capture things that run such as Suicune, Entei, and Raikou.

Yes they did. Shaymin's Oak's Letter is being distributed over Wi-Fi Mystery Gift right now (japanese Platinum only for now, though).

Yeah, that's what people are talking about. And yeah, some of there are still there, although with different names, like you said. But there is nothing that's really like the Heavy Ball or the Moon Ball; they'd have to change them to completely different things, that would have nothing to do with weight or how a Pokemon evolves. And that's personally a shame, as I really rather liked the Heavy Balls; really great for catching things like Snorlax and legendaries, more so than even Dusk Balls. Sure, they could change them to something that's still fitting for the Apricorn's/Berry's color/description, but I'd really rather them find some way to keep them in, if possible.
