My new team

With the coming of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, I decided to make a new team due to my excitement. It's far from perfect, and I would appreciate it if someone could share some useful hints/tips.

I fought extensively with this team on Shoddy last night, and would say that I won half the matches and lost the other half, so there's obviously problems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roserade (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Leaf Storm
- Toxic Spikes
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sleep Powder
---
She's the lead. Focus Sash allows me to absorb hits so that I can guarantee at least one layer of Toxic Spikes every battle. Sleep Power is there to disable any leads. If they decide to switch, at least I have one layer of TSpikes down. If they don't, I'll be able to add more layers.

Gengar (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Trick
---
Gengar acts as a late-game revenge-killer for me. It has the decent speed and SpAtt to clean up any mess after my other heavy hitters fall. Trick is a nasty surprise for Pokemon who are trying to stall. It also offers me more versatility lategame if I feel like I can handle the rest of the remaining Pokemon without the boost.

Bronzong @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP/86 Atk/80 Def/92 SDef
Sassy nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Explosion
---
I decided to go with Bronzong to absorb most of the attacks. Stealth Rock is there to add additional damage along with TSpikes. With the two working together, my heavy-hitting sweepers should be able to come in and OHKO weaken Pokemon.

Flygon (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- U-turn
- Outrage
---
He's my strongest physical hitter. CB Outrage is just devastating. With TSpikes and SR support, Flygon shouldn't have any trouble OHKOing weaken Pokemon. Fire Blast is there to scare off annoying steel Pokemon like Skarmory and Forretress.

Machamp (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 HP/252 Atk/4 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dynamicpunch
- Ice Punch
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
---
While my Flygon is a heavier hitter, Machamp is definitely bulkier. Yesterday on Shoddy, I found that a lot of players had a hard time taking him out. Dynamic Punch utilizes the No Guard Ability, and adds confusion. Rest and Sleep Talk are the moves that make him bulky. It also helps him absorb status afflictions.

I faced a few Tyranitars, and most of them were KOed by my Machamp, so I feel like he was good at countering them.

Starmie @ Expert Belt
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
---
Starmie's move pool can cover many types. It already has the BoltBeam combo, which cause many super-effectives. With it's versatile movepool, opponents should be switching out constantly to avoid a super-effective. This will only help since I have TSpikes and SR set on the field.

If they don't switch, they'll probably have to face a super-effective powered by Expert Belt or a STAB Hydro Pump, which isn't pretty.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

While I wouldn't say that I'm new to the Pokemon metagame, since I played a lot competitively against others when the game first released, I'm far from being pro. I still have a lot to learn and would appreciate any insights.

Thanks!

Few things need changing

Roserade: Is a fairly decent lead but i dont think your team plays toxic spikes to its full potential, usually spikes are only used to help set up special sweepers deal with Blissey a little easier and to beat random stuff like Suicune w/o rest.

Brongzong could probably be used as a lead, and you could replace Roserade with something like a Celebi who can stall things out with leech seed.

Celebi @ Leftovers
252 HP/ 220 Def/ 36 Speed Bold
- Grass Knot
- Leech Seed
- Recover
- HP Fire

I think you need HP Fire to lure in Scizor and KO it as nothing really likes switching into CB Uturns on your team. Celebi also gives you another (somewhat) decent Gyarados and Lucario counter
__________

You dont really have a decent DD Gyarados counter. your Starmie can handle it to an extent yes but Adamant LO Bounce does 84% - 99.6% which can KO after Stealth Rock. To remedy this you can swap Fire Blast on Flygon for Thunder Punch, thunderpunch has a good chance to KO Gyarados after SR and without intimidate, whearas Fire Blast is pretty much for skarm and maybe Scizor, wheras Gengar and Starmie can easily handle skarmory.

Your descriptions could use a little work.

Gengar (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Trick
You should use a Choice Scarf on Gengar. Although it seems rather stupid, it actually gives you a chance to stop DDers (Read Gyarados) in their tracks. Mence and Dos would love to switch in, set up and then sweep your team. If you use a Scarf, go with a Timid Nature.

Starmie @ Expert Belt
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
I suggest you use a Life Orb as the item. Also, what's the deal with Psychic? Its a STAB move yes but it doesn't gain you that much coverage. I suggest you use Rapid Spin over Psychic. This gives you a way to deal with Entry Hazards which could annoy your team. I also suggest using Recover over either Ice Beam or Thunderbolt.

Also note that I agree with pretty much everything that Masterchef has said already.

6. Formatting. Make your post readable. If the format is messy and illegible you will not be likely to receive help and may have your thread locked. Adding pictures to your post can make it more visually appealing too, but pay attention to rule 11. Here is a guideline on how to post each Pokemon.

11. Put some effort into the presentation of your RMT. Adding tasteful, reasonably sized pictures of your Pokemon is encouraged as it helps with legibility. Note that this is entirely up to the discretion of the mods.

Ok, as for the team.

You have Trick on a Choice Specs Gengar. As soon as you use it, you'll have to switch because Choice Specs will lock you into that move. If you want to keep the set, change the item to Wise Glasses.
If not, switch Trick to HP Ice or Explosion.

I agree with "Master Chef" on Bronzong and Roserade. And with A lot of teams running an an Azelf as a lead these days, I think that you may have a problem with your Roserade, as Azelf will either SR or use Psychic / Fire Blast on his first turn, so you either have to stricke first with Leaf Storm, or excpect have your Focus Sash broken really fast.

I'm not too sure that you have practised with this team, because otherwise you'd would know that a Choice item locks you into a move, so if you want to change pokemon, you'll have to switch, quite a bit, so you'll need a Rapid Spinner. I suggest;

Starmie @ Leftovers
Timid
136 HP / 156 Def / 216 Spe

Rapid Spin
Surf / Hydro Pump
Thunderbolt
Recover

Although it takes away from your coverage, you now have no problem with SR Spikes and TSpikes.
It's up to you.

Why does he need a rapid spinner? his whole team is immune to spikes and Toxic Spikes bar Machamp, Starmie and (potentially Celebi) if he decides to go with it, and they can heal themselves or get rid of status via natural cure. I think you could probably use that Starmie set with Ice beam over Recover for a bit more coverage.

Also what you say about Choice items is wrong, once it has been tricked away you are free to switch moves

I'll definitely consider switching out Roserade for Celebi and making Bronzong the lead. It sounds like it'll help my team a lot.

And now that you guys mention Psychic for Starmie, I've never really use that move a lot compared to its other moves. And SR and Spikes have been quite a nuisance, so I'll probably switch Psychic out for Rapid Spin.

I'm starting to like Sheshi's idea for switching out the specs for a scarf on my Gengar too. Since he's suppose to be the revenge-killer, it'll help that I'll be able to outspeed many Pokemon.

Lots of useful information. Thanks a lot, everyone! I'll make the changes and see how well I'll do.

If you do use Bronzong as a lead, you should watch out for Taunt Leads as they can really screw Zong over if it tries to set up DS or even SR.

I'm definitely doing better now. My win-lose ratio is looking better, and for the matches where I do lose, most of them are close ones.

Thanks again for all the help.
