With the coming of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, I decided to make a new team due to my excitement. It's far from perfect, and I would appreciate it if someone could share some useful hints/tips.
I fought extensively with this team on Shoddy last night, and would say that I won half the matches and lost the other half, so there's obviously problems.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roserade (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Leaf Storm
- Toxic Spikes
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sleep Powder
---
She's the lead. Focus Sash allows me to absorb hits so that I can guarantee at least one layer of Toxic Spikes every battle. Sleep Power is there to disable any leads. If they decide to switch, at least I have one layer of TSpikes down. If they don't, I'll be able to add more layers.
Gengar (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Trick
---
Gengar acts as a late-game revenge-killer for me. It has the decent speed and SpAtt to clean up any mess after my other heavy hitters fall. Trick is a nasty surprise for Pokemon who are trying to stall. It also offers me more versatility lategame if I feel like I can handle the rest of the remaining Pokemon without the boost.
Bronzong @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP/86 Atk/80 Def/92 SDef
Sassy nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Explosion
---
I decided to go with Bronzong to absorb most of the attacks. Stealth Rock is there to add additional damage along with TSpikes. With the two working together, my heavy-hitting sweepers should be able to come in and OHKO weaken Pokemon.
Flygon (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- U-turn
- Outrage
---
He's my strongest physical hitter. CB Outrage is just devastating. With TSpikes and SR support, Flygon shouldn't have any trouble OHKOing weaken Pokemon. Fire Blast is there to scare off annoying steel Pokemon like Skarmory and Forretress.
Machamp (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 HP/252 Atk/4 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dynamicpunch
- Ice Punch
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
---
While my Flygon is a heavier hitter, Machamp is definitely bulkier. Yesterday on Shoddy, I found that a lot of players had a hard time taking him out. Dynamic Punch utilizes the No Guard Ability, and adds confusion. Rest and Sleep Talk are the moves that make him bulky. It also helps him absorb status afflictions.
I faced a few Tyranitars, and most of them were KOed by my Machamp, so I feel like he was good at countering them.
Starmie @ Expert Belt
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
---
Starmie's move pool can cover many types. It already has the BoltBeam combo, which cause many super-effectives. With it's versatile movepool, opponents should be switching out constantly to avoid a super-effective. This will only help since I have TSpikes and SR set on the field.
If they don't switch, they'll probably have to face a super-effective powered by Expert Belt or a STAB Hydro Pump, which isn't pretty.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
While I wouldn't say that I'm new to the Pokemon metagame, since I played a lot competitively against others when the game first released, I'm far from being pro. I still have a lot to learn and would appreciate any insights.
Thanks!
