The burning booby & the most absorbent of all Tadpoles [UU]

Hey everyone, it's Boingo (who?), presenting to you his latest UU team. Actually it's not all that new. I used it extensively after Froslass and Raikou dropped back into UU, and haven't really used it since Cresselia came to town because of a sudden lack of motivation to play. Of course, being made by me, it's far from perfect, but I still managed to have some decent success with it. And now behold:

Team
The Burning Booby and the most absorbent of all Tadpoles!!

This Team was originally planned to be completely built around Magmortar, but then turned out to be a kind of Magmortar/Poliwrath joint venture. INTRIGUED YET? I BET YOU ARE! THIS IS AWESOME LET'S GO!!

TEAM BUILDING PROCESS:

I wanted to make a Team that used Magmortar, because he’s one of my favorites and I hadn’t included him in my teams for some time.

dpicon467.png
dpicon344.png

I tried to find the best possible supporters for Magmortar. First I added Claydol for its ability to take the strong Rock, Ground and Fighting Type Attacks that Magmortar hates, and also because I wanted a Rapid Spinner.

Next I chose Meganium, to take Water Attacks aimed at my VIP Fire Type, and to support my team with Aromatherapy and Reflect.

With the “core” of my team established, I went for the lead Pokémon. This was when Froslass was dropped back into UU and every lead just HAD to be prepared for it. I went with Sharpedo for its ability to deal with Froslass and screw over slower setup leads with Taunt, and because I found its surprise factor to be more appealing than Ambipoms predictability.

I knew from previous battles that Magmortar is a freaking AZUMARILL MAGNET, so I wanted something that could switch into a Choice Banded Aqua Jet with impunity and immediately exploit it. Poliwrath was the perfect choice with its great typing and ability.

Unfortunately this team still had a couple big problems. My two biggest problems were the lack of a good Ambipom (or Fake Out) switch-in, and a Swellow counter. I first thought of Aggron, but it couldn’t take Ambipom’s Low Kick and dumb grin at all, so I went with Rhyperior.

The first version of this team did fairly well, but Meganium kept running into trouble with…stuff I don’t remember now. However, I desperately needed the Grass resist, so I still didn’t want to replace Meganium until I found out that with HGSS, Encore + Reflect + Aromatherapy had become a legal move combination for Jumpluff. So I replaced Meganium with Jumpluff, and now MOST of my troubles were over.

SHARPEDO@Focus Sash
Jolly | Rough Skin
252 Atk, 252 Spe, 6 HP
~ Crunch
~ Aqua Jet
~ Earthquake
~ Taunt

So your lead is a Japanese ice ghost? Well, I have a Shark. >:-I

...THAT EATS GHOSTS!! :-O

The combination of Crunch + Aqua Jet deals with sashed leads like Froslass and Alakazam. Taunt messes up (and actually still surprises) slow setup Pokes, especially the likes of Registeel, Spiritomb and Cloyster. Although Intimidate Arcanine can be a bother, it still won‘t enjoy taking Earthquakes and Aqua Jets. I have to switch out of Ambipom, but actually Cacturne is this Pokes worst nemesis, but it‘s uncommon. Altogether this is a great lead, and if it lives past the first three turns, which happens more often than one might think, it‘s still highly useful having strong Priority and a fast Taunt available midgame.

CLAYDOL@Leftovers
Bold | Levitate
252 HP, 156 Def, 102 SpAtk
~ Earth Power
~ Ice Beam
~ Rapid Spin
~ Stealth Rock

Pretty standard, but heeeeeere we go anyway. I use Claydol for its awesome synergy with Magmortar, since it can take Rock, Fighting and Ground Type attacks all day long, while simultaneously doing the dishes by means of telepathy and also spinning away rocks and spikes that many of my team members hate. I actually don‘t care much for Stealth Rocks, but Claydol sets them up anyway because Arcanine, Moltres and Scyther are real pests. Some special attack EVs help it dealing with things like Rhyperior, Donphan, and enemy Claydol.

MAGMORTAR@Expert Belt
Timid | Flame Body
252 SpAtk, 252 Spe, 6 SpDef
~ Flamethrower
~ Thunderbolt
~ Focus Blast
~ Hidden Power (Grass)

The first of our two heroes from the Title. This Magmortar is purely special because I don‘t like compromising its awesome Special Attack, so no Cross Chop shenanigans for you today Billy. Instead, it gets Focus Blast to hit even harder and miss even more often!! Yeah the accuracy is a letdown and a gamble but I need it for Clefable and Houndoom...and Probopass/Bastiodon, I guess.

No Hidden Power Ice either. I want to be able to instantly dispose of Rhyperior, as well as tear through potentially annoying Quagsire and Gastrodon. Altaria can go eat a ham.

JUMPLUFF@Leftovers
Jolly | Chlorophyll
252 Spe, 252 Hp, 6 Atk
~ Aerial Ace
~ Encore
~ Reflect
~ Aromatherapy/Sleep Powder

At first I used a Cleric Meganium in this spot, but it kept running into trouble. My team in general was also having problems with SubSeeders, powerful Grass Type attacks, and substitue+setup Pokes like Mismagius. BUT THEN ONE DAY this Jumpluff slowly descended from the skies and solved pretty much all of these problems at once. Encore is just an all around useful and evil move, Aerial Ace helps against those dreaded SubSeeders. I also wanted Reflect in this team to help out Magmortar with its weak defense, and Jumpluff could even do that! I‘d like to use Aromatherapy as the 4th move, but since someone is very busy not updating the illegal movesets on Shoddy Battle, I‘m currently using Sleep Powder.

RHYPERIOR@Lum Berry
Jolly | Solid Rock
252 Atk, 252 Spe, 6 Def
~ Stone Edge
~ Earthquake
~ Megahorn
~ Rock Polish

Although, in my humble opinion, Torterra has the better Rock Polish set, I need Rhyperior for its much needed resistances to Flying and Normal Type attacks (Read: SWELLOW COUNTER). Besides saving my team from being swept by Swellow, this Pokés job is just plain, heavy offense. Lum Berry can buy me an extra turn of Setup or Attacking when facing Mons like Spiritomb, and basically that‘s the whole deal. I’d like to try a more defensive version of Rhyperior, but I’m worried about losing too much offensive power.

POLIWRATH@Leftovers
Adamant | Water Absorb
252 HP, 252 ATK, 6 SpDef
~ Focus Punch
~ Payback
~ Encore
~ Substitute

Now this guy just by accident happened to become the glue that holds this team together aka. the second star of the show. If it gets a Substitude up, something’s going to get crippled. Payback is not usually recommended on this set, but I use it to get rid of Ghosts that block Claydol’s spinning attempts and try to absorb my Focus Punch (and so I can actually hurt Uxie/Mesprit/Claydol). Speaking of Focus Punch, it really puts a dent in everything that’s not a Ghost or a sturdy floating stupid psychic totally BL Moonduck. If Poli can not defeat its switch-in on its own, Encore helps another team member to switch in safely. Most often, Poliwrath is my MVP.

Altogehter, I really love this team. It’s very fun to play with almost no bog standard sets or Pokémon, and I somehow managed to cover a lot of stuff. One big issue that remains is: Weather teams. While this team can deal with Hail/Sand teams surprisingly decent, Sun teams are difficult to handle and Rain teams can become a nightmare if I can’t stall out their Rain turns with clever switching. It’s a drawback I’d be ready to accept though, because this team is just too much fun against everything that’s not a Rain Team. I also realize I have a bit of a problem if Feraligatr gets a Dragon Dance in, but so far my team somehow managed to not get eaten alive by it. But whatever, rate away already, and thanks for your attention.

Not bad. I think I can help make it better, though.

First thing I noticed was a Cresselia weakness. While Poliwrath can deal with Cressy, I can't see you wanting to switch in to a Psychic any time soon. A small change to Rhyperior's set might help with this:

Rhyperior@Leftovers/Lum Berry
Adamant Nature
132 HP / 192 Atk / 16 SpD / 168 Spe
-Substitute
-Earthquake
-Stone Edge
-Swords Dance/Megahorn

Sub allows you to set up against Flying-types as Swellow only does a max 20.3% with U-Turn. It also prevents status like Toxic or WoW from taking you down. Swords Dance or Megahorn can go in the final slot. SD gives you more power, while Megahorn nets SE damage against Cressy. SD would be my pick though, as you would lose less power.

I can see why your team has trouble with RD Ludicolo; after RD and LO damage, it sweeps no problem. Your team can handle the physical side of an RD team OK with Poliwrath holding its own against Kabutops and company. Meganium probably was decent in this role, but is only a stopgap measure. I think Venusaur would work well here, but I see you loath to use it on this team as it was the #1 pokemon in the UU tier usage wise before Cresselia changed things. The best option probably is to replace Jumpluff with Chansey. Here is the set

Chansey@Leftovers
Calm
252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Aromatherapy
Softboiled
Toxic
Seismic Toss

Toxic works wonders against RD pokemon. With most Ludicolo holding LO, Toxic is the last thing they want. You can then stall them out with Softboiled until the rain stops or they go down with Toxic. Aromatherapy is to replace Jumpluff's attempt at becoming a cleric.

I also see a huge problem with four pokes weak to grass. Since I took out Jumpluff, I can't see your team handling physical grass types well. Rapid Spin Claydol might help your team, but I see it as a ghost magnet with little else redeeming about it. I think Mesprit can do its job even better and support both of your stars:

Mesprit@Leftovers
Bold Nature
252 HP, 220 DEF, 36 SAtk
-Thunder Wave
-Reflect
-Ice Beam
-Stealth Rock

Thunder Wave is for parahax abuse and works well with Encore Poliwrath. Reflect helps Magmortar survive longer. Ice Beam is for Grass-types and Donphan. SR is a necessity for any UU team. I think you will find Mesprit easier to switch in and provide more synergy than Claydol. Thunderbolt is another option over Thunder Wave or Ice Beam if you want to deal with DD Feraligatr.

I run that same Magmortar set on my team and it works wonders. Only difference is Life Orb over Expert Belt, but I can see why yours is different.

Good luck with the team. Hope I helped without taking too much of the old team away.

Sharpedo: What does EQ help you with? Arcanine? They won't stay in on a Sharpedo anyway. I think you should run Protect over EQ and your Ambipom (Fake Out) troubles are over!

Jumpluff: It can't attack for nuts. SubSeeders? You're immune to Leech Seed so Encore!! (Watch out for Sceptile HP Ice though) Just run Aromatherapy and Sleep Powder.

Thanks melonhead, I'm going to try all your suggestions. Mesprit looks especially interesting, although taking out Rapid Spin might prove to be a bad decision.

Even though Protect > Earthquake sounds temtping, EQ is great to have in case Magneton or Drapion switch in. It also gives me something to actually hurt Registeel.

I don't understand why they would switch in in the first place, while Protect guarantees you beat almost all leads. Registeel you should be Taunting and running away from... When I see any of the 3 Pokemon you mentioned up there, I go straight to Rhyperior...
