No offense but RNG too complicated for a 10+ game. I think I will do it the long way.

As for Milktank..She needs speed IVs? Im making a cleric one btw.

Assuming you have a 31 IV in speed, it only needs 32 EV's in order to outrun jolly TTar (but that won't help you much)
So no, Miltank usually doesn't need Speed. Focus more on HP and the defenses.

bog standards, nuff said, if you are new to competitive pokemon you are better off using a team full of standard pokemons with standard sets, once you get the hang of the metagame, you can start making your own stuff.

Could you simplify this post at all? Standard pokemon and standard sets? What would be a good Standard set to begin with? And Metagame?

oh boy, this is gonna be hard...ok, i am going to try to explain. or rather, show.

http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70957

from 1 to 15 are bog standards, top-tier used pokemons.

http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/

search the pokemons here, normally the first set is the standard one

and for the metagame...well i dont knot exactly how to explain that, the metagame is pretty much the status of competitive pokemon at the moment, for example, in today metagame scizor is a top tier pokemon because of its ability to scout and trap pokemons, while revenge killing with a powerful priority move.

So you recommend any pokemon I choose from the top 15?

well, top 20 actually, but you are free to use anything that fits the style of team you want, for the moment though i sugest you use standards, i am not the best teacher since i learned everything alone, but i think that you should use standards for the moment.

edit:yes, what ericcc said.

I think he means to do that first so you'll get acquainted with the competitive metagame first, and then once you're comfortable and have learned what exactly it is and how everything works, try and make your own team.

Ok, on Starmie's DP Analysis, the comment under the Choice Specs set states:

STAB Surf from Starmie threatens to 2HKO Tyranitar, making Pursuit no problem at all for a normally vulnerable Starmie.
Um ... how exactly does that work? Assuming Scarf Tyranitar switches in on Starmie's Surf and takes a massive hit, it's still faster than Starmie and can checkmate it with Pursuit and Crunch.

Anyways, I was thinking of how best to combat Scarf-Tar with Starmie, and I deduced that the best and perhaps only way is to OHKO it as it switches in. Specs'd Hydro Pump is easily able to OHKO Tyranitar assuming Stealth Rock is down. However, Hydro Pump is rather inaccurate and cannot be relied on in an endgame sweep (something that Starmie excels at IMO). With this in mind, I've come up with the following set:

Starmie @ Choice Specs
Timid 4HP / 252SpA / 252Spe
~Hydro Pump
~Surf
~Ice Beam
~Thunderbolt

With this set, Hydro Pump is a guarenteed OHKO on T-Tar with Stealth Rock down. Surf provides a reliable option with which to sweep endgame without relying on Hydro Pump's shoddy accuracy and PP. Thunderbolt and Ice Beam complete the coverage, hitting everything except Lanturn neutrally.

The drawback of this set is its inability to get past Blissey (no trick). Also, things like T-tar can switch in after a kill and slay Starmie.

What do you guys think about this set? Is sacrificing Trick for Hydro Pump and Surf worth it?

Alright. Thanx for the help but i have one last question. (unless more come up)

When I'm catching or trading for my first team of pokemon. Should I stress about there starting stats? Or just focus on the EV training, and that will cancel whatever stats they have when I first catch them?

EDIT :: and I dont level each pokemon up to Lvl 100 do I? I just stop when the EVs are maxed out?

When I started making my team, i started with ninjask, just because i thought it would be good (I didn't know much back then). I only have one other lead I've bred, so I suggest you get a good lead first. then pick a pokemon on the given top 20 that has good synergy with the lead. Then another with good synergy again (and by that I mean resist each other weaknesses). When I started, I bred A Metagross and a flygon because thy had perfect synergy. Those three were the base of my team, and all are pretty good. keep picking pokemon with good synergy and eventually just test it out once its ready. If you think Its not doing as well as planned, pick another pokemon. Just get a decent selection of stuff and test stuff out a bit. Good luck.

I would start out breeding for natures, don't worry about IV's too much, as long as they are decent (20+ in the needed stats). They dont need to be flawless like in the stores you see on wifi. Then focus on ev training, which is more important.

I think you just focus on EV'ing them and as time goes on you'll learn more about natures/ IV's, etc.

Everything I've searched for (not extensive, but a couple sources) say that you can pass 2 IV's using Power items in HGSS. My current breed I tried passing HP from the father and Def from the mother using power items, and none of the three offspring I hatched had both. One or the other, not both.

Has anyone figured out the exact mechanic of power items in breeding yet? Or at least a simple answer as to why it didn't work?

Learn RNG abuse and then you can hatch something with IV's that look like this;
31/31/31/31/31/31 :D

Oh sorry, my answer was very un specific.
No, once you reach the maximum 510 EV's a Pokemon can achieve, then you don't have to level it up any longer if you're planning on using them for wifi, since their levels would get automatically raised to level 100

I would, but without an AR and without having caught a non chained shiny it's tough.

Unless you can tell me how to without either :D

It's not impossible with AR. Easier, yes, but not impossible. For shiny stuff, you could probably just get someone to check your SID for you.

Lol ok thanx. So that means around lvl 40 you can stop training them?
