Nuzlocke Challenge

Sorry for the double post:

Part 0: Starting the adventure
Part 1: On my way to Petalburg

'Why don't you go and help May out?' Prof. Birch asked me. Yummie, May. I always wanna help her out. 'She's on route 102, all the way north.' Pervert and I head up north. Suddenly a wild pokémon appears. It looks like a Zigzagoon, but it's black. 'It's a Poochyena' Pervert says. 'What? You can speak?' I say surprised. 'Ow, you too?' he answers with a bit of sarcasm. And with another tackle, another pokémon faints. Small sparkles emitt from Pervert. 'What's that?' I ask. 'I leveled up' he simply answers. 'When you beat enough Pokémon, I level up. My powers grow stronger and I can learn new moves. Eventually, I can even change looks.' I'm stupified. 'Well, let's head to May.'

We walk north up to route 102 where we find May. She wants to battle. She sends out a green lizard called Treecko, which gets tackled to death. Sparkles fall down from Pervert again. I follow her back to the lab where I receive a PokéDex and some balls. When I want to leave, my mom comes to me. She gives me some running shoes. 'Press B to run'... Where can I find B? Anyway, I head up to route 101 where I quickly encounter my first 'real' Pokémon. I threw one of my balls (Aww?) to the Zigzagoon and a few seconds later: Arthur the Zigzagoon joined the team! Up to route 102. (Please no zigzagoon...). A wild pokémon appeared... It's a.. Poochyena. Tackle, Ball, Nickname: Grim the Poochyena joined the team. While training Grim, he got struck by a shot in the nuts. He survived with 1hp. Lucky me. And apparently, Arthur is male...

A lot of training and sparkles later, all my team members are minimum level 5. We headed to route 103, hoping for a new addition to the team. And yes indeed: Sumbrera the Lotad (F) joined the team. After training her to level 5, and with that Grim to lvl 6, we head up for our first trainer battle. Youngster Calvin rewarded me $80.

Current team

Sumbrera the Lotad, lvl 5
Arthur the Zigzagoon, lvl 5
Grim the Poochyena, lvl 6
Pervert the Mudkip, lvl 9

Use Squirtle or Bulbasaur. Picking Charmander for FR is normally a pain in the ass, a Nuzlocke run is like 5x more painful (At least getting started). Why didn't you start attacking it with Gust?

Quick Attack is more powerful. Also I didn't start attacking because Water Pulse did a lot to my special tank (Butterfree...). I figured I had to disable that move. Sadly I found it had Swift (wtf Gamefreak...) and by that time it was too late to just pound at it with Pidgeotto. I tried attacking with other members of my team, but it Water Pulsed them into oblivion even despite accuracy mods.

My rules are simply:

Catch only the first Pokemon you meet in each area/route/cave/whatever. If you don't too bad. You can go back to route that you went through before being given Pokeballs. That is the only exception.

Nickname your Pokemon. If a Pokemon faints you must release it.

Those are the original two rules the Nuzlocke guy used. Figured I would start with them.

Okay, my FireRed run is officially dead. I was battling my rival in Cerulean, and he was using Charmander. He burned Spearow, got a critical hit on Ivysaur, and then Mankey finished him off, only to die himself later.

RIP, everybody. I might try this again, but for now, my run is over.

Ah. I just slept Starmie with Sleep Powder and then whittled it down with Squirtle. You should go with Bulbasaur and punish it >_>

Everyone seems to be having the worst of luck with FR o_o. Everything was pretty easy for me up until Koga's gym, then shit started to get a bit serious. I'm up to Berry Forest now and I've only lost 1 Pokemon. Though there are have been like 4 close calls... Also, my Pidgeot has crappy attack <_< but Featherdance is oh so lovely.

Well this is bad.

My main streaming computer has a virus (This is being sent from a friend's iPhone). As such, I will not be continuing my streaming until a further date.
Guh, that sucks. Hope you get it fixed soon.

Nuzlocke streams should be the new Nuzlocke fanfiction

My only living Pokemon is a Level 7 Poochyena. I'm about to sail to Dewford. Crap. It's...
DetroitLolcat's Emerald Nuzlocke Challenge
Part 6: Upon This Rock

"Upon this rock I will build my church". And upon this Poochyena I will build my team. Time to die, Brawley.

.
.
.
Damn you, May...DAMN YOU TO HELL! Why??? Why do you have to hax me! I built a team of Marill, Lombre, and Whismur and now THEY'RE ALL DEAD! All that's left if an untrained Poochyena! How do I beat Brawly now? I'll tell you...GRINDFEST!! Well, there's no place left to catch Pokemon, and the May battle IS optional, so Lolcat moves through Petalburg Woods to Mr. Briney's cottage.

Sailing to Dewford, Lolcat gets a call from his father. Lolcat can't tell him that he's probably going to die in Dewford due to lack of Pokemon, so he gives his number and hangs up. But unless he grinds to like level 50, how can Lolcat beat Brawley? Here's how.

A GYARADOS

That's right! Dewford town is where you get an Old Rod, to catch Magikarp by the bucketful! All Lolcat has to do is catch a Magikarp and grind it to Level 20! Lolcat sticks the Old Rod in the water, knowing that if the Magikarp dies, the Challenge is lost. And on the first try, a level 8 Magikarp's on the hook! (Level 8! Higher than Poochy!). After a few Tackles, Lolcat throws the Pokeball that will rebuild his team.

And the Magikarp was caught. It's name will be Savior, as it is the Savior of my team. And Wattson's going to kill me at this rate.

In a very "South Park World of Warcraft" fashion, Lolcat grinds Savior and Poochy against Magikarps until Savior became a Gyarados. Trust me, that took FOREVER. Twelve levels, slow experience growth, against Magikarps. Ugh. Brawley=dead, hopefully.

This is just a quick update, you'll get to meet Steven and Brawly later.

END OF PART 6

Let's do this, mothafuckas.

Hey DetroitLolcat, I'm sorry about what happened to your team. I'm just curious as to whether or not you can still fish on the route north of Dewford. A Tentacool might be able to help a little against Brawly, maybe. Supersonic + Poison-typing that resists Fighting attacks might help you. Just a thought. Either way, I hope you score a Geodude or Makuhita in Granite Cave, for electricity's sake.

Kudos on thinking of Gyarados, btw. The grinding must have been monotonous.

Heh, it's not a Gyarados yet. I just plan on making it a Gyarados. Not finished with the grinding... I can still fish on the route north of Dewford, but I might wait until I get a better Rod. And I think it's a 50% chance of Makuhita, so I pray I get one. Hariyama=awesome. But if I get a Zubat... x_x.

Taking the challenge blahblahblah you know. I was wondering in heart gold is the sprout tower considered a new area, aka if I took the onix trade in violet city for a bellsprout I caught can I catch something in sprout tower? many thanks.

Yes, Sprout Tower counts as its own area.

The problem is I didn't have a Water type Pokemon, or a Grass type. I really like Charmander and want to go with him. The solution is to grind I guess, or maybe I should have taught Butterfree Theif.

Actually, I just did a Nuzlocke on FR starting with Charmander, and your best solution would be to go North first and pick up an Oddish. Evolve it to Gloom, and it should be good enough to handle Misty with minor difficulty.

Sadly I ran into other Pokemon before Oddish so I couldn't capture one during my playthrough.

Worst comes to worst, you could head south after finishing the Bill arc. That is all that stops you from leaving Cerulean, so if 24 and 25 fail you, try using the two routes that lead to Vermilion. At worst, you'll get a Meowth, who has Bite which Starmie fears.

The last 4 games I bought I haven't finished but with my SS run coming to a close I'm thinking of looking for a FR or LG to Nuzlocke next. Pokemon is addicting.

I'd love to Nuzlocke Plat as Gen4 was one of the best pokemon games for me, I'd put it right up there with RBY. Sadly, I need to transfer some pokes before I delete it but have no way to do so.

sadly the stupid cops (FACK DA POLICE) are blocking the only exit out of cerulean, besides the cut tree. so you're going to have to rely on any poke you have currently, perhaps you can get lucky with sleep powder spam from butterfree?

Restoring Bill is the only thing needed to get past the police.

Anyway I forgot about the grass by the day care, and that the route by Vermillion had grass type Pokemon.

I can restart my run with confidence now.

Probably gonna be the second hardest fight as my only real weapon is Wrath. His fighting Pokemon can easily take down McBone, RagingMole and Fraktion, Electra won’t be able to do enough damage… Hopefully Hypnosis + Dream Eater is enough to sweep this guy.

Now, onto Kanto

Update on my Pearl Nuzlocke challenge-

I'm currently doing the Galatic Veilstone thingamabob after beating Candice with relative, Medicham to out her Snover and Sneasel with Force Palm and then Abomasnow with Hi Jump Kick. Kadabra (for an even bigger challenge) KO'd her Medicham with psychic. So, all in all, probably the easiest gym battle yet, but anyway I'd post the full movesets if I could, but my DS just ran out of charge, so it's on charge now. They're all around level 45ish

Medicham
-Force Palm
-Hi Hump Kick
-Rock Tomb
-Confusion

Torterra
-Razor Leaf
-Crunch
-Earthquake
-Curse

Kadabra (the one from the trade in Oreburgh)
-Psychic
-Shock Wave
-Grass Knot
-Recover

Bibarel
-Return
-Hyper Fang
-Surf
-Pluck

Bibarel 2 (HM slave)
-Rock Smash
-Cut
-Strength
-Rock Climb

Starly
-Fly
-Defog
-Tackle
-Growl

I'm still yet to have any of my Pokemon faint yet...

I've enjoyed doing this challenge so far, but i have too a lot of 'few day' breaks from it, as i'm getting a little bored with how long i'm taking over the challenge (25:38 is my current playtime, however in my standard playthroughs i've usually completed the North East island and am chilling at the battle tower n stuff...), and like constantly going back to the pokemon centre after every battle. I think that my pokemon will be around lv.50 after Volkner, then around lv.53ish after Victory Road. I will then do about a days worth of grinding to get them up to level 60 and take on the elite 4.

I might be strange, but does anyone else get an opposite effect from nicknaming their Pokemon? I just find myself not caring about a Pokemon that I gave an incredibly lame/forced nickname to. However, I am unable to release any of my Heartgold Pokemon because I have grown too attached to them, and those are the ones without nicknames.

Well I hate giving pokemon nicknames that I cant think of, like "Wormy the Wurmple" of something lame like that. However, I cant release ones that I give a nickname that I like, but yeah, my love goes down for a pokemon that I force a nickname on. Ive sat in front of my DS for 20 minutes thinking of a nickname that I like.

However, I am unable to release any of my Heartgold Pokemon because I have grown too attached to them, and those are the ones without nicknames.

It depends on the nickname. If I couldn't think of a good name for the Pokemon, I might kinda fake my sadness about losing a Pokemon or be more frustrated and annoyed at the loss. If I actually gave a nickname with a touch of thought put into it, however, I'll be more upset or disturbed.

Example: I couldn't think of much else to call a female Fearow, so I named her "Harpie". She died to a Machamp getting its Revenge while I was trying to level her up. I wasn't really sad about Harpie dying; I was annoyed that I lost something to Machamp's Revenge attack, because it's a friggin' painful move.
I named my Snorlax Poo because I was going to teach him PK Starstorm (Psychic) and let him loose on Agatha (I had no Psychic Pokemon on this run besides an Exeggcute I got from Berry Forest.). I was pretty crushed when the leader of the Kanto Rider Federation went WTFBOOM on Poo, delivering a blow that he apparently could not take. I had to find someone else to learn Psychic. And my Persian Duster, named for the likable thief from Mother 3... he was with me since Cerulean City. When Gary's Alakazam blew him away, I was devastated.

Of course, maybe it's not the nicknames that make me feel this way but the Pokemon's role on the team, or whether I actually like the Pokemon I'm training. All in all, it just depends on how much thought was put into the Pokemon.

Indeed. I often came up with a bit of forced nicknames for things I knew would likely turn out to be fodder like Rattatas, staring for a good while at the screen with the text input. But if it's something you like, something you cared for...It could be heartwrenching.

Of course, I did change some nicknames at the Rater if said Fodder proved itself by doing something impressive and earning a loving nickname. Like my Raticate that managed to near-solo Blue in Lavender Town. :D
