Lol wut? Zapdos sweep? (OU rmt)

Hey guys, this is WarmFridge welcoming you to my first ever rmt. This team is centered around an offensive Zapdos that uses charge beam as a boosting move. Although I do love using this team, it's only above average at best. It's got some problems that hopefully you guys can solve.

Team Building Process

Although Zapdos is usually seen as a defensive pokemon, it's got some amazing offensive capabilities, which is why I wanted to try making a team around a charge beam sweeper Zapdos.

Unfortunately for Zapdos, one of his two weaknesses happens to be to Stealth rock, which is why I think a spinner is essentiel. LO Starmie seemed to be the best poke for the job because of it's high speed. It's great coverage can make it an effective early game sweeper

Next I needed a lead that can set up entry hazards. Smeargle seemed to be a good choice because of the offensive nature of this team. It can put something to sleep, than proceed to set up SR and spikes.

Next up is my physical sweeper, Kingdra. I chose Kingdra as my physical sweeper because of it's above average defenses, it's great typing and access to dragon dance. It also makes a great status absorber.

I needed a counter to the ever popular Lucario, a Gliscor is just a perfect counter, outspeeding it and KOing it with STAB earthquake. Gliscor also has a great mid game taunt, which prevent sweepers such as Gyrados and Tyranitar from setting up.

Finally, I chose TyraniBOAH as the last member of my team because of it's amazing bulk and 404hp, which allows it to make subs Blissey can't break. It's sandstorm also helps Gliscor abuse it's sand veil, as a miss can help me stall out Swamperts and other pokes.

Tyranitar just wasn't doing much, and after seeing how much entry hazards Smeargle can set up, I realized I needed a spin blocker, and Dusknoir seemed to fit perfectly with it's great movepool, defences and respectable attack.

After a suggestion, I decided I'll try these two changes to this team. Firstly, a scarfed Rotom-H will replace Dusknoir as my spin blocker. With it's good defences, decent special and high speed thanks to choice scarf, it can trick walls ad outspeed and KO most spinners. The other change is replacing Gliscor with an Infernape as my wall breaker, it can counter snorlax with close combat and still serve as a Lucario counter with mach punch.

In depth analysis

Lead

235.png

Smeargle @Focus sash
(Own tempo) Jolly nature
252 speed/252 Def/4 hp

-Spore
-Stealth rock
-Spikes
-U turn

The spiker lead, this set focuses on setting up entry hazards by putting your opponent to sleep. Against taunt leads, I U turn out to an appropriate counter, while breaking their sash at the same time.

Spinner/LO sweeper

121.png

Starmie @LO
(Natural cure) Timid nature
252 spatk/252 speed/4 hp

-Surf
-Thunderbolt
-Ice beam
-Rapid spin

The point of this set is to rapid spin my opponent's SR away to set up a sweep by Zapdos. It also has great coverage. Surf because I hate missing, tbolt for waters and flyers and Ice beam for grasses and dragons.

Physical sweeper

230.png

Kingdra @Chesto Berry
(Swift swim) Adamant nature
252 atk/252 speed/4 hp

-Dragon dance
-Waterfall
-Outrage
-Rest

Chesto rest Kingdra has awesome sweeping capabilities. When I bring this guy in, my opponent usually switched to a status inducer, and I just continue to set up until I need to rest. From there on, I attempt a sweep. Waterfall and outrage are your basic dual stab. Dragon dance to boost attack and speed, and rest to get rid of status.

Spin Blocker
499.png

Rotom-H@ Choice Scarf
(Levitate) Modest nature
252 sp atk/ 252 speed/4 hp

-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball
-Overheat
-Trick

Rotom-H is one of the best spin blockers in OU, it can take out many of the commonly used spinners with STAB thunderbolt and shadow ball, and it can take out Scizor and Forretress with Overheat. With choice scarf, this rotom becomes and excellent revenge killer, and it can cripple a wall with trick.

Wall breaker

395.png

Infernape@ Life orb
(Blaze) Naive nature
252 atk/64 sp atk/ 192 speed

-Overheat
-Close combat
-Stone edge
-Mach punch

The standard mixape. With high speed, attack and special atk, it can take out most of the walls in OU. Overheat is used over fire blast because it's my only special attack, meaning that it will not decrease the damage output of my other moves. Close combat is for Blissey, Snorlax and steels. Stone edge is to take out those flying types. And finally, mach punch is for Weavile, DD Ttar, ScarfTran and SD Luke.

Zapdos @ Leftovers(Life orb?)
(Pressure) Timid nature
252 speed/ 252 sp atk/ 4 hp

-Charge beam
-Thunderbolt
-Heat wave
-Hp grass

This guy is a beast, and the best part about him is that no one expect this. I have sweeped many teams with this set and I think it's quite effective. However, if you guys can come up with a set where I can fit roost, it would be greatly appreciated. Charge beam is for a 54% chance to boost sp atk. Thunderbolt because it's a more powerful than charge beam. Heat wave for grass types and Hp grass for Swampert.

This concludes my first RMT. Some improvements to my team would be greatly appreciated. I want to find a way to counter Machamp leads. I'm open to all suggestions, thank you in advance for your help.

use trick rotom for spin blocking. that should help you with curse lax.

wothout a steel poke like standard choiced slicor ur team has a toxic blissey weak, run infernape or scizor over gliscor. both fit well as wallbreaker and revengers + scout (mix ape with U-turn, Close combat, Overheat, mach punch)

mach punch will revenge a weekened LO Lucario with ease.

I just want to suggest running SD Empoleon over Kingdra as your physical sweeper. Empoleon has a shitload of resists, good defences and many chances to setup SD thanks to it. After 1 or 2 SD's, Empoleon outclasses Kingdra.

Hmm, wouldn't stone edge be more than U turn useful on mixape?

Hey there,

Alright, so I really like the basic idea for this team. I love sweeping with Zapdos, because really, it can be very effective with the right support. I also really dig the use of Smeargle as a lead, you don't see that nearly enough anymore and it's really good! That said, your team has a few major holes that absolutely need to be patched or this thing will get torn up.
  • No Dragon-type resists
As you might guess, this is pretty crippling. If Dragonite gets in and sets up a single Dragon Dance, which he can do easily against Rotom-A and Zapdos, you're pretty much going to lose at least 2 Pokemon to his Outrage.
  • No switch-in to Tyranitar
Tyranitar is a massive threat to this team. You have absolutely nothing that can take a Stone Edge.
In order to adjust for these things, I have the following suggestions:
Run RestTalk Machamp over Infernape
  • Sleep absorber
Smeargle has a terrible lead match-up against Scarf Smeargle and Roserade, so having a sleep absorber that can threaten them is important.
  • Great Tyranitar switch-in
RestTalk Machamp is bulky and can switch into Tyranitar with relative safety. That's very important.
  • Still a strong Fighting-type
Machamp is strong and hard to switch into. He also breaks walls like nobody's business, which is why you had Infernape at all.
Run the following set:

Machamp @ Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SpA)
~ Rest
~ Sleep Talk
~ DynamicPunch
~ Payback

I also have a lot of minor fixes for your team that will help out a ton in the long run. Because your team really doesn't have room for a Steel-type without sacrificing a crucial member to your team's theme, you need to instead not give Dragonite or opposing Kingdra the chance to set up.
Use the standard special attacking Zapdos
Don't rely on Charge Beam to help you out, you need Roost for longevity. Zapdos is your check to a lot of things, too, so don't waste that.

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid nature (+Spe, -Atk)
~ Thunderbolt
~ Heat Wave
~ Hidden Power Ice
~ Roost

Notice I removed Hidden Power Grass. Machamp beats the crap out of Swampert, and my next change to Rotom-A will help with Pert even more.
Run Rotom-C over Rotom-H
Overheat is handy, but you really need the second check to Pert here without sacrificing Zapdos's coverage (since it needs to hit Dragonite and Flygon). Also, Timid nature to outspeed stuff like Dragonite after a Dragon Dance and Jolly Gyarados after a Dragon Dance. That's important.

Rotom-c @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid nature (+Spe, -Atk)
~ Thunderbolt
~ Shadow Ball
~ Leaf Storm
~ Trick

Lastly, I suggest that you run 144 HP / 160 Atk / 40 SpD / 164 Spe for Kingdra. This balances his bulk, while giving him just enough Speed and Attack to get the job done. Keep this with an Adamant nature.

Note that you may run into a bit of trouble with opposing ChestoRest Kingdra trying to setup against you. You only have a few things that can check it, and nothing that can take the Outrage and live. You may want to consider changing up your team a bit more extremely, such as trying a Choice Scarf Flygon over Starmie. For now, though, stick with my suggestions and you should see some improvements.

Good luck with the team!
