On Wicked Winds
At a Glance
The Process
I play Pokemon under the belief that any pokemon can function well, given the right conditions. Shiftry is my favorite pokemon, very cool, interesting origin, and general bad ass. But in competitive terms he is not completely lost; with decent bulk (90 hp is respectable, the defenses are meh but its okay) along with great typing (Resists dark, ghost, ground, elec, water, grass) nice attacking stats (100/90/80) great move pool, and above all else, a phenomenal ability. Double speed in the sun with the ability to choose attacks makes him very potent. But I needed a proper team to support him. The name of the team comes from Shiftry and Crobat, they're both pretty mean, wicked pokemon, and one is a flying type and one has a wind motif.
First was the lead. After some deep soul searching with the Boxer playing on itunes, a Sunny Day Crobat came up. To keep him interesting, and better at capitalizing on Sunny Day's effects, I went with a special varient.

Originally machamp was my choice in the third slot. he worked nicely, but unfortunately I found myself in need of an extra ice resistance. So he was switched to...

Hariyama! I've had great success with Hariyama in the past, and he works very well on here as well. He is the ultimate tyranitar and weavile check, and is all around very bulky. Very nice addition to the team.

Tangrowth is another pokemon that takes the benefits of the sun and runs with it. Leaf guard on him is wonderful as he comes in and can block all status.

Swampert functions nicely on the team and provides some key resistances and utilities. He resists rock, fire, and is immune to electric. He also is my stealth rocker and phazer. I am totally open to substituting him for something else, if anybody has any ideas.

And finally there was Arcanine. Double-STAB in the sun on flare blitz, plus 2/3 HP recovery keeps him sweeping. Also adds to the overall synergy of the team.

Special oriented Crobat may seem gimicky at first, but the moveset actually works wonders. Sunny Day to start, unless it's Azelf (in which case i'll switch out) then use the appropriate move for each lead. I'm torn between hidden power and hypnosis. Hypnosis is really useful, but innacurate. While hidden power hurts tyranitar. I guess only testing will tell.

Shiftry is a potent revenge killer in the sun. Dark Pulse and Energy Ball for stab. I chose energy ball for its consistancy, Solar Beam can be screwed over by tyranitar and abamasnow. Low Kick hits heatran and tyranitar and others. Hidden Power is for other steels and STAB in the Sun.

First sunny day back up pokemon. Sunny day on Hariyama seems really strange. But the strange helps the team. Fire punch gets a big boost in the sun. Force palm is for STAB and status. Payback is for ghosts.

Tangrowth serves as my general tank. He also is my status absober and second sunny day back up. Really bulky and hard to take down with complete status immunity and 2/3 recover in the sun. Hidden power fire stops him from being walled by skarmory, though heatran is still a problem.

Phazing mixpert. He's actually very intregal to the team. DDgyara is a big threat and he roars him away, along with other stat uppers. Stealth rock because Shiftry always likes picking off things a bit easier. Earthquake for stab and ice beam for coverage.

Morning Sun Arcanine is a beast. The Sun just adds to his power. Flare blitz hits hard, sun or no sun. Morning Sun keeps him going. Extreme speed is a much needed priority move for the team. Thunder fang is really just filler. Mainly for Gyara. I chose flash fire to compensate for shiftry and tangrowth's obvious fire weakness and other teams trying to capitalize on the sun. Life orb adds power and morning sun covers its recoil as well.
