Butterfree

[OVERVIEW]

Oh Butterfree, 5th gen was so very kind to you. With the addition of Butterfree's Dream World ability, Tinted Lens, and the new move Butterfly Dance, Butterfree finally gains its long-desired offensive potential. Unfortunately, with the addition of Black and White, Venomoth and the new Pokemon Urugamosu were given the awe-inspiring Butterfly Dance, so sweet Butterfree will probably be banished back into the NU tier.

[SET]
Name: Butterfly Dance
Move 1: Butterfly Dance
Move 2: Bug Buzz
Move 3: Shadow Ball
Move 4: Hidden Power [Ground]
Item: Life Orb
Ability: Tinted Lens
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 Defense, 252 SpAtk, 252 Speed
[SET COMMENTS]

The EV spread is pretty straight forward, devoting 252 into Speed and Special Attack, with 4 placed in Defense over HP so Butterfree can come in on SR twice. Bug Buzz is the obligatory STAB move of the set, Shadow Ball is for the persky Ghosts that 4x resist Bug Buzz(Gengar, Drifloon), and to just hit Ghost Pokemon harder. Hidden Power Ground was added to take care of Heatran, Infernape, etc.

[ADDITIONAL OPTIONS]

First, Leftovers can be used over Life Orb if one is afraid of Butterfree being robbed of half of its health, but the lack of power will be rather disappointing. Shadow Ball can be replaced with Energy Ball depending on what you're more focused on covering. You can switch Shadow Ball of Hidden Power Ground to Giga Drain, but it would require switching from Tinted Lens to Compoundeyes, so it's generally better to stick with Shadow Ball/Energy Ball. The Hidden Power can be switched to Ice if one fears Dragonite or Salamence.

[SET]
Name: Choice
Move 1: Bug Buzz
Move 2: Shadow Ball
Move 3: Energy Ball
Move 4: Hidden Power [Ice]
Item: Choice Scarf/Choice Specs
Ability: Tinted Lens
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 Defense, 252 SpAtk, 252 Speed
[SET COMMENTS]

This set plays a slightly different role, attempting to be more of an immediate threat, or even potential revenge killer with Choice Scarf. Again, the EV spread is pretty straightforward, and the moves were chosen gearing for good type coverage. Hidden Power Ice was selected in this set to take out a pesky MixMence or Randorosu not at +1 Speed itself.

[ADDITIONAL OPTIONS]

Hidden Power Ice should be switched to Hidden Power Ground if one chooses to go the route of Choice Specs, as outspeeding Salamence and other Pokemon worth hitting with Hidden Power Ice becomes a joke. It is viable to go a route with Compoundeyes, Giga Drain over Energy Ball, and Sleep Powder over Shadow Ball or Hidden Power Ice on a Choice Scarf set.

[SET]
Name: Status Inducer
Move 1: Sleep Powder
Move 2: Stun Spore
Move 3: Bug Buzz
Move 4: U-turn
Item: Focus Sash/Lum Berry
Ability: Compoundeyes
Nature: Timid
EVs: 4 Defense, 252 SpAtk, 252 Speed
[SET COMMENTS]

With Compoundeyes, Sleep Powder and Stun Spore become moves with an amazing 98% accuracy. Unfortunately, while everything and its brother got Magic Coat in 5th generation, Butterfree apparently overslept and missed the giveaway. Bug Buzz is to put a relative amount of damage on most leads, and U-turn is just to clear out once the job is done. Lead Butterfree should be paired with a reliable Stealth Rock user, such as Swampert or Heatran.

[ADDITIONAL OPTIONS]

Using a Scarf on this set is somewhat viable, but Focus Sash and Lum Berry are going to be your best bets at doing anything.

---
[OPTIONAL CHANGES]

Hidden Power Fighting can be put on the offensive sets, but generally isn't worth the time of day. Hidden Power Electric is somewhat of a viable option if one is overly paranoid of Gyarados.

[TEAM OPTIONS]

Please, for the love of all that is good, if you're going to use Butterfree get something to take care of Chansey and Snorlax, otherwise you're just wasting your time. Lucario and Roobushin are always solid candidates for the job, and are good at taking advantage of a weakened team is Butterfree's attempt at a sweep is, unsurprisingly, cut short. Wobbuffet(although you're kidding yourself if you think it's not going to be banished to Ubers) is a good Pokemon to help set-up a set-up for Butterfree. As for lead Butterfree, solid users of Stealth Rock are extremely welcome. A Rapid Spinner is almost manditory for the offensive sets.

[COUNTERS]

Oh, where to start? Chansey and Snorlax are two blaring ones, as they laugh in Butterfree's face if it tries to attack them under +6, as they'll both cripple or KO it otherwise. Any Butterfree lacking HP Ground is stopped dead by Heatran, and any lacking HP Ice is stopped by Dragonite or Salamence.

[DREAM WORLD]

Butterfree(thankfully), got Tinted Lens as a currently legal Dream World ability.
