ChainChomp?

A few days ago my friend and I were talking about what it would be like if Garchomp was able to learn Dragon Dance. We both came to the conclusion that it would be pretty wicked.
Not long after that I found myself wanting to make a team based around Garchomp. One that would make people cower in fear.

Team at a Glance:

In-Depth:

Hippowdon (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Slack Off
- Yawn
- Earthquake

Standard Lead-Hippo. Gets the Rocks up most of the time, and can take physical hits like they were nothing. Since he is slower than the other Weather-inducing Pokemon I'll always manage to have Sand going as soon as the battle starts. I'm not real sure whether to keep Yawn or switch it out for Toxic or Roar. It seems to do a good job if I predict a switch, but I dunno.

437l.png

Bronzong @ Light Clay
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 84 Atk / 100 Def / 72 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Gyro Ball
- Toxic

You want Screens? Bronzong has Screens. This is normally the second Pokemon I bring out.(If the matchup is favorable, at least) Toxic is for wearing down the opponents(Maybe I don't need to switch Yawn for Toxic on Hippowdon then) And I use 0 IV in Speed to give Gyro Ball somre more power. The first turn that Bronzong is out I'll use the appropriate Screen first, then the other, then switch out for...

368i.png

Gorebyss (F) @ White Herb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 HP / 24 SDef / 232 Spd
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Shell Smash
- Baton Pass
- Ice Beam
- Surf

This gal. Now, if you couldn't tell in the team preview I'm sure you know what my strategy is now. Gotta Pass the Smash to Chomp. Gorebyss is fairly bulky, depending on what move hits her. But with Reflect and Light Screen up she doesn't take much damage at all. The whole idea is to Shell Smash and then Baton Pass it immediately to Garchomp. Electric types normally get thrown out when they see Gorebyss, and then quickly get called back in once she Passes to Chomp. She also works well against Rain, as she gets the Speed boost from Swift Swim, as well as resisting most of Politoed's attacks. Also, White Herb so Garchomp doesn't get the Defense drops.

248c.png

Tyranitar (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Ice Punch

Good ol' Tyranitar. I use him so I can make sure to have Sand going to make Garchomp a little bit harder to kill, plus Garchomp and Tyranitar are pretty much BFFs. Dragon Dance has been working pretty well for me, or I can just Pass the stat boosts to him and cause some damage instantly. Crunch and Stone Edge for nice STAB, though Stone Edge is a little unreliable at times. Ice Punch works good against enemy Garchomp and Gliscor, though I'm debating on changing it. Not sure what to change it to though.

445.png

Garchomp (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Veil
EVs: 188 HP / 68 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Fire Fang

Basically...This guy causes so many ragequits on PO. If he ends up receiving the Pass it's basically over for my opponent. If I feel that the enemy can't do enough damage to Chomp, or if they are going to switch out I'll use Substitute first. If the opposing team is pretty low on health then it's sweeping time. The EVs give Garchomp the 101HP Subs, as well as 688 Attack and 606 Speed after the boost. I did have a different EV spread earlier, but Garchomp's normal Speed stat was only reaching 270 without the boost. Seemed way too low for him. I like this spread a lot better though.

Now...I really don't know what to use in the last slot. I've tested around 10 different Pokemon so far.
The ones that have worked the best are: Heracross, Hydreigon, Krookodile, and Nidoking.

Krookodile was fairly good. If he received a Baton Pass and KO'd an enemy, his Attack would go up even more thanks to Moxie.

Heracross could take hits fairly well, and with a Guts boost he would reach 1047 Attack if he received the Pass. That's enough to OHKO a Skarmory with Close Combat.

Nidoking's vast movepool made it work very well. And it gave me a Special Attacker to use. With Life Orb, Sheer Force, and a +2 Sp. Att. boost from Gorebyss...yeah. Don't think anything ended up surviving the first hit.

Hydreigon's mixed set worked very well when I tested it. Had 600+ in each offensive stat after receiving a Pass. Plus it added a second Dragon type, which is very helpful.

I really don't know what to use for my last Pokemon. These 4 have worked nicely, but I feel that there's something I'm missing that could be even better.

Threats that I've noticed so far include: Rain, Sun, and Hail teams just for the fact that they screw up my weather, Conkeldurr can be a pain at times, as well as Gliscor. Especially Taunt variants. Or Taunt users in general, really.

I'm rating it right now, and welcome to Smogon! If you've seen my rates, I like to make 'em long and helpful, like a burrito! (well, not as greasy).

I'll delete this post after I submit my rate, so hold on tight! :D

I rarely look towards Yawn for team support, but it often works well. I would actually run Ice Fang since your team really doesn't like Erufuun (Whimsicott), Landlos, and Voltolos. Roar is great as well if you're more concerned with set-up sweepers and Spikers, but the 'mons listed above will always force you out.

I miss Bronzong so much. Honestly, I do. I used him in 4th Gen, but I've gon to the darkside of the desert (Hyper-Offensive Sand). He is, of course, one of Dor...Excadrills hardest counters. Your set is nice, but be careful with matchups against the foe because of the lack of Lefties.

Gorebyss (F) @ White Herb

Nice strategy you've got here. (To be honest, I like no DD on Garchomp. I like him in OU. :D). To be honest, I might have to check with others on Gorrebys, as the only time I've had any experience with it was on the now-banned Drizzle+Swift Swim teams. The type synergy is pretty good with the rest of your team, but Bronzong is the only thing that can take Grass attacks for hit.

Tyranitar (M) @ Leftovers

Fire Punch man. Best coverage type in conjunction with Stone Edge. You'll be able to hit Scizor, Ferrothorn, Forretress, Excadrill, and Skarmory for HUGE damage. Another great combination is Earthquake / Crunch / Thunderpunch. While losing SE hits on Ferrothorn, Scizor, and Forretress (although all take hefty damage from EQ), you're able to take down bulky waters like Vaporeon and Burungeru with ease. Fire Punch and Stone Edge is your best option though, since Garchomp hates 'dem dang Steel types. lol

With all of that crazy power from Shell Smash, Jolly is ALOT better for being that much more of an offensive threat. With Jolly and those EVs, you're even able to outspeed Excadrill after the boost (Excadill reaching a max 604, while you're awesome ChainChomp here reaches 666, you horrible sinner. XD )

After reading your RMT and possible options, let's see what would be YOU'RE lucky 6th teammate!

Let's see. Gliscor and Conkelderr provide threats to your team. Wait! Your team has a big problem with Grass, while You also have no means of Special offense outside of your Baton Passer, which could be a big problem when considering Skarmory and Ferrothorn. Aha!

@ Choice Specs
Timid - 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
~Trick
~Shadow Ball
~Focus Blast
~Hidden Power Fire / Thunderbolt

An amazing team mate for Tyranitar, a Grass resistance AND grass type counter for T-Tar, Hippowdon, and Gorebyys, with the power to manhandle Conkelderr, Steels, and Gliscor. With Choice Specs and Gengars wonderfull Speed, he has the power to wreck teams. Trick is the selling point that cripples the three threats above, while it tends to be able to cripple anything that isn't a Special Sweeper or Special Tank (ie Rankurusu or CroCune). Shadow Ball and Focus Blast is a great duo that has near perfect type coverage over the entire metagame. Shadow Ball is your best move that abuses Gliscor and Roobushins lesser Special Defenses. Hidden Power Fire is the Cherry on top that allows your team to plow through those pesky Steel types, horrid Grass types, and annoying yet scary Ice types. Thunderbolt can be a smart filler in the last slot to catch unsuspecting bulky waters, but I highly recommend that HP Fire be used instead because of its better coverage and convenience to your team.

Well, I hope that I've helped you and your team to the best of my ability! Questions? Comments? Concerns? Thanks for posting the RMT for me to rate. :D

I suggest giving Garchomp the White Herb, not Gorebyss. Then, you can Baton Pass more smashes without a net defense drop.

@Zebstrika- By that do you mean be able to get two Smashes off and then pass it to Chomp? While that would be awesome, Gorebyss can't really handle being in play for too long at a time. Especially if her Defenses get dropped. And I like having a bit of recovery on Chomp, in case some unforseen circumstance(read as Crits) takes out my Gorebyss.

@ToastTyrant13- Thanks for the rate! I didn't really make myself clear on Garchomp's Speed, but with the EVs and Nature that I use he hits 303/606 Speed. That's a nice slap to Excadrill's face.
I really like Ice Fang on Hippowdon. Basically solved my problem of getting Taunted by a Flying-type Pokemon and thinking, "Shit. What now?" And Gliscor haaates it.
I also replaced Ice Punch with Fire Punch for Tyranitar. At first I was worried that Gliscor would give me trouble, but having Hippowdon with Ice Fang and the ability to hit Scizor and others for Super Effective definitely makes up for it.
Now for your final team member suggestion...I love Gengar. One of my favorite Pokemon. And he works well. I've never really used any TrickChoice Pokemon before, so I'm still getting used to that. But the damage output on him is awesome. Sometimes I don't even need to Pass the Smash to anyone, he can wrecks teams by himself. So thank you for the suggestions!

Overall the team is doing even better now...as long as I play smart.(Duh)
Though if anybody has any other suggestions, such as someone who could possibly "Pass the Smash" better, or someone better suited for setting up Screens, etc, please let me know.
