Hail Team

OU Hail Team:
Before I start I would like everyone to know that although I know my stuff, I do make mistakes so please be patient if I seem to misunderstand as I still have lot’s to learn. Also this is my first RMT post and I’m very new to the forums.
Like most teams this team began with my favourite Pokemon, Mamoswine. I have tested many Hail teams but with the new gen I wanted to really take it seriously. Also I am considering entering one of the UK VGC’s this summer. I would also like to point out that I am aware that hail teams have also lost out in the new gen but I enjoy playing with them, unless you really advise scrapping a hail team.

Gliscor @Leftovers
Jolly Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe

-Earthquake
-Taunt
-U-Turn
-Stealth Rock
Now I’m not sure what gen 5 will change in terms of Leads but Gliscor is a speedy Poke that can get out some quick Stealth Rock, assuming Azelf/Aerodactyl's are still popular I have U-Turn to chip at their Focus Sashes while they most likely Taunt.
Gliscor also provides cover for my team, if anything he has a lot to do which can cause problems if I’m careless and let him die. He provides a check for Fighting, Electric and Ground which of course all do damage to my Hail team, especially fighting Pokemon. A weakness to Ice attracts in switches, which then allows me to switch in one of my Ice Pokemon.

Abomasnow @Leftovers
Timid Nature
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

-Substitute
-Protect
-Blizzard
-Leech Seed
[Decided to go with a ‘Sub Seed’ set as my Abomasnow has no way of providing some free HP, so I went for Leech Seed instead of Wood Hammer. Fairly simple set, my objective is to set up Hail, Protect for scouting and then set up Substitute and Leech Seed. The main goal is to survive, will most likely need to set up Hail again later on so it’s essential to survive. Further to that weather has become very popular in the new gen, I just hope I can keep up a strong hail storm.

Tentacruel @Black Sludge
Calm Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 SpD

-Toxic Spikes
-Rapid Spin
-Toxic
-Surf

[This Pokemon is essential in many ways, firstly I will be setting up Toxic Spikes. Secondly he provides cover for fire types, such as Infernape. Providing they don’t carry a scary Ground type move. I feel absorbing other Toxic Spikes is very helpful, I do seem to struggle with Starmie’s, as they have a very varied movepool. Rapid Spin for Spikes/Stealth Rock. ]

365.png

Walrein @Leftovers
Bold Nature
EVs: 220 HP / 240 Def / 48 Spe

-Protect
-Substitute
-Roar
-Surf

[This is the typical Stalrein set, not much to say about this set. Set up Substitute and gain some free XP from Protect and Ice Body. Stall as much as possible, I should mention that if I don’t get out my Toxic Spikes or Hail my Walrein is completely open for attack. I am considering changing Roar for Toxic, just in case I can’t set up.]

34.png

Nidoking @ Life Orb
Ability: DW: Sheer Force
Timid / Modest Nature
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

-Earth Power
-Thunderbolt
-Ice Beam
-Flamethrower
[Like the other sets I found this on smogon, while still being kinda new to competitive Pokemon I’m going to stick to the tried and tested sets. I found this on the Gen 5 Nidoking quality control thread thing. I must admit Nidoking might be out of place but I do really want to use him ahaaa. I was thinking as a late game sweeper and a check for those Fighting types that hit me hard. I would love some thoughts on this set in particular, I have a feeling you’re going to tell me to drop him but I’m hoping I can find a way of using him. Maybe a switch to his more defensive, female counter part? ]

473.png

Mamoswine @Life Orb
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

-Earthquake
-Ice Shard
-Stone Edge
-Protect

[Protect allows me to scout as Mamoswine seems to be the ‘Go to’ Pokemon for finishing off any low HP Pokemon. This is most likely because of Ice Shard, which is so useful. I love this attack. Mamoswine also packs a punch and does some serious damage with his Life Orb. Looking to take advantage of Snow Cloack. Also considering another option instead of Stone Edge? ]

Known Issues:

• No Spin blocker.
• Still have big weaknesses to Rock, Fighting

Other options:

442.png

Spiritomb @Leftovers
Calm Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Def / 116 SpD

-Dark Pulse
-Will-o-wisp
-Rest
-Sleep Talk

[Have used this set with some positive feedback, although I just feel that Spiritomb is just to frail, unless I’m not protecting him right. He acts as a Spin Blocker, which is useful and I do feel like I need a Blocker in this latest Meta game.]

476.png

Glaceon @ Leftovers
Ability: Ice Body
Calm Nature
Evs: 252 HP, 252 SpD , 4 SpA
-Blizzard
-Toxic
-Substitute
-Protect

[Now, although not the best of Poke’s, I’m considering Glaceon for two reasons. One, to take advantage of his new DW ability Ice Body, and two I’m getting him in the DW soon from the event. I was thinking about maybe a support set for my team or go for an evasive, attacking set?]

646.png

Kyurem @Life Orb
Timid Nature
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

-Draco Meteor
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power Fire / Dragon Pulse

[I don’t know too much about this guy yet but I thought he deserved a mention, he can provide some nice power to my team.]

Other Pokemon to consider:

• Regice – Massive wall, could be a great stall? Also new Ice Body ability is very tempting.
• Frolass – Spin Blocker and packs a punch.

Can’t really think of anymore, that’s where I need your help though.

Threat List:

Azelf -
Bisharp -
Breloom -
Cobalion -
Conkeldurr -
Darmanitan -
Eelektross -
Electivire –
Escavalier -
Excadrill -
Genesect -
Gyarados -
Haxorus -
Heatran -
Heracross -
Hydreigon -
Keldeo -
Kingdra -
Krookodile -
Landorus -
Lucario -
Machamp -
Magnezone -
Meloetta-
Metagross -

Reuniclus -
Scizor -
Scrafty-
Sigilyph -
Starmie -
Terakion -
Thundurus -
Tyranitar -
Venusaur -
Victini -
Virizion -

This list is quite big actually, with the new amount of Fighting types, it makes it difficult to pull off a Hail team. Do you think it would be possible to attempt an attacking Hail team? Rather than a stall team? There are many things for me to consider and I hope you guys will help me out as I’ve put quite a bit of effort into this so would really appreciate some constructive feedback. Thanks, Sorry if I missed anything off.

1.poison heal toxic orb for gliscor instead of leftovers
2.toxic for walrein you should count on the otherr team carrying a rapid spin

Why would it be illegal to have Stealth Rock and Poison Heal?

Okay Toxic for Roar. Anything else? would like someone to analyse my team please?

Stealth Rock is a Gen 4 TM, Poison Heal is a Gen 5 DW ability.

Also, consider swapping u-turn for protect on gliscor as hail breaks sashes anyway.

So this means it is illegal to have Both Stealth Rock and Poison Heal at the same time?

Gliscor Protect, okay. Any other feedback would be great?

First, why has nothing got blizzard? The biggest reason to have hail is to have blizzard with 100% accuracy.
Also toxic on tentacruel is pointless, especially as it has toxic spike, replace it with blizzard.
Mamoswine could have superpower instead of protect, this would deal with any tyranitars that threaten with SS.
I personally don't mind nidoking, he's got a very fine movepool. Although for more power a speed you could always run hydreigon. Or else calm mind reuniculus could be good as magic guard then makes hail and life orb redundant it would also make you a lot less vulnerable to every drizzle users favourite poke. Toxicroak -.-.
Apart from that it's good, hail teams are difficult in the current meta though as with other weathers round every corner.

Thank you for your reply, you are completley right with Blizzard. It makes no sense to not abuse it's power in a hail team. I feel a little stupid for not noticing it.

Toxic was infact a typo, it is actually Knock Off but Blizzard is a better option.

I was considering Superpower so will test that out, especially as i heavily rely on Gliscor to counter Tyranitar.

It's funny you mention Reuniculus as i was just looking at his sets. Will investigate further. Thank you.
