[Overview]

With the four new Ghosts introduced in Generation V, Golett stands out as the only one attacking from the physical side. It sports a decent 74 base Attack and acceptable 59/50/50 defenses with a unique Ground/Ghost typing, giving it three immunities. Sadly, this slow golem faces stiff competition from its fellow Ghost-types for a team slot due to its many common weaknesses and low speed, often causing it to be overlooked. However, with the satisfying coverage its movepool gives it and STAB Earthquake that 2HKOs most things that do not resist it, this little golem should be underestimated at your own peril.

[SET]
name: Rock Polish
move 1: Rock Polish
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Brick Break
move 4: Rock Slide / Ice Beam
item: Life Orb
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Jolly
evs: 244 Atk / 236 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Despite its low base Speed, Golett reaches 28 Speed after Rock Polish, making it capable of outspeeding every unboosted sweeper under normal conditions. Earthquake is Golett's most powerful STAB move and deals heavy damage to anything that does not resist it. Brick Break gives the golem additional coverage and allows Golett to shatter the opponent's Dual Screens. Rock Slide prevents Bug-types and Flying-types from walling it while hitting them for super effective damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Iron Fist is Golett's most useful ability to maximize Brick Break's power in conjunction with Life Orb. A Jolly nature should always be used to maximize Speed. With Gligar banned from Little Cup, Ice Beam isn't nearly as useful as it was before, but it can be used to hit Dragon-types and Grass-types harder. Houndour, Joltik, and Scraggy all take out at least two of the types that Golett fears. Teammates that are weak to Fighting or Electric can also give Golett room to switch in and set up.

There are very few opponents who can safely switch into even a neutral STAB Earthquake, but Ferroseed can easily take two hits and strike back with Bullet Seed. Bronzor can also switch into Earthquake and threaten Golett with Hidden Power Ice. Both of them can even take a Brick Break, so it is best to remove these threats before Golett switches in.

[SET]
name: Trick Room Sweeper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Brick Break
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Ice Beam
item: Life Orb
ability: Iron Fist
nature: Brave
evs: 124 HP / 244 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD
ivs: 0 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Though less reliable than the Rock Polish set, Golett is also capable of fighting on a Trick Room team. Once again, Earthquake is its only STAB move that can 2HKO most foes neutral to it with the exception of Ferroseed. Brick Break prevents Dual Screens from ruining Golett's fun against non-Ghosts and is its only attack powered up by Iron Fist. Ice Beam is used in the last slot for extra coverage on Grass-types, Dragon-types, and opposing Ground-types.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

It should be noted that under Trick Room, Golett is outsped by Slowpoke, Solosis, Ferroseed, and Bronzor, who can all dispose of Golett with a super effective move. Golett's teammates should be able to switch into these attacks, so Munchlax can work as an excellent partner to wall special attacks under Trick Room. Timburr can also take Dark-type attacks aimed at Golett, but also has trouble with Ghost-types. Ironically, the same enemies that are the bane of Golett's existence under Trick Room can function as effective partners, specifically Ferroseed, Slowpoke, and Bronzor, who each resist at least two types that are super effective against Golett. In addition, Bronzor and Slowpoke can set up Trick Room for the robot. Slowpoke can switch in multiple times with its ability Regenerator, whilst Bronzor can assist Golett's sweep by laying down Stealth Rock.

[Other Options]

Golett doesn't have many other options aside from Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, Hidden Power, Low Sweep, Gyro Ball, and Return, half of which are special moves. Brick Break is superior to Low Sweep and Focus Blast while Hidden Power is mostly useless due to Golett's ability to learn Ice Beam. Hidden Power Fire is an option to hit Ferroseed and Bronzor, but Golett usually loses to both regardless. Gyro Ball and Return are both high damaging moves, but using them causes it to lose coverage. A Choice set could be considered, but due to its many common weaknesses, the automaton does not appreciate being locked into one move and can be easily revenge killed or Pursuited while switching out.

[Checks and Counters]

Even with all the power Golett has with Rock Polish or under Trick Room, there are many ways to counter it. Even though robots are not supposed to have emotions, this one cowers in fear of priority users. Zorua, Pawniard, and Stunky can all hit Golett hard with Sucker Punch while Snover and Carvanha can dispose of it with Ice Shard or Aqua Jet. Scraggy can also take a super effective Brick Break and retaliate with Crunch or Ice Punch. Ferroseed and Bronzor, again, wall Golett and mutilate it with Bullet Seed or Hidden Power Ice.

[Dream World]

Golett receives No Guard from the Dream World, but is currently not released. Normally, this would be very useful for it, but Golett does not have access to Dynamicpunch in Little Cup, thus making it useless. Iron Fist should always be used.
