Cobalion (Analysis)

Snunch said:
 • Replace all mentions of Hidden Power Dark with Hidden Power Ghost. They're functionally almost exactly the same, but Hidden Power Ghost hits Heracross for neutral damage and is therefore superior.

HP Dark doesn't force you to lower your IVs and a resisted Focus Blast does more damage to Heracross. (120 *1.5 / 2 = 90 BP>70 BP). I personally think it should stay but its up to you really.

Add Substitute to the Calm Mind set. Being able to attack from behind a Sub negates its fear of faster checks like Dugtrio or Scarf Heracross. Also, with Focus Blast as your main attack, you're going to need a larger margin for error lest he fall prey to slower checks on account of a miss.

@ Fireburn: Single-IV increments do not matter unless they alter Speed. And Hidden Power Ghost does not miss. You should never try for a Focus Blast against Heracross unless under the safety of a Sub, or your balls are feeling especially large that day.

As to "why Taunt" on the two stat up sets, it should be mentioned that a lot of Psychic Pokemon like to try and set up SR/Screens on Cobalion. Taunt can stop this, or should screens go up (while Cobalion tried setting up itself), Taunt can stop any attempted set up for baton pass behind said screens.

Also, Substitute should be moved from OO to the AC of the Swords Dance, and should be given a slash on the main set in CM (as per SJ's recommendation). Sub + the Sp.D boost is pretty fantastic. Sub should be after Taunt and before Flash Cannon.

edit: I'd also say Hidden Power Ghost > Hidden Power Dark on Calm Mind. The only difference between the two is resisted by fighting v. immune'd by normal. Obviously, any Normal-type would get destroyed by Focus Blast. On the other hand, Heracross (one of the few Pokemon that resists Dark/Fighting) is a growing threat in UU, and being able to hit a weakened Heracross with HP Ghost is more useful than the minor damage you can do to Normal-type switch-ins (when will a normal-type switch into Cobalion?) with HP Dark.

Well, it's pretty inconsequential either way (it's pretty much the same move, generally). Generally for Cobalion and others, I'd say Dark > Ghost on choice sets (don't want to lock yourself into something the opponent can be immune to), but Ghost > Dark on non-choice sets. Ghost on non-choice set is even better if you have STAB fighting.

Looks solid to me... edit: wtf, Snunch stole my color!! >3>

QC Approved (2/3)

You got 2 checks now, so please update the title :P

although I'm no genius when it comes to this stuff,

isn't there supposed to be some sort of limitation when working with legendary pokemon? like, aren't they supposed to have some sort of issue with nature and IVs?

see Zapdos' 4th gen analysis for what I mean.

EDIT:

Timid HP Fighting is 31 HP, all others 30
Timid HP Ice is 22 atk and 30 def, all others 31
Timid HP Ghost is 11 atk, 30 def and SpD, all others 31

EDIT: ok, nevermind then

There's no IV restriction for wild Pokemon this gen. The mechanics that determine them are completely seperate unlike last gen.

I think 180 HP / 136 Atk / 192 Spe is a much better bulky spread for the Swords Dancer since you survive Scarf Cross and Gallade Close Combat. You also now survive CB Close Combat from Jolly Staraptor. You also survive LO Aura Sphere from Mew.

HP Ice deserves a slash on the Swords Dance set so it isnt walled by the like of Gligar. It also outspeeds things like Flygon on the switchin, not to mention Staraptor, as it's not affected by Intimidate. 90 Special Attack is nothing to laugh at if you're being hit SE or double SE

Fix the size of the text in the OP to 12 pt. font please, and then I'll take a look at it. It kind of hurts my eyes atm, we aren't blind lol.

According to my computer and when I edited the OP, most of it was in size 2, but I've fixed it. Whatever you do, don't click the size button and I'd recommend not writing this in Word or Notepad.

Anyway,

QC 3/3

Also, don't use the accent on the e in Pokemon.

Ok, I guess? Not that anything has changed since I last saw it. But finally I got a third QC stamp. :)

Just wondering, why should I not spell Pokémon like it's supposed? I'm not protesting or anything, I just want to know.

[Overview]

Cobalion's Steel(space)/(space)Fighting typing makes it unique among its Fighting-type brethren in the UU tier. Sporting 10 resistances, 4x resistance against Stealth Rock,(comma) and immunity to Toxic Spikes makes it easy for Cobalion to enter the field and do what it's supposed to do. It has 90 base Attack and Special Attack to utilize and has moves to boost both of them. Cobalion also has a high base 108 Speed,(comma) making it one of the fastest Pokemon in the tier,(comma) and a superb 129 base Defense meaning it can take physical hits with ease. Though Cobalion has positive sides to it, it also has downsides. It has a shallow movepool,(comma) and being a Steel-type makes it weak to the common Fighting-, Ground-, and Fire-type moves in the tier. But don't let that stop you from using Cobalion.(Usually after a sentence like that, there's a concise statement that summarizes the positives about using the pokemon)

[SET COMMENTS]

This set's purpose is quite obvious. Come in on one of the many resistances Cobalion has and start setting up. If you can, come in on a Dark-type move as it gives you an +1 extra boost to your Attack stat thanks to your its ability,(comma) Justified, though this is not necessary. Close Combat is used as your main attacking move. Stone Edge is a very good compliment to Close Combat to hit those pesky bulky fliers you may run into, Zapdos and Altaria hard. It also hits Victini,(comma) who resists Cobalion's STAB move, really hard.(period) as it also resists your STAB move. The last move is up to your own preference. Taunt stops Chansey and Slowbro from healing up and Dusclops from burning you with Will-O-Wisp. It also stops other taunters who you should outspeed,(comma) and it stops other Pokemon from setting up as well. X-Scissor is there to take care of Psychics, especially Slowbro. A Bold 252(space)/(space)252 Slowbro is only 3HKOed by Stone Edge with one Swords Dance under the its belt. It helps to quickly dispose of him if you're afraid of getting burned by his Scald.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you want, you can option opt to use Sacred Sword over Close Combat;(semicolon) if you don't want to it doesn't lower your defenses,(comma) and it also ignores any stat boosts your opponent may have under their belt. It works well against Cursers like such as Snorlax and Quagsire. Iron Head is a good supliment complement to Close Combat and Stone Edge. It gives you a secondary STAB move and takes care of Nidoqueen, Nidoking,(comma) and Golurk,(comma) who resists Close Combat and Stone Edge. Hidden Power Ice destroys Gligar,(comma) who completly walls you otherwise. Use a Naive nature if you option for that. Substitute can give some extra protection while setting up. If you want, you could option to use an Adamant nature to give Cobalion some extra power. If you use an +Atk nature with Hidden Power Ice, go with a Naughty nature. For a little more bulk, an EV spread of:(no colon) 64 HP / 252 Atk / 192 Spe works. With a Jolly nature,(comma) you still outspeeds positive base 100 Pokemon like Victini and Mew and with an Adamant nature,(comma) you still outspeed neutral base speed 100 Pokemon. The choice of item is pretty obvious. Leftovers helps Cobalion to stay in longer while Life Orb helps Cobalion score some extra KOes due to the power boost. You can also option to use Air Balloon to be immune to Ground-type moves,(comma) but the listed items are generally better.

There are several things that can make Cobalion's time on the field a little easier. Screen support, especially Light Screen, can help Cobalion,(comma) as its Special Defense isn't that good. Uxie and Cresselia are very good at setting up screens,(comma) and they both compliment Cobalion greatly,(comma) as they resist both Fighting- and Ground-type moves that Cobalion is weak to. Entry Hazards can help score some KOes. Froslass, Roserade,(comma) and Deoxys-D are good spikers;(semicolon) and Roserade can also set up Toxic Spikes,(comma) while Deoxys-D can set up Stealth Rock. All three resists those super effective Fighting-type moves directed at Cobalion. Uxie can also set up Stealth Rock besides screens. One big threat to Cobalion is Victini and its V-create. Flash Fire Pokemon like such as Arcanine and Houndoom can help taking take that hit. Fliers Flying-types such as like Zapdos and Altaria are good teammates to Cobalion,(comma) as they can take super effective Fighting- and Ground-type moves directed at Cobalion.

move 4: Taunt / Substitute / Flash Cannon
item: Leftovers / Life Orb
ability: Justified
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
ivs: 30 Atk / 30 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

This set plays similarly to the above set,(comma) but focuses on Special Sweeping instead. Calm Mind is paticulary good,(comma) as it boosts Cobalion's low Special Defense at the same time. However, Focus Blast is, sadly, the only special Fighting move Cobalion has at its disposal,(comma) and its shaky accuracy can be troublesome. The choice of Hidden Power is depending depends on what you want to hit hard. Hidden Power Ice destroys Pokemon like Gligar, Nidoqueen, Nidoking,(comma) and other Ground- and Flying-types who resists your STAB move. Hidden Power Ghost, however, takes care of your other worst enemy, Slowbro, disposing of him quickly while also hitting Victini and Ghosts hard. Your last slot depends on what you want. need for your team. Taunt stops other taunters from taunting you, as you are faster than them,(comma) while also stopping other Pokemon from setting up. Taunt also stops Chansey and Slowbro from healing,(comma) and prevents status being inflicted. Substitute works well with Focus Blast,(comma) as it gives extra protection if you should you miss with it. It also protects you from status like Taunt. Flash Canon is there for a secondary STAB move. It also hit several Pokemon harder than Hidden Power Ghost, if you would option for that, like such as Nidoqueen and Nidoking.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

You can option to use Hidden Power Fighting over Focus Blast for more PP and accuracy,(comma) but you lose both power and coverage if you do. If you want, like similarly to the above set, you can option to use a Modest nature for more power. The EV spread can be altered the same way as for the above set to give Cobalion some bulk with these EVs: a spread of 64 HP / 252 SpA / 192 Spe. You still outspeed positive 100 base Speed Pokemon like Victini and Mew with a Timid Nature,(comma) and neutral base 100 Speed Pokemon with Modest.

The IVs listed above are for Hidden Power Ice. If you use Hidden Power Ghost, go with 30 Def / 30 SpD IVs. The choice of item is the same as for the above set. Leftovers is to keep Cobalion alive as long as possible,(comma) and works great with Substitute,(comma) while Life Orb gives you more power,(comma) which can be nice with Calm Mind's lower boost. Air Ballon can be used here as well to avoid being hit by super effective Ground-type moves often directed at Cobalion.

(no space)Unlike the above set,(comma) screen support isn't as necessary this time,(comma) as Cobalion is already boosting its low Special Defense, but it can help when Cobalion is about to begin setting set up. Uxie and Cresselia are again the prime screeners,(comma) as they resist both Fighting- and Ground-type moves that Cobalion is weak to. Entry hazards helps even more now when the boost isn't as high. Froslass, Roserade,(comma) and Deoxys-D, again, can set up hazards,(comma) and they which work very well with Cobalion,(comma) as they resist Fighting-type moves. Roserade can also set up Toxic Spikes,(comma) and while Deoxys can set up Stealth Rock. Uxie can set up Stealth Rock besides screens. Flash Fire Pokemon like such as Houndoom and Arcanine helps take Victini's V-create,(comma) and while fliers like such as Zapdos and Altaria can take those super effective Fighting-and Ground-type moves directed at Cobalion.

[Other Options]

It Cobalion has access to Quick Attack to finish of weaker opponents,(comma) and Double Kick to break through Substitutes. Other physical moves at its disposal includes Retaliate, Return, Aerial Ace,(comma) and Poison Jab. Aerial Ace hits Heracross really hard, but the listed moves are much better. In the support section, department, Cobalion has access to Toxic, Thunder Wave, Reflect,(comma) and Safeguard. It can utilize a physical defensive set with the above moves in conjunktion conjunction with its high base Defense and Metal Burst. But However, its only form of recovery are is Rest. Cobalion also has Work Up if you want to try a mixed attacking set,(comma) but it's not recommended. You could also use a Choice Specs set,(comma) but it's way far inferior to the above sets.

[Checks and Counters]

Slowbro, Slowbro, Slowbro. It resists both of Cobalion STAB moves and is really hard for Cobalion to take down. As stated above, Stone Edge only 3HKOes Slowbro with one Swords Dance boost. However, it needs to be careful of X-Scissor. Bulky Ghosts like such as Dusclops and Spiritomb can come in on a resisted Fighting-type move and cripple Cobalion with Will-O-Wisp. Choice Band Dugtrio can trap and OHKO Cobalion with a STAB Earthquake. Nidoqueen resists both, Close Combat, Focus Blast,(comma) and Stone Edge,(comma) but needs to be careful if Cobalion is packing Hidden Power Ice. The same goes for Nidoking. Gallade also resists the mentioned moves. It even takes Focus Blast better thanks to its higher Special Defense.,(comma, no period) but it needs to watch out for Hidden Power Ghost. Victini resists both of Cobalion STAB moves and can KO it with V-create.,(comma, no period) but it needs to watch out for Hidden Power Ghost and Stone Edge. Celebi can come in and cripple Cobalion with Thunder Wave. It resists both of its Fighting-type moves and Stone Edge,(comma) but needs to watch out for Hidden Power and X-Scissor. Unaware Quagsire ingnores Cobalion's stat boosts, can survive some hits,(comma) and KO it with STAB Earthquake.

Flying-types such as Zapdos and Altaria are good teammates to Cobalion, as they can take super effective Fighting- and Ground-type moves directed at Cobalion.

move 4: Taunt / Substitute / Flash Cannon

[SET COMMENTS]

This set plays similarly to the above set, but focuses on sweeping using special attacks instead. Calm Mind is paticulary good, as it boosts Cobalion's low Special Defense at the same time. However, Focus Blast is, sadly, the only special Fighting move Cobalion has at its disposal, and its shaky accuracy can be troublesome. The choice of Hidden Power depends on what you want to hit hard. Hidden Power Ice destroys Pokemon such as Gligar, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, and other Ground- and Flying-types who resists your STAB move. Hidden Power Ghost, however, takes care of your other worst enemy, Slowbro, disposing of him quickly while also hitting Victini and Ghost-types hard. Your last slot depends on what you need for your team. Taunt stops other Taunt users from taunting you, as you are faster than them, while also stopping other Pokemon from setting up. Taunt also stops Chansey and Slowbro from healing, and prevents status effects being inflicted. Substitute works well with Focus Blast as it gives extra protection should you miss with it. It also protects you from pseudo-status such as Taunt. Flash Canon is there for a secondary STAB move. It also hit several Pokemon harder than Hidden Power Ghost, if you would opt for that, such as Nidoqueen and Nidoking.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

You can opt to use Hidden Power Fighting over Focus Blast for more PP and accuracy, but you lose both power and coverage if you do. If you want, similarly to the above set, you can option to use a Modest nature for more power. The EV spread can be altered the same way as for the above set to give Cobalion some bulk with a spread of 64 HP / 252 SpA / 192 Spe. You still outspeed positive 100 base Speed Pokemon such as Victini and Mew with a Timid Nature, and neutral base 100 Speed Pokemon with Modest.

The IVs listed above are for Hidden Power Ice. If you use Hidden Power Ghost, go with 30 Def / 30 SpD IVs. The choice of item is the same as for the above set. Leftovers is to keep Cobalion alive as long as possible, and works great with Substitute, while Life Orb gives you more power, which can be nice with Calm Mind's lower boost. Air Ballon can be used here as well to avoid being hit by super effective Ground-type moves often directed at Cobalion.

Unlike the above set, screen support isn't as necessary this time, as Cobalion is already boosting its low Special Defense, but it can help when Cobalion is about to set up. Uxie and Cresselia are again the prime screeners, as they resist both Fighting- and Ground-type moves that Cobalion is weak to. Entry hazards help even more now when the boost isn't as high. Froslass, Roserade, and Deoxys-D, again, can set up hazards, which work very well with Cobalion, as they resist Fighting-type moves. Roserade can also set up Toxic Spikes, while Deoxys can set up Stealth Rock. Uxie can set up Stealth Rock besides screens. Flash Fire Pokemon such as Houndoom and Arcanine help take Victini's V-create, and Flying-types such Zapdos and Altaria can take those super effective Fighting-and Ground-type moves directed at Cobalion.

[Other Options]

Cobalion has access to Quick Attack to finish of weaker opponents, and Double Kick to break through Substitutes. Other physical moves at its disposal includes Retaliate, Return, Aerial Ace, and Poison Jab. Aerial Ace hits Heracross really hard, but the listed moves are much better. In the support department, Cobalion has access to Toxic, Thunder Wave, Reflect, and Safeguard. It can utilize a physical defensive set with the above moves in conjunction with its high base Defense and Metal Burst. However, its only form of recovery is Rest. Cobalion also has Work Up if you want to try a mixed attacking set, but it's not recommended. You could also use a Choice Specs set, but it's far inferior to the above sets.

Bulky Ghost-types such as Dusclops and Spiritomb can come in on a resisted Fighting-type move and cripple Cobalion with Will-O-Wisp. Choice Band Dugtrio can trap and OHKO Cobalion with a STAB Earthquake. Nidoqueen resists Close Combat, Focus Blast, and Stone Edge but needs to be careful if Cobalion is packing Hidden Power Ice. The same goes for Nidoking. Gallade also resists the mentioned moves. It even takes Focus Blast better thanks to its higher Special Defense, but it needs to watch out for Hidden Power Ghost. Victini resists both of Cobalion STAB moves and can KO it with V-create, but it needs to watch out for Hidden Power Ghost and Stone Edge. Celebi can come in and cripple Cobalion with Thunder Wave. It resists both of its Fighting-type moves and Stone Edge, but needs to watch out for Hidden Power and X-Scissor. Unaware Quagsire ingnores Cobalion's stat boosts, can survive some hits, and KO it with STAB Earthquake.

[Dream World]

Cobalion doesn't get a Dream World ability.
