Tracer Bullets: Porygon2 Discussion

Last one about Porygon2 was never, so I thought it's time for one.

Porygon2.png

Porygon2 (Normal)
Base Stats: 85 HP / 80 Atk / 90 Def / 105 SAtk / 95 SDef / 60 Spd
Ability: Trace (copies opponent's ability; now works with Intimidate!)
Ability: Download (Porygon2 raises itself in the offensive stat that the opponent is weakest against)

Notable Physical Movepool
Return
Double-Edge
Aerial Ace

Notable Special Movepool
Tri Attack
Thunderbolt
Thunder
Ice Beam
Blizzard
Signal Beam
Psychic
Shadow Ball
Discharge

Notable Support Movepool
Sharpen
Thunder Wave
Recover
Psych Up

Pory2 is much more defensive than its newer brother Porygon-Z, which allows it to take hits from DD Gyarados and SD Garchomp rather well. I'm wondering if there's a point to running Download ever, it could be pretty fun against Garchomp etc. with a mixed Porygon2 moveset.

Porygon2 @ Leftovers
Nature: Bold (+Def -Atk) or Modest (+SAtk -Atk)
Trait: Trace
EVs: 228 HP / 172 Def / 108 SAtk
-Thunderbolt
-Ice Beam
-Tri Attack
-Recover

Staple Porygon2. Bold lets it take hits from Gyarados and Garchomp better, Modest helps against other opponents since either nature's Ice Beam will OHKO Garchomp and 2HKO Gyarados with Thunderbolt.

Porygon2 @ Leftovers
Nature: Brave (+Atk -Spd)
Trait: Trace
EVs: 228 HP / 136 Def / 144 SAtk
-Sharpen
-Return
-Thunderbolt
-Recover

Sharpen Pory2. Not much to say aside from anti-stalling.

I don't think you understand how Download works (from your wording). Depending on whether or not the opponent's Defense or Special Defense is weaker, Porygon's Attack or Special Attack is raised (respectively).

Against something like Garchomp, Porygon 2's Special Attack would be raised, since Garchomp's weaker defense stat is Special Defense.

Ah, I had been wondering about that. Fixing now.

Download raises............... blahblahblah beaten soundly.

Download is better suited for Porygon-Z though, so you had a slight point.

Download raises Porygon2's attack if the opponent's Defense is less than its special Defense. It raises Porygon2's Special Attack if the opponent's Special Defense is less than its defense.

So it does have its uses.

How much is the increase in the offensive stat, one stage? It does sound pretty useful currently, but I'm not sure if I'd give up trapping Dugtrio and Jibacoil with Trace for it right now.

Porygon2 should always run Trace over Download, IMO. This is due to the fact that switching into Pokemon such as Gyarados or Salamence will result in a lowering of these Pokemon's attack power due to Trace'd Intimidate activating.

Electro Levitate and Magic Coat are worthy of note if only for the novelty factor. So is Trick Room since it could be used on a Trick Room team.

Aside from that I'd agree that a Defensive Bolt-Beamer is the way to go, beign a Gyarados, Salamence and Garchomp counter is pretty cool.

Agreed. Also, it sets Porygon2 apart from Porygon-Z still further.

Pory2's one of my all-time favorites, and I'm definitly using him over Z for some major surprise. Plus, Garchomp counter! ^_^

I'm surprised T-wave didn't get a mention on this guy; with recover and sturdy defenses he's pretty good at stalling for full paralysis while staying healthy.

Porygon2 isn't really different from what it was in ADV... I wouldn't bother with Download either, since Trace Pory2 is a great Gyarados counter.

Does anyone know whether P2 is being put on the tier lists yet? I think he should be.

And yes, P2 will be awesome for Garchomp, Salamence, etc. *cheers*

Porygon2 is in a really tight spot. It's supposed to be defensive, but it doesn't have enough defense to defend against Garchomp/Salamence/etc. People, stop saying that Porygon2 can stop those Pokemon, because it can't.

i'm just not sure why someone would post a Porygon2 set after there was a set with PorygonZ. I don't mean to be rude, but Porygon 2 can me slightly mentioned in the PorygonZ set anyway.

Garchomp's Earthquake vs. Max HP 281 Defense Porygon2 (still leaves him with 270 special attack).

37 - 44% and 74 - 87% after a Swords Dance if Jolly
41 - 48% and 81 - 95% after a Swords Dance if Adamant

Plus, it traces Sand Veil which is nice if Sandstorm is flying around. No loss of Leftovers recovery and Garchomp might miss.

So it beats the Swords Dancer, but not the CBer. It's screwed against Salamence unless it's a Dragon Dancer.

It beats Gyarados because of Trace -> Intimidate. After Intimidate, Waterfall barely scratches P2. It would work on Salamence too except Salamence is generally special...

Does Porygon2 gave a certain higher stat than PorygonZ?

Edit: Nvr mind, I saw that it has higher defense. Maybe it does serve a different purpose.

Porygon2 has higher Def and SpDef than PorygonZ, whereas PorygonZ has a higher SpAtk and Spd than Porygon2.

This will be my Porygon2, now that Trace also works with Intimidate is better, and there are other useful combos: Tracing Water Absorb (switching into Vaporeon's Surf), Volt Absorb (Jolteon's T.Bolt), Electric Engine (You know, Electivire switchs into my Skarm, i switch to P2 because of the obvious upcoming T.Bolt), Arena Trap, Chlorophyll, Color Glasses (This plus BoltBeam rules, i mean this practically erases any 2x resistance and the 4x resistance become 2x resistance), Dry Skin, Filter, Flower Head, Hard Rock, NOW there are lot of abilities that want to be Traced :P

Tracing Chlorophyll is useless without at least 200 Speed though.

Porygon2 can stop those Pokemon.

405 Attack Salamence STAB Dragon Claw on 384 HP, 280 Defense (252 and 156 EVs respectively, +Defense nature):

125 minimum (32%)
136 average (35%)
148 max (38%)

Thanks to the Traced Intimidate Salamence will never do more on a switch-in, or after one Dragon Dance as long as you are smart enough to bring Porygon2 in right away. Gyarados does even less than this.

359 Attack Landshark (max with no beneficial nature) Earthquake on 384/280 HP/Def Porygon2:

36% minimum
39% average
42% max with Earthquake.

394 Attack Landshark (max with +Attack) Earthquake on 384/280 HP/Def Porygon2:

39% minimum
43% average
46% maximum

That means a Swords Danced Earthquake will never KO, whatever you do, allowing you to always Recover.

Using a Porygon2 spread like this you can still have about 270 Special Attack. Gachomp has a 50% chance to survive that at full health with 4 HP EVs and no Special Defense. If Stealth Rock, Spikes or any damage are into play it will be OHKOed.

Porygon2 can only have 374 HP max. Small difference to your 384 calculations but worth noting. In addition that EV spread (252 HP / 156 Def) allows for 100 SAtk, making for 271, not 270, but now I'm nitpicking. It takes ~48% max from +atk Garchomp's Earthquake, so it can still Recover without much issue.

Also of note is that Sand Veil SHOULD make P2 immune to Sandstorm if it is out, in addition to giving it that sexy evade. After all, Sand Veil makes Cacturne immune to Sandstorm, and its type is always Grass/Dark.
