Cottonnee (QC: 0/3)

Cottonee

[Overview]

There is not much to say about Cottonee. With the Eviolite, it is bulkier than Whimsicott however the lack of Leftovers hurts a lot. On top of that, it produces a weaker Substitute. Whimsicott is OU though so none of that matters in UU, Cottonee might not preform as good of a role but it still can preform quite well. On top of that, Cottonee can fit onto almost any team due to its amazing abuse of its Prankster ability.

[SET]

name: Encore
move 1: Encore
move 2: Leech Seed
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Toxic / Stun Spore
item: Eviolite
ability: Prankster
nature: Calm
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
ivs: 0 Atk

[SET COMMENTS]

- come in on a weak grass or water move and use Encore

- Leech Seed then Substitute

- Toxic to poison the foe and make them rack up more damage

- Eviolite to boost defences past Whimsicott's

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

- EV spread maximizes it taking special hits due to all the bulky water types

- minimize Attack for confusion

- can make four 70 HP substitutes and be left with 3 HP

- an EV spread of 248 HP / 108 Def / 152 SpD can be used for more balanced defences but Cottonee worries more about special attackers

- if Toxic Spikes support is being used, Stun Spore is used to paralyze for a free turn of set up

[Other Options]

- Taunt can stop those who use healing moves or have access to Taunt themselves

- Giga Drain to heal more but it is best if it does not attack

- Fake Tears is a poor choice as the foe can switch out

- Tickle for aid a teammate with Pursuit but the foe can switch out as Cottonee lacks Pursuit

- Stun Spore can paralyze for a free turn of set up but Cottonee prefers poison over paralysis

- priority Switcheroo but it is best left to choice users like Manectric

- EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD although it increases HP recovery, it does not take hits as well

- Leftovers or Big Root but these make Cottonee lose out on a lot of bulk

[Checks and Counters]

- grass types

- moves that hit multiple times

- priority Taunt when Substitute is gone

- priority moves from Pokemon who have over base 66 Speed

- grass types

[Dream World]

Cottonee gets Chlorophyll from the Dream World. Although it is a great ability, Cottonee relies on Prankster to function so its best to pass up on it.

Maybe mention protect? lets you get more leech seed damage / recovery and can scout for trickers.
Last time I checked, Substitute protects you from Trick and you can use Substitute to rack up damage. Unless someone prove me wrong, I don't think it's worth a mention.

I really hope and pray to god that this will be rejected.

your evs are terrible; they should be 252 HP / 120 Def / 132 Calm for roughly equal stats. I realize that it gets most of its health from leech seed, but that's not a reason to use an awful spread.

grass types should be counter number one. even better is that the top 3 uu grass types (celebi, shaymin, and rose) all have natural cure, meaning that cottonee literally cannot do anything to them.

Yeah the EV spread should be 252 HP / 252 SpD imo, since raping bulky Waters should be your top priority.

Why is Stun Spore even considered? Make that last slot Toxic and nothing else, that way you're not completely dominated by Grass-types (Roserade still rapes you).

I'll come back later with more suggestions.

Forgot about grass types, thank you. Personal preference but I guess that doesn't count in this situation.

To be honest, I prefer Breludicolo's spread over yours but since your a QC member, I can't argue with it. Your spread is still weak to physical priority. Also, no to your spread! With 252 HP EVs, Cottonee has 284 HP which makes exactly 4 Substitutes so I put in a similar spread.

What if your team's using Toxic Spikes, can you come up with what to use if that's the case?

I don't understand the concept of wanting "balanced defenses" at all. You can argue that it gives you the "best" defenses overall, but it leaves you weak to the strongest attacks of both physical and special attacks. If you commit to one defense, you ensure that very few things can break you on that side. You should have a teammate to cover your weaker defense. Unless with balanced defenses you cover every important attack (i.e. your name is Dusclops), you should usually commit to one defense.

This is just basic intuition, I haven't done any calcs for Cottonee. If you can show that with balanced defenses Cottonee survives everything it needs to, go ahead and use such a spread.

Slash Stun Spore if your team is using Toxic Spikes.

Now that I've though about it, I'm going to agree with you on this one as majority of the priority in UU is coming from Fake Out (which doesn't do much if Cottonee is behind a Substitute) and Ice Shard which come from hard hitting Pokemon.

Slash Stun Spore if your team is using Toxic Spikes.
Thank you.

It's funny, although Whimsicott and Cottonee are played the same way, what defence you focus on with them is the exact opposite.
