2 vs. 2 Analysis: Rhyperior pt. 2 (Trick Room)

Rhyperior's 2 vs. 2 use, part 2
Rhyperior and the usefulnes of Trick Room

Alright, we already know Rhyperior's speed is a bit lacking, but it's defenses and attacking power in the physical department is awesome. There are a few users of Trick Room which pop out to me lately (non super class or legend class as I don't know much about them, but if you wish to analyse, you are welcome to do so).

Preferred Trick Room Choice: Alakazam
Ability: Inner Focus (Anti-flinch)
Nature: Modest (+SpATK, -ATK), Timid (-ATK, +SPD)
Moveset
-Protect
-Trick Room
-Psychic
-Guard Swap *Breeding Required*

EV Setup: 252 SPD, 252 SpATK, 6 HP

Alright, this is one kickin partner for Rhyperior. With Trick Room on first turn, you can allow Rhyperior to attack first for the next 5 turns (but, I doubt the battle will last that long if you do use it). You also have the ability to use Guard Swap, an interesting technique were you can swap your own SpDEF and DEF with another Pokemon. So, if someone sends out a Physical tanker against Rhyperior or their own Rhyperior, you can always use Guard Swap and get Rhyperior's DEF and give it Alakazam's abismally low DEF, helping to disarm your own opponent. Protect, of course, for the Earthquake to keep it away from itself, especially if you haven't used Guard Swap yet. However, since it is unknown if a swap would cause a stat reset, the move is a bit unpredictable.

Secondary Option: Xatu
Ability: Synchronize
Nature: Modest (+SpATK, -ATK), Timid (-ATK, +SPD)

Moveset 1:
-Trick Room
-Reflect
-Psychic
-Guard Swap
Same setup for Akakazam, but since you don't need Protect to miss Quake, Reflect is a much better choice since Guard Swap can give you Rhyperior's DEF. Overall, fairly simple.
EV Setup: 252 SPD, 252 SpATK, 6 HP

Moveset 2:
-Trick Room
-Psycho Shift
-Psychic
-Guard Swap
Alright, an interesting combo for Xatu. Psycho Shift + Synch = Nice try, asshole. With Synch in 2 on 2, you will be able to give your opponent who used the move the Special Condition and, during the next turn, shift your own condition to their partner, helping to disable your opponent. Overall, still a good Pokemon to use.
EV Setup: 252 SPD, 252 SpATK, 6 HP

Trick Room ALWAYS goes last so Trick Rooming Zam sucks :S

Go with something more defensive, like Uxie, Mesprit or Dusknoir

BUt Zam is one of the fastest pokemon, so it could activate trick room, allowing the next move to come from rhyperior and not giving the opponent any breathing room.

It ALWAYS goes last, meaning alakazam will be attacked before trick room ever goes off. Alakazam and taking attacks dont mix too well.

Yeah, Trick Room has the absolute worst move priority, going after even Roar and Whirlwind. This is the main disadvantage to an otherwise very powerful move. When picking a Trick Room Pokémon, I'd aim for survivability. Bronzong with Levitate would be my first pick alongside Rhyperion.

Also, remember that even if Alakazam survives one round to get Trick Room off, it then becomes an incredibly slow Pokémon for the next four rounds.

Slowbro and Slowking are some of the best Trick Roomers. Even Metagross can pull it off.

"Willis used Nasty Plot!"

"What you plottin about Willis?"

Jirachi is the best Trick Roomer, it can Tbolt the usual Skarm and Suicune phazers getting the way and Somersault (fuck U-turn), away to counter whatever poke they bring in. Bronzong is a wall, but can't really do anything to other pokes besides Hypnosis and Explosion.

I wouldn't say it can't to anything to other Pokémon. For one thing, It's looking like it'll be the best user of Gyro Ball. Also, remember that this is a 2v2 team we're talking about. Having a Pokémon on your team that plays a supportive role isn't necessarily a bad idea. So, you could give it Trick Room, Gyro Ball, Heal Block and Safeguard, as an example.

Trick Room seems pretty good on Dusknoir. If you want survivability, I can't think of much better than 135 on both defenses. Bronzong comes with a weakness to Eruption and Heat Wave, which could be problematic.

I agree that Dusknoir is also a great user of Trick Room, but for maximal compatibility with Rhyperior, I'd prefer something with Levitate. I guess this has turned into more of a Trick Room thread than a Rhyperior thread, though.

See, I didn't know Trick Room went last. That would most definately make someone like Slowbro or that better choices. But, Protect can also help ya out there, too.

Both Jirachi and Dusknoir learn gravity, making them awesome partners to Rhyperior. Dusknoir may be better up to the task since he isn't EQ weak like Jirachi is.

Claydol deserves a mention for 2v2 for being able to trick room and being immune to EQ.
