Uh, Sanders, for the ones whose titles aren't so apparent, please label.

Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

Elliott - Songs In The Air

M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us (goes from really uplifting to incredibly melancholy seamlessly)

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

And, honestly, anything ever made by Godspeed You Black Emperor!

enigma - love sensuality devotion, ("i" wouldnt say its depressing but it has that vibe to it)

b*witched, depressing on a whole other level ( >_> free columbia house cd )

I wouldn't say Enigma have any depressing albums. The beats kinda negate that. MCMXC a.D is the closest thing they have to depressing with tracks like Mea Culpa and The Voice & the Snake.

Katatonia - Tonight's Decision

or basically anything that comes from doom metal.

It's got a few not depressing songs but overall a listen from this would really tone me down ok. The thing is, some of the more upbeat songs strike me as depressing...so I'm leaning towards sad.

Raw emotion...few months before Kurt Cobain's suicide iirc so it's no wonder.

Seconding...it's all sulking.

Just a really dark album...makes me feel really alienated no matter what my mood is.

seconding closer
also agreeing with mellon collie except for tonight tonight.

But the real winner is My Bloody Valentine - Loveless.

lol what, that's probably one of the most depressing songs on there

and yeah I was going to say MBV but I knew someone else would (:

Closer by Joy Division is probably one of the most depressing albums ever in existence, so I third it.

Other than that...

1. Leonard Cohen - Recent Songs

Perhaps Cohen's most depressing album, and that's saying a lot considering that Cohen is so depressing that Kurt Cobain included the famous song lyric "Give me Leonard Cohen afterworld / So I can sigh eternally" in one of Nirvana's more famous songs. Hell, The Smokey Life alone, with Cohen plodding away on his guitar and bittersweet lines like "Let's be married for one more night" should let you know what you're in for...

2. Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People

Mogwai's a pretty depressing band at best, but at least Young Team and Mr. Beast have their exhilerating moments. This is pure, unbridled morose post-rock (and I love every minute of it!).

...there's more, like Fevers and Mirrors (Bright Eyes at their most depressing), 95% of Nick Cave's stuff, My Bloody Valentine of course, a lot of Cat Power. But I feel like those two had to be mentioned...

Mogwai most definitely. there are a couple of pink floyd songs that just depress me but i cant think of the names currently

Bethlehem - Dark Metal

Bethlehem - Dictius Te Necare

Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down

Forgotten Tomb - Songs to Leave

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans

My%20Dying%20Bride-Turn%20Loose%20the%20Swans.jpg

All depressing metal albums that every fan of this music should have. I highly recommend My Dying Bride and, of course, Katatonia, to pretty much anyone. I feel that most people here in Smogon can enjoy both those bands.

I should really pull out My Dying Bride, I have three albums by those guys, just never listened to them.

Katatonia is of course awesome.

heyhey

However

Dinosaur Jr. - Where you been
I don't even find most DinoJr depressing, and this isn't my favorite album by them, but it's the most depressing I've heard.

Also seconding Spiderland and In the aeroplane over the sea, especially Washer and the last minutes of Oh Comely.

Thirding the Sunny Day Real Estate, and seconding Sigur Ros. I was a little divided on that album so I didn't post it, but I guess looking back even the uplifting tracks are still wicked depressing.

Also seconding Spiderland and In the aeroplane over the sea, especially Washer and the last minutes of Oh Comely.

Oh FUCK man, Washer

promise me the sun will rise again

And then very end of that album, the last minute of Good Morning, Captain... good god. So emotionally driven.
