Stuff that's wrong with D/P

Even with everything I'm about to say, I still give the game a 9 out of 10. It's that good.

Go buy it now.

1) So they finally made flash a TM, but gave us an even MORE worthless HM with MORE restrictions on who gets it - Defog.

2) Breeding produces a level 1 egg. Cool if you want to EV train for level 5 cup or level 10 cup, but aside from that just makes it more annoying to determine IVs. (Must IV battle or have plenty of rare candies)

3) The DELAYS are horrendous. Each battle takes ages, between the Pokemon slowly entering the field, dancing around like buffoons, and the text prints at speeds even a second grader could finish reading well before they scroll by - the delays are single-handedly the worst new change. It seems that every action and every text dialouge in combat has about a half a second tacked onto it, which essentially doubles even the most basic fights (get in, OHKO, get out - takes barely under twice as long to complete from Advance. I checked.)

4) I look like a nerd in the Union Room. OT Dan with trainer ID 21000 (non-hacked, first start too!)

What do you guys NOT like about D/P? =P This is more or less a fun thread.

Since this is the only concern you posted that is worth considering....

In past games it was possible to turn off battle animations and increase text speed using the game options. Since I don't have D/P... I can't be sure... but I'd guess that option is available here too.

You can be sure that I've already done this. The text speed still doesn't appear faster than I can read it, but the real killer is the pause. After the full string has displayed, it pauses for almost a full second before displaying the next string, even if it's a multipart string. This quickly adds up when you consider:

A wild Starly appears! (pause)
(animation of Pokemon coming out, like 6 seconds)
Luxio's indimiates lowers the wild Starly's (pause)
attack! (pause)
What should Luxio do?
(pick some attacks)
(pause for no reason here)
Luxio used Spark! (pause)
It's super effective! (pause)
Starly fainted. (faint animation, and pause)
(more pause)
You receive exp! (pause)
(pause)
(exit animation)

That's the most basic fight ever, a super effective OHKO. The whole thing takes forever, especially when you're just trying to level up quickly. The individual fight isn't bad, but when you figure there's 10 or so a level...

I've just started using repels and doing trainer battles. I'm vastly underleveled, but at least it's going by quicker. It's a great challenge to be 2-6 levels under the Pokemon I'm fighting, too. Especially when those 6 levels are 25% of my own, it's like fighting level 100's with 75's. =P

Oh, and don't even use rain dance or anything like that, it'll be even worse.

I don't mind Fog Clear much just because it fits better on a 2 HM slave duo since the one with fly can normally learn it, but anyway, here are my DP pet peeves!:

1) You got it already, but holy shit it takes forever to fight random encounters. Trainer battles(especially 2v2) can be bad too, and I had a super fun round of Sandstream and double Leftovers in the Battle Tower yesterday and nearly killed myself. Animations being off make this a little more bearable but it still takes forever.

2) Speaking of the Battle Tower, not only does it cheat like crazy(nearly as much as the Frontier in Emerald), but the first 20 trainers are such absolute rabble that it is a waste of about half an hour every time you lose. They really should have ramped up the difficulty/reward here, I got enough mindless trash plowing in WoW.

3) This is really trivial but list of things I hate: events that only occur at certain times. events that occur only on certain days.

Go die, Drifloom and Choice Specs.

4) The GTS in general. The search feature being a bit more advanced would be nice, as would 90% of the things I search for not requesting a l100 uber.

The random battles had me pulling my hair out, especially in those caves that require you to ride your bike with precision to jump over those FUCKING RAMPS. How in the hell are you supposed to manuever yourself around a 10 step maze of rocks that you can't stop moving in when there are random battles EVERY THREE STEPS? aaaaaaargh! I strongly suggest having a minimum of 10 max repels in your pack at all times.

Eggs hatching at level 1 isn't so bad. I just slap an exp share on a good prospect and take it to a route adjacent to the survival area. It only takes like 3 battles.

What has me going insane at present is the catch rate on legends. I've been on Giradina for 2 days now trying to get a decent one, and i'm only able to catch about 1 in 3. How come a paralyzed Giratina in red HP still has his freedom after 90 dusk balls, in a cave, at night? Uxie was a bitch, too.

Oh, and here's something you might not be aware of: if you alter the DS's internal clock, there will be a clash with the D/P pak's internal clock which will cause you to have to wait a further 24 hours until you can transfer pokemon from GBA games again. This is just great news for the people that can't be awake at 2 in the morning for the choice specs event.

So far the only thing I hate is the encounter rate. It seems to be unbelievably high in comparison to the older games. Also, as mentioned, the battles do take longer, but the graphics are so nice that I've enjoyed watching them for the most part. I'm sure it will get old at some point at which point I'll turn off the animations but for now it's not bothering me.

Was it just me, or was the random encounter rate ramped up? I don't remember ever resorting to using repel -everywhere- before.

I've complained about it before, but choppy animation. It's like the refresh rate is lower or they've skipped frames to save money or something. It gives me a headache whenever I play for over an hour.

Level 1 eggs is a bitch too, you can't really just exp share btw because exp share gives EVs.

the only things I really find wrong is the lack of certain moves or abilities on pokes:

-Why doesn't Voltorb/Electrode have the Detonate ability? much better than Soundproof for him and fits the dex entries.

-Metagross should get the Levitate ability. It's dex entry says it flies and Steven in Emerald used his to travel and fly all around Hoenn. Same with the Magnezone line (though I'm sure everyone will prefer Magnet Pull).

-Cradily wants Leech Seed and Knock Off

-Ludicolo wants Aqua Ring

-Entei and Flareon both want Flare Drive

-Flygon wants Dragon Dance

-Lucario wants a Fight-version of Pursuit

-Suicune and Uxie want Recover

-Forretress wants a phazing move. . .perhaps Whirlwind? (hey if Drapion and Rampardos can get it so can he!)

-Shuckle wants Seismic Toss

-Dusknoir wants T-Wave and Stealth Rocks

-Mantine wants Whirlwind and Stealth Rocks

-Walrein wants Ice Shard

-Hypno wants Wish (not just as NYPC), Baton Pass (not just XD), and Yawn

-Wishcash wants Stealth Rocks, Thunder Wave, Recover, and Curse

-Metagross should get the Levitate ability. It's dex entry says it flies and Steven in Emerald used his to travel and fly all around Hoenn. Same with the Magnezone line (though I'm sure everyone will prefer Magnet Pull).
It's called "balance". Same with several other of your "suggestions".

Yeah, I guess. I'm just a bit biased because Meta seems to get so little love this gen. He could end up falling of the radar like Dragonite. *sigh*

Metagross will suffer as long as Earthquake remains popular. Personally I've always felt Fighting should resist Ground to help remedy this, but the type chart is really hard to change without breaking something else. Also, I think something needs to be done so that Psychic isn't quite as much of a liability as it is. I really can't think of many Pokemon that are better off being Psychic than any other type. Its not like its a particularly good type, offensively or defensively. It really seems like the whole Psychic/Fighting/Poison/Bug part of the chart could use a bit of work.

4) I look like a nerd in the Union Room. OT Dan with trainer ID 21000 (non-hacked, first start too!)

You can change the way you look in a Pokemon Center near the begining of the game. I think It's either in Jubilife or Florama, but just check every town up to Eternia with a Pokemon Center and I guarantee he's in one of those. Talk to him and he'll give you a choice of 4 trainer types (IE Bug Catcher, Black Belt ect.), which are depent on your trainer ID and gender. Choose the one which you want to look like in the Union Room. So if you don't want to look like a Nerd in the Union Room, you have three other choices, hopefully one that will suit your liking.

As for things I don't like about this game, I have only two large complaints...well actually three. The first, as some of your have mentioned, is the sheer number of wild Pokemon encounters. I was forced to buy 99 Max Repels because I was so tired of fighting them, and I've never had to do that in a Pokemon game before (as someone else has mentioned before, they're especially annoying when attempting to jump the bike ramps. I remember having to do the four-in-a-row bike ramp jump in Victory Road, only to encounter a wild Pokemon just before I went over the last ramp. As I didn't have enough momentum to go over the last ramp, I had to bike my bum back to the begining).

The second complaint I have is no random-Wi-Fi opponents. The system they have now at least guarantees you fight opponents of good skill, but it takes to much time to prepare for and something's always going wrong or someone's always not there. I just wish there was a random opponent option if you just want to have a quick battle right there and then. They can keep the Friend Code system as well, but a random battle system to go along with that would be very peachy.

And finally, my third and largest complaint...SURFING IS SO SLOW! I don't know about you guys, but I feel that this game has the slowest surfing out of any other Pokemon game that has ever been released. It's agonizing to get on the waters now, as not only does it take forever to reach shore unless you're surfing a pond, it's much harder to avoid trainers becauase you're moving as slow as a Slowpoke in molasses. Even searching for water Pokemon in the Pal Park makes me want to inflict blunt trauma on a young child, as it takes next to forever to cover some ground. Please bring back the quick surf from RSE next gen.

Other than that though, I find the game quite peachy, probably one of the best, if not the best Pokemon game I've ever played (with Gold/Silver being a possible usurper because of it's awesome two-part story and nostalgic value).

Metagross will never fall off the radar.

Thats like suggesting Salamance will become UU anytime soon just because everything has Stone Edge, Ice this/that and Stealth Rock. Metagross's typing and stats is excellent and its trait is far far far more annoying than you'd think. For one thing, I can't Intimidate the damn thing.

I also know its defenses aren't anything to put down either since I've seen multiple times where I've let rip with a STAB 328 attack Sandslash EQ and it comes just abit under 50% or dead on the mark but recovered off with Leftovers. Same goes for its fire weakness where basically anything non-STAB won't kill it.

It's called "balance". Same with several other of your "suggestions".
I honestly think balance went out the window a long time ago, but even with that said. You're right, some of those suggestions are far too extreme. I mean Suicune with Recover? What? Why?

Anyway a few gripes I have.

-Defog, would be nice if they cleared all weather and spikes outside of 2vs2 since Rapid Spin is absolutely AWFUL. I don't think I've ever seriously used it because its so obscenely weak, blockable and limited. I still cling to the hope somebody will discover some overlooked move which copies the effect.

-The gap between 00bers and standard continues to widen. In GSC it was possible to go into a fight against 00bers and still come out a winner. Nowadays a simple Lati@s, Groundon, Kyogre is likely to rip you inside out to hell and back.

Level 1 eggs is a bitch too, you can't really just exp share btw because exp share gives EVs.

I save at the beginning of every breeding session, and if a prospect fails to impress after ramping up its leves a bit, I just soft reset with no harm or foul. Another way is to count the level-ramping process in with your EV training. In the area around stark mountain, you can find all kinds EV pokes at high levels.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the god damn surfing. So. damn. slow.

True. It's still quite annoying compared to breeding in Emerald though, where you could get a good enough idea at level 5 of which children you should save to check later and which you could throw out immediately, without even touching Metalkid's calculator or the Battle Frontier guy.

One of the poster's around here keeps it on his quote and it just stuck with me I guess. So I guess Snorlax with Slack Off is too much too huh?

Not really, Snorlax can still get destroyed by something as trivial as a Hitmontop and is still slower than a retarded Slowbro. This coming from experience as a Hitmontop user, as long the fat beast doesn't critical than you should have a 100% win record.

Suicune is on a whole different level altogether with a defense which is literally double of Snorlax's and no physical weakness till recently and enough speed to keep up with even Heracross.

It means just about any attack which is a threat to Suicune can been seen a mile away and promptly dealt with.

Ugh, yes. I swear, this game has THE highest encounter rate of any generation. Having a ton of Max Repels is a godsend in this game otherwise you will be driven utterly crazy.

The 24 hour Pal Park thing is annoying (especially since I screwed up my first transfer 'cause I was too excited about being able to use it) but I might be able to get used to it.

I believe (I'm reseting Dialga right now so I haven't gotten to the Park yet) that its 24 hours per cartridge. If you've got multiple 3rd Gen games you can transfer more than 6 a day from my understanding. If that's correct, and you own all 5 3rd Gen games and both D/P, that comes to something like 60 Pokemon a day. At that rate you could fill up your D/P inventory in a little over a week.

As far as speed is concerned, I simply can't tell. The new ratio and perspective in the game throws off my sense of movement, I really need to clock it to see the difference in tiles per second. Surfing definitely seems a little slow though.

I agree with everyones complaint about the encounter rate. It is crazy. Like one time I encountered 3 pokemon in a row on the same freaking square of grass. Thats insane.

And surfing too, omg why the hell is surfing so goddamn slow. Good thing there arent that many places to surf.

It's my understanding that the Elite 4 in DP are of higher levels than in RSE. Could the encounter rate be there so that less experienced players just grind more without exactly realizing it, winding up and about lvl 60 by the time they're done?

I noticed the considerable difference between the Elite 4 levels from RBY to GSC, but the encounter rates felt about the same.

Some of the Pokemon calls are really annoying and don't make any sense. Like, why the fuck does Toxicroak squeak? Shouldn't it... I dunno... CROAK?

The first and second gen Pokemon calls need a makeover too, they sound terrible.

The pokeball catch rates are idiotically low. I just fought heatran down to a sliver of health and after 22 @q#$%# ULTRA BALLS AND 8 @#$@% DUSK BALLS he wouldn't catch. Oh yeah and then he ran out of PP and killed himself with one turn of struggle recoil. What fun. Idiotic game design for no reason. After ten pokeballs in the red the next ball should catch no matter what. Certainly if they run out of PP and you've thrown 20 of the best ball you can buy you should catch them. As annoying a feature as I've ever encountered in any video game.

And I love the people without the game posting and telling us how things were in RSE. If you don't have the game why are you even in this thread?

OP's number 3 point is dead on, the game moves mind numbingly slowly. When you hit someone, sometimes the life creeps down for 2-4 seconds on a OHKO. Then you have weather and poke effects (intimidate) that scroll across the screen slowly. Two on Two battles are a nightmare.

They should have really done more to remove the tedium out of this game.
I don't mind that it's a long boring grind to get pokemon with the right moveset/IVs/EVs/trait/personality. At least that's rewarding in some OCD way. But why does the game itself have to be so fucking tedious?
I don't get why they can't make Repel a key item that you can toggle on or off. You're probably going to run away if you don't want to fight, so why annoy people with all these animations for nothing? The game is still super easy. The hardest thing in this game (and all of the previous ones) is having enough PP to beat everyone with your overleveled starter. And there's still a ton of useless Tentacools, Geodudes and Zubats along the way. There's still the trainer with 6 Magikarps. What's the point of that? Nostalgia is nice when you have GOOD memories of something. Level 1 babies also make no sense what so ever.
