Monferno to the Rescue!

Monferno to the Rescue!

After battling on the ladder for a while, I've noticed more 'stallish' teams with the combition of Celebi + Heatran higher up in the ladder. They really make a great pair - Celebi easily being able to take those beastly (Water/Ground) attacks aimed at Heatran, and likewise the (Bug/Fire/Ice/Ghost?) attack's aimed at Celebi, Heatran can take it like a pro.

To be honest, these two combined are the biggest trouble my 'NFE' team runs into that I've faced so far (along with the other specific threats I find troubling for this team - Reuniclus, Choice Band Haxorus/Dragonite, Sub/Calm Mind Latias/Jirachi) which is precisely why I chose this match in particular. Not because of the way I played because to be honest I played alright but far from perfect. I mean it's not like I could make any super predictions here either (Scyther does not carry Brick Break so there is no way in hell I can make one of those nice predictions from the obvious switch from Celebi into Heatran, furthermore Magneton is Scarfed which is going to be a real negative this match because if I want to hit Celebi with Flash Cannon or Hidden Power, he can easily switch into Heatran whilst Hazard damage wears me down. Additionally my wall against Heatran, Porygon2 is doing a mere 10% with discharge to it which easily allows him to recover with leftovers plus he has the move Protect so I'm going in the negatives now. Furthermore I know if I go into Shellos to counter Heatran he's going into Celebi and Icy Wind does crappy damage to it. If I go into Monferno I'm totally out walled by Latias extra.) Anyway before I bore myself with my own voice lol, the point being, I chose this match because I'm fully aware of the difficulty my team has against Heatran + Celebi, not for epic predictions, not for epic nail biting exciting omg what's going to happen next experience, but just sheerly because based on the two teams and move sets, I know it's going to be a real challenge for me.

Warning: He's using a semi stall team so there is going to be a heck of a lot of switching. Stop reading now if this bores you/put's you off but if not, then enjoy!

Right I'm not liking this match up because I fear that Terrakion could possibly be Scarfed. Additionally, Magneton looks like an essential Pokemon to keep in order to trap his Skarmory and possibly revenge kill Lucario/Heatran. Therefore I decide to switch into SandShrew in order to determine his item and hopefully kill of Terrkion or set up Stealth Rocks depending on the assessment of the situation.

Turn 1

Rosevee called Magneto back!
Rosevee sent out Sandy (Sandshrew)!
The foe's Terrakion used Close Combat!
Sandy lost 40% of its health!
The foe's Terrakion's Defense fell!
The foe's Terrakion's Special Defense fell!

Ok, so it's looking like Terrakion is Choice Scarfed because Choice Band would definitely do over 50% damage to Sandshrew and I don't see LO damage either. I'm assuming now that he'll switch because he's not going to 2KO and nor would he want to take an Earthquake from Sandshrew with that def drop. Therefore I think it's safe for me to go for the Stealth Rocks this turn.

Turn 2

victini493 called Terrakion back!
victini493 sent out Celebi!
Sandy used Stealth Rock!

Woot! I safely manage to set up my Stealth Rocks which will help to break down the stallishness of the battle. Right now I don't like this matchup and I still want to keep Sandshrew for later because he has a decent amount of HP left plus I may need him to Rapid Spin anyway Stealth Rocks to keep my Scyther in good health. Switching into Scyther against Celebi seems like the only reasonable choice here.

Turn 3

victini493 called Celebi back!
victini493 sent out Latias!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Latias!

Rosevee sent out Blade (Scyther)!

Alright so it's a double switch here, but when thinking it through this gives me valuable information. He switched into Latias expecting my Monferno. This therefore means he probably isn't running Earth Power or Psychic on Celebi.

Right so I'm certain I can live any attack Latias throws at me, but secretly hoping that he doesn't know that and stays in while I attack.

Turn 4

victini493 called Latias back!
victini493 sent out Heatran!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Heatran!
Blade used Bug Bite!
It's not very effective... The foe's Heatran lost 7% of its health!
The foe's Heatran restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

123.png

Dang. Here comes the Heatran. My team has serious difficulties with this combination since Scyther which can easily kill Celebi can't do squat to Heatran (no Brick Break)and I have no choice but to hope that I can wear one of them down through my attacks + SR damage.

Right, I see the leftovers and I'm fairly certain that he'll take this opportunity to set up his own Stealth Rocks but Sandshrew fails against Heatran so I have no choice but to go into Porygon2.

Turn 5

Rosevee called Blade back!
Rosevee sent out Uber Duck (Porygon2)!
Uber Duck traced the foe's Heatran's Flash Fire!

This is going to sound ultra lame, but I'm going to go for the Discharge now secretly hoping to get a parahax (shhhh don't tell anyone or they'll tell me off for this xD) and to wear this thing down, because I seriously need Heatran to die.

Turn 6

Uber Duck used Discharge!
The foe's Heatran lost 10% of its health!
The foe's Heatran used Roar!
Pointed stones dug into Sandy!
Sandy (Sandshrew) was dragged out!
The foe's Heatran restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Ok, so my attack is doing roughly the same amount as he is recovering from Leftovers. Not Good.

Anyway he roars me out into Sandshrew and I decide to stay in attack in case he over predicts here thinking that I'm going to switch out and thus use Roar again.

Turn 7

victini493 called Heatran back!
victini493 sent out Latias!

Sandy used Earthquake!

Since he's using Latias and not Latios he's most likely going to set up with Calm Mind. I'm just praying to god he doesn't have Substitute or I will have lost this match for sure.

Switching out into Shellos looks like the safest bet here and hopefully I will be able to Toxic Latias and eventually kill it off.

Turn 8

Rosevee called Sandy back!
Rosevee sent out Bubblegum (Shellos-East)!
Pointed stones dug into Bubblegum!
The foe's Latias used Calm Mind!
The foe's Latias's Special Attack rose!

I use Toxic because it is vital that I start to wear Latias down, especially if it's a calm mind set (and 99% it is).

Bubblegum lost 28% of its health!
Bubblegum used Toxic!
The foe's Latias was badly poisoned!
The foe's Latias restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Latias is hurt by poison!

Ok next I use Icy Wind to slow Latias down just in case I need to revenge kill with Scyther (whilst also hoping he doesn't switch back into Heatran lol).

Turn 10

The foe's Latias used Calm Mind!
The foe's Latias's Special Attack rose!
The foe's Latias's Special Defense rose!
Bubblegum used Icy Wind!
It's super-effective! A critical hit! The foe's Latias lost 25% of its health!
The foe's Latias's Speed fell!
The foe's Latias restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Latias is hurt by poison!

Toxic is taking its tow now so I'm assuming he's going to attack. Recover will heal my health back up and hopefully up enough to outstall and kill this thing.

Turn 11

The foe's Latias used Dragon Pulse!
Bubblegum lost 41% of its health!
Bubblegum used Recover!
Bubblegum regained health!
The foe's Latias restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Wooot! Shellos takes the hit like a beast xD. Now hopefully he'll let this thing die...

I'm using recover of course to try Toxic stall it to death.

I go into Scyther and right now I'm really wishing I had brick break on my move set so that I could predict and break this stall war but I don't...lol xD

I go for the roost just to ensure Stealth Rocks won't kill Scyther once I switch out and in and to also see what his next course of action is.

Turn 14

victini493 called Celebi back!

Right, here I thought that he would predict my switch into Sandshrew and therefore use Close Combat instead of Rock Slide because he's Choice Scarfed, but he actually decides to go straight for the Rock Slide instead and I end up catching a lucky break when his Rock Slide misses.

Turn 15

The foe's Terrakion used Rock Slide!
Blade avoided the attack!
Blade used Aerial Ace!
The foe's Terrakion lost 47% of its health!

Right so I know he's Scarfed but he might not know that I know that, so I take the opportunity to switch into Sandshrew which can absorb that hit like a beast.

After the low damage that move does to Sandshrew, I doubt he'll stay in so I go for the Rapid Spin to get rid of those nasty Stealth Rocks.

Ok...... so it didn't die but maybe I can possibly use this to my advantage. I switch into Monferno because Heatran is on low enough HP to be revenge killed now by Mach Punch. But one problem - My Monferno's attack isn't strong enough to pick off the rest off his team. Hmmm. I know he has protect and he seems to abuse that move so hopefully I will be able to set up a bulk up against him. *Fingers crossed*

The foe's Heatran protected itself!
Gohan used Bulk Up!
Gohan's Attack rose!
Gohan's Defense rose!

Phewph! My plan worked! Now I can finally finish of that Heatran that I've been dying to kill since the start of the match lol.

So he sends out Latias and I think I can finish that off with a Mach Punch. Actually I have no choice in the matter (can't exactly switch into anything else because of the SR + Spikes hazard damage would most likely put anything into a clean KO range and I definitely wont be able to live the hazard damage plus the switch in damage if he chooses to attack. So yea I'm stuck put on Monferno. Fire Punch/Mach Punch isn't going to be doing much either way, if he chooses to recover I'm going to be pretty screwed here.

Turn 54

Gohan used Mach Punch!
It's not very effective... The foe's Latias lost 9% of its health!
The foe's Latias used Dragon Pulse!
Gohan lost 39% of its health!
The foe's Latias restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Latias is hurt by poison!

Holy crap it didn't die!! and I am so glad that he didn't decide to Recover that turn - probably assuming he can kill of my Monferno at 62% HP.

Now I can finish Latias off with another Mach Punch!

Turn 55

Gohan used Mach Punch!

Monferno is on pretty low HP now but once again I don't have a choice but to stay in and attack since my remaining Pokemon are 'useless' against Celebi. I'm not entirely sure of the spread he's running on it but hopefully Monferno will be able to take a resistant hit (since its been revealed throughout the battle that he hasn't got Psychic or Earth Power and will therefore have to attack using a stab resistant Giga Drain), and then I can finally finish him off with a stab Blaze Fire Punch.

Props:

- To Monferno for being the Hero of my team this match.
- To Magneton for trapping and revenge killing two of my opponent's Pokemon (Thank God).
- To my opponent for making this match very challenging!

Slops:

- To Scyther and Sandshrew not really doing anything this battle.
- For not having more hazards on my team to break stall lol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know this battle wasn't the most exciting battle in the world (because of all the switching and stall), but I found it super challenging and that's the way I like it. Hopefully when reading this war story you're not thinking omg when will this end but rather - can't wait to read on to see how you turn this battle around.

Here's the link below though if you could not be bothered to read the whole thing lol:-

(Side Note: If I ever make another war story though, it won't have such heavy stall next time lol (and thus hopefully my commentary will improve too) - I just wanted to use this match because I find Heatran + Celebi one of the most difficult things to deal with with this team. Although I didn't particularly play well (in a general sense), this battle was a real challenge (but I'm not sure if that will come across during the match since it is the kind of team you need to actually use in order to fully understand the individual difficulties one needs to overcome). Anyway... hopefully you guys liked it more than you hated it lol.)

Just a quick warning--and this is completely independent of my opinion of your stories--if you post multiple stories in a short time period they could get locked; someone had that happen before, if memory serves.

It kept me interested in the merit of its originality, although the commentary was still sparse, even though it was long. Consider adding things that make your team effective, like "With Eviolite and 104 Def EVs, my so-and-so takes 45% max from Jolly Terrakion..." or anything that provides evidence that it was intelligently created. Avoid hoping for crits or any luck-based factors to activate in your favor unless you can make it entertaining somehow.

It seems that having this sort of NFE team is important or interesting to you, so you should do more research into how to make it work well against the current standards. I got the impression that you hadn't done enough damage calcs when you Mach Punch'd Latias towards the end, for instance. But I still liked it overall. Continue writing, and next time pick a more compact battle for which you can give rich commentary each turn.

Right you are Ashenlock, Among Amarth posted like 3 warstories in one week (and they were of pretty high quality) and got 1-2 of them locked. I need to find time to read this, but being able to pull off a successful win which pokemon who are completely outclassed by their evolutions in the same tier is impressive.

I'm not gonna lie, you need to work on your battling. Mechanically, everything is perfect, but there's not that *spark* you see in an Alphatron or Opposite Day warstory. Winning with shitty NFEs is far from easy, but there were many times in this battle you could have played better and a couple things I could already see would make your team function better without breaking the all-NFE rule (maybe I'm misunderstanding the rule but that's the sort of thing you need to explain in your commentary.) the commentary, while, as I said above, structured absolutely correctly, is too simple, and that sort of thing only comes from knowing the game better. In short, you've got what it takes but you're still in the learning stage.

Thanks for your feedback guys!!

@Ashenlock:

Oh dang. I guess I better wait a few days before I post another one then lol, but thanx for the warning.

Hmm so I think I understand now, you mean it needs more damage calculations and evaluation? I've been trying to look for a good example of a 'perfect' Warstory but it's hard to find one where everyone is happy with it. Can someone please post me a link to a good one so I get the idea of what to do?

Although luck is part of the game, I wouldn't seriously be wishing bad luck upon my opponent lol. I was just joking around earlier =P (I'm assuming that didn't come across too well since I'm talking to you via typing.)

@verbatim:

Oh man, I really wanted to post more stuff ;-; . (I'm such a troll lol.)

@Pwnemon:

It's ok, I know it's not one of those matches where I played to the best of my ability. I hadn't realised that I hadn't fully explained my reasoning for choosing this match before you said that so I've went back and edited it now.

I'm actually new to this whole warstory thing, but I'll take a look at matches by those you suggested =3

Yea it's an all out NFE team. I originally planned to battle on serebii with this team but whenever I lost I was called a noob and whenever I won I was called a hacker *facepalm*. Just decided to try it out on Smogon for fun since I was getting a hard time on Serebii. I actually like the way the team works besides the specific troubles it has. Although matches like these make me consider Brick Break over Bug Bite with Scyther. The only reason I run Bug Bite is for stab on Rotom-W and a clean OHKO on Latios/Starmie after it lives their attack. Hmm and I may possibly switch Shellos out for Frillfish (better walling capiblities against Volcanora and better overall coverage against that double fighting weakness.)

Too be honest one of the main reasons my commentary is lacking is because I'm not sure how to set out the thing. I suppose its different than just stating the reason why you do something in a wifi battle recording?

I would really appreciate it if someone where to give me a really good example of a warstory to grab inspiration from =3

Thanx!

Well, this is the first warstory I've read so I don't know how they're 'properly' made but I did enjoy the entire match and couldn't wait to see how it ended (even though the title is called Monferno to the Rescue lol) You do have some grammatical errors though but for just starting out I think you did a good job. Can't wait to read more of your battles. (Also, that Spongebob picture on turn 32 was priceless lol)

P.S. Also, you should probably say at the beginning if anyone doesn't wanna read the long battle to scroll down and watch the video

Thanks for your feedback guys!!

Read speed is fun until it kills. Find it on my post list. Forgot to say, this was pretty good imo. Nice

I know I'm being biased but... I LOVE THIS WARSTORY AND I LOVE YOU FOR USING SANDSHREW {competitively}, THE CUTEST POKEMON EVER <3 <3

That's all I have to say =_=

Nice idea using all NFE pokemon, I'm surprised it worked to be honest :p managing to outplay a semi-stall team with pokemon with such relatively weak offenses is an achievement, and it kept me reading the entire time. A few mispredicts but in a game this long it's understandable. Good job!

If you want a good warstory there's nowhere better than the recent Fifth Gen ones in the Warstory Archive (located conveniently directly under the GBU subcategory of Dragonspiral Tower) which is where you'll find the aforementioned Alphatron or Opposite Day warstories (there was another really good one by blatrueka, and one by Juice, as well.)

I'm surprised that you managed to beat another team,I mean winning with NFE mon is a bit hard but you make it look easy. You still need to improve in your battling, but that doesn't mean that I'm saying you suck,I am looking foward to your future warstories if you ever make any more so I can see your progress.

Not bad...not bad.
Commentary is lacking. It wouldnt hurt to add a little humor between comments, but format and battle was good. Also, dat spongebob pic was cool.
