The Everything NHL Thread

Couldn't be happier with that hiring. It's tough to make an argument he's a bad coach because his record is silly (fastest ever to 200 wins, I believe) in the regular season, but I think it's just as hard to argue that he's a good one with the significant problems his teams had in Washington both in a general sense with scheme and player motivation and specifically him seeming to get outcoached in every playoff series he's ever been in by actual good coaches like Bylsma, Boucher, and Tortorella. The resurgence Washington had in his first year as head coach was pretty impressive, but given how weak the Southeast was for most of his tenure it kind of cheapens the record to me. And I don't think I need to revisit how bad he looked on 24/7.

As a fan who primarily roots for Washington and Detroit there's something beautiful about this, though. While I think most people would say Detroit's main rivals are San Jose and Chicago(or maybe even Pittsburgh), I think those three teams all respect each other even if their fanbases don't because they play similar styles and have a lot of talented, clean players. The more heated rivalry for Detroit is definitely Anaheim(you don't see Datsyuk fighting Patrick Kane, do you?), so as someone who's largely blamed Boudreau(also Mike Green.) for Washington's playoff failings there's something amazingly delightful about him taking the helm of my most hated team. I'd like to say I'll be rooting for him after he helped revive the franchise... but I'd be lying.

I'd guess that almost every coach of a bottom-half team was a little scared once Boudreau become an option.

Stu Hackel interviewed Scotty Bowman about the firings, and his insight on the Caps is pretty damned keen. As in, why didn't I ever think of that?

“I don’t know how good that team is,” he says of the Capitals, wondering if they might have been long overrated. “They’re always in a weak division. They’re always with teams that have no money or don’t spend to the salary cap. They get in the playoffs and their competition is tougher.

“I think what happened with Boudreau, he replaced Glen Hanlon, and they weren’t playing for him,” he continues. ”They bought in Boudreau, some guy from the minors, and they started to win by playing all-out offense. They didn’t play any defense. Then they started to lose in the playoffs and he tried to change,” alluding to Boudreau trying to get his players to become more defensively responsible after having some regular season success playing another way. “I don’t think you can change. It’s too bad for Boudreau, but he bounced back right away.”

So many fantasy-relevant injuries lately.

Kari Lehtonen
Chris Pronger
Mike Richards
Demitry Kulikov
Sami Salo
Kris Virsteeg (he's back)

I mean those are just from my team so maybe I missed others.

Also what do you guys think of the jets fans so far? I think we are getting excessive by just booing the whole Phoenix team but at least we gave Doan a standing ovation. I've heard people say "worse than habs fans"...I hope not.

I was at the Sens game and it's not THAT bad. Yes, we were chanting "Anderson" a lot when the puck was in the offensive zone. Yes, we booed at bad penalties/goals. I even saw a guy spit on the person beside him because the guy wasn't wearing a jersey. But when there was an injured Ottawa player we cheered when he got up, we cheered after the game when we lost, and from what I saw none of the Ottawa fans were harassed.

Of course this is a biased perspective, but we seem pretty standard. We're happy that our team is back and very dedicated to them, but we're not going to riot/act like animals over it.

Gomez scoring haha.

Also, another run at Miller, this time by Tootoo. I felt that Tootoo could have at least attempted to stop, even though it may have been that Ehrhoff gave him that extra momentum. Trying to jump over the goaltender was just stupid though.

what the fuck were they supposed to do, let it go

they already tried that last time, didn't go over so well

and go fuck yourself pope, that was a bullshit move by Tootoo no matter who called it

Going after Tootoo: absolutely fine. Defend your players, especially your goalie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc0tQGwTHH4

At 1:52 Tootoo has full control of the puck and his skates are clearly going towards the front of the goal trying to make a play.

At about 1:54 Ehrhoff makes contact with Tootoo.

1:56 is when Tootoo makes contact with Miller with his hands above his head and his hip/stomach making contact with Miller.

I'm not a Tootoo supporter either. It seems as soon as he got in the NHL he started being dirty just to keep his job. But this was over the top just because it happened to Miller. Lucic hit was a lot worse.

Are you addressing me? Kind of confused.

I enjoyed it when Gaustad was talking smack to Lindback when being escorted to the bench. Made me smile a bit.

Also, this brawl makes the KHL's brawls look like child's play

do you even watch hockey? that same move happens many times every game (skating around a defender on the outside, coming towards the net and basically that exact angle). Generally you skate back in front of the net and you have a point black shot, but Ehrhoff is a fucking moron who decided to shove a guy who had no way of stopping himself at that point right into his goaltender.

Those announcers were jokes. Even halfway through the video they realize "oh shit we're idiots, he was actually pushed right into Miller" but they're not going to admit that.

No, it was directed at Kish, I couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic or not.

do you even watch hockey?

Nope, I hate the sport.

You're going to blame our defenseman for Tootoo blatantly running Miller? You've got to be kidding. These are professional ice skaters who have played hockey their entire lives and can stop on a dime, you'd have to be fucking retard to think Tootoo didn't mean to do what he did.

Watch the replay again, and pay attention to it in slow motion. Tootoo is staring down at the puck on his stick when Ehrhoff pokes in and pushes it out of his possession. From that point on, he lifts his head and continues directly on his path to Miller, and then JUMPS INTO THE FUCKING GOALIE. I don't care if guys have tried to jump over goalies in the past and done it, he DIDN'T. He failed miserably. He ran the goalie and deserves every penalty minute he got, and will deserve any suspension he (hopefully, who knows knowing Shanny) gets.

Oh really? Now you're inside their heads? And of course they're fucking homers, they work for the Sabres. What the fuck do you expect them to say, even if Tootoo was in the right? I'm sure the Nashville announcing team took Tootoo's side in all this, so what's your fucking point?

I don't even know why I bother to argue hockey with you. You're a troll of the worst kind.

hmmmm, it seems I might be talking to someone with a slight bias on this issue

literally have not seen one person who isn't a sabres fan side with miller, but by all means keep calling me a troll and wear your blinders. buffalo, NY: we homer hard

edit:

yeah it would be great for him to have stopped on a dime in half a second right after he got shoved going full speed to the net at a weird angle and off-balanced, are you fucking joking me or what
