Glaceon Discussion

2 things convinced me to make this: a) the last one was made in november and b) i have a lv 7 glaceon and i need to decide what to do with it.

Type: Ice
Ability: Snow Cloak (raises evasion in Hailstorms)
65 HP / 60 Atk / 110 Def / 130 SAtk / 95 SDef / 65 Speed

Notable Physical Movepool:

Ice Shard
Ice Fang
Last Resort
Covet

Notable Special Movepool:

Blizzard
Mirror Coat
Water Pulse
Ice Beam
Hidden Power
Shadow Ball

Notable Support Movepool:

Hail
Roar
Toxic
Protect
Captivate
Charm
Curse
Tickle
Wish
Yawn
Fake Tears

Well, one thing is for sure, this guy has a VERY limited movepool, which in fact, is not necessarily THAT helpful.

From its Previous Evolution you can get the following (possibly) notable moves:

Baton Pass
Trump Card

So Glaceon is not necessarily bad; it has fairly good defenses (except HP) and it has great SAtk. What do you do with a Pokemon like this?

Glaceon @ Leftovers
-Protect
-Wish
-Shadow Ball
-Ice Beam / Blizzard

This is, in my opinion, a good set for it since it helps it live longer and it can take some advantage of its special attack. Obviously, only use Blizzard if you have an Abomasnow on your team, but for PP issues, you may want to stick with Ice Beam anyway.

Why does Game Freak try to make every Ice type a wall? It's great that Glaceon has the strongest Ice attacks in the game, but its terrible Speed ruins its potential, and it can't even stall with its nice defenses due to its mediocre HP and horrible defensive typing.

Heh, novelty:

Glaceon @ Leftovers
Trait: Snow Cloak
EV's: 124 HP, 128 Def, 252 SDef
Bold Nature
- Double Team
- Hail
- Wish
- Baton Pass

Super novelty and super cheap, but meh it could be really fun on a BP Chain team. Hail for the +1 evasion, it has pretty neat defenses so it may survive a hit or two, then Double Team away. Wish for health, and Baton Pass to your sweeper when ready.

Hail isn't worth it, especially if you already have Double Team. You'll still need an attack even if it's a Baton Passer anyway.

I'd use Toxic or something

and also there are random moves around here that could work, like say Sand Attack, or Icy Wind, or Mirror Coat.

Glaceon @ leftovers
calm, snow cloak
252 hp / 120 def / 100 spdef / 56 spa
Ice Beam
Shadow Ball / HP electric
wish
protect

This could work, I guess. Its a less defensive and more offensive version of vaporeon. Honestly, i'd rather use vaporeon, but those attacking options are really nice. Ghost/Ice is a good combination on its own, but HP electric is better on competitor, or if you're crazy and want to devote a thousand years to breeding. HP ground could work if your team fears fire.

I'd think it's better of as the main hitter in a Hail team (In which case it will damage anything not named Blissey badly) rather as anything else. Not only its HP is a letdown, so is its speed. This disables him from really switching in on special Mences n stuff - bad stuff.

Wait, doesn't this thing get Subsitute?

It could run a FakeTears/IceBeam/Subsitute/hp[voltage] set.

If I were to use Glaceon, I would abuse the fact that it has the strongest Ice attack in the game - rather reminiscent of RBY Articuno, but now with the option of Choice Specs to boost it even further.

Glaceon@Choice Specs - Modest, max special attack, max speed
Blizzard
Ice Beam
Shadow Ball
HP Fighting

Blizzard/Ice Beam because Glaceon's movepool is trash. The idea is simple - get in on something slower, then attack away. Blizzard can OHKO a 341/236 Tyranitar about 50% of the time even with Blizzard's terrible accuracy, so it has a lot of potency. It even does a number on resistors, 2HKOing things like Metagross. Obviously Blissey is an issue, but that goes without saying.

Maybe adjust the EV spread on that Specs set so it's more defensive, since Glaceon's speed is crap and it won't be missing it. Unless of course it's meant to outspeed something and I'm missing it due to a brain puke. o_o

Speaking of outspeeding stuff, it seems that Glaceon with Scarf (max EVs, +Spd) can outspeed Base 120's with +Spd natures and max EVs so...hello there Sceptile.

What I am about to type is nothing new, but should be posted in a Glaceon thread because it's not here yet.

Glaceon @ AScarf
Timid Nature
Max SAtk, Spd (or take some away from SAtk and maybe 8 EVs and invest them into HP)
-Ice Beam
-Hidden Power [Grass/Electric]
-Water Pulse
-Shadow Ball

Yeah, I know, Water Pulse...sucks...meant for Houndoom at least...eh...I tried not to repeat Misty's set too much; HP Grass is for Pert/Bro and HP Electric is for Gyara. Shadow Ball can take care of Starmie, which you outspeed effortlessly, and we all know what Ice Beam does.

Not sure how frail it is, but it's probably quite frail...might not have enough oomph...

Of course, Misty's set will work fine for Adherence Scarf too, so with that you can beat Adamant Weavile switch-ins (not likely but it could happen) and pretty much OHKO Tyranitar.

glaceon @ leftovers/focus sash
bold 252 hp 252 def 4 sp.atk
agility
wish
Bpass
ice beam

like this set, can get a agility/wish off against a physical sweeper then Bpass. ice beam just for STAB and dragon killer. I guess focus sash could work on this just so CSmence and other special sweepers dont kill it.

Glaceon does not learn Agility, and it shouldn't ever be Impish, what with its Special Attack being so high.

How about:

Glaceon @ Metronome
Calm
252 DEF/252 Speed/ 6 HP
Ice Beam
Shadow Ball
Hail
Swagger/Roar/Protect

With this moveset you're probably going to be using Ice Beam or Shadow Ball consecutively so metronome will give you a boost for 1 of those moves. Hail obviously activates Snow cloak. Even though Swagger sharply raises foes attack Glaceon's base defense is 110 which is it's 2nd best Base stat and EV's to it make it's defense very good. Roar and Protect have their obvious uses.

This is a fairly old thread, but I wanted to point out that Hail on Glaceon would not be entirely bad due to the fact that it: gives Glaceon +1 evasion, and hurts the foe every turn, as well as stopping the annoying sandstorm/other weather.

Misty+, as Bliksem said, full speed would really not be good since Tyranitar's Sand Stream now gives it more Special Defense.

Blizzard is nowhere near an OHKO on T-tar once you factor in the Sandstream sp def boost. The only way to get that out of the equation is to Hail, in which case either you can't use a choice item on Glaceon or you need someone else to set it up for you whilst T-tar stays in.. not exactly likely.
