CAP 13 CAP 2 - Part 8 - Name Submissions

Status
Not open for further replies.
Now comes the point where we stop calling CAP 2 "CAP 2" and start trying to call it something else. Here we will develop names which will hopefully include some pretty awesome stuff. This process will end with my selecting a slate from the submissions. Keep in mind that this isn't total bedlam; just posting a name doesn't mean anything. You need to follow the rules as outlined below.

  • Names must be marked as "Final Submission" to have a chance to be slated for polling.
  • One final submission per person.
  • The length limit for a Pokemon's name is 10 characters.
  • Do not post just to say that you like a name. Substantiate your post or it will be deleted and you warned.
The following rules are not 'rules' as per the CAP process, but rules insofar as anything breaking them will be automatically disqualified for slate. That means you should follow them if you want a chance to make slate.

  • No name may contain profanity or be otherwise inappropriately suggestive.
  • No name may be too similar to the name of another Pokemon.
I reserve the right as TL to interpret those rules as I deem fit. This means that if I think your name is too close to something, it is, regardless of what anyone else thinks. If you think your name might break one of those rules, it is highly likely that it is.

Remember that as a flavor aspect of the CAP process, anyone, including the TL and ATL, may participate.

This thread will be open for roughly 24 hours.

CAP 2 thus far:

Concept: Sketch Artist

Description: A Pokemon that learns Sketch, once, and everything that goes along with that.

Justification:

In terms of uniqueness, I think that few existing Pokemon can match DPP Smeargle, an otherwise laughably worthless Pokemon trolling OU with access to every trick in the book (or at least 4 of them) but also affecting the metagame greatly by becoming a top threat in the lead metagame. This Pokemon will borrow some of that uniqueness by learning the move Sketch and thus having access to ONE surprise/strategic/gutshot bonus move to supplement its pre-existing movepool. Being otherwise competently built (read: usable stats), this Poke could be a top threat or specialist for reasons we can't even predict yet.

Questions To Be Answered:

  • How will a Poke that has access to any one move out of all the moves in the game affect common battling tactics, namely prediction, scouting, and switching?
  • Which Sketch moves will become most common on this Poke's best sets? Does Sketchmon's success rely on hiding that secret Sketch move until just the right moment or can it succeed with predictably powerful moves like Spore, Spikes, Hurricane, Shell Smash, etc.?
  • Does this unique and powerful access to moves need to be counterbalanced elsewhere in the Pokemon's design? If so, then to what degree?
  • What kind of impact can Sketchmon have on teambuilding in terms of being able to patch holes with common utility moves like Rapid Spin or Toxic Spikes?
Explanation: The key here is that we have a lot of freedom to construct a unique Pokemon while staying within the confines of the concept. Typing, stats, abilities, and even most of the movepool are completely fair game so long as the Poke learns Sketch only once along the way and that we keep that in mind during previous steps. Now, this doesn't mean the CAP process will be directionless; Rising Dusk is pretty well organized and good at keeping discussions focused, and the concept itself has firm grounding in Smeargle's precedent. What's really being studied with this concept is movepool diversity and effectiveness, so it should have the most effect on the movepool process, where movepool creators will have to carefully balance their Sketchmon's actual movepool with the possibility of adding any one other move to the list. In terms of the metagame, there is no doubt in my mind that throwing a wildcard like this into the mix will strongly affect the metagame.
Focus: Bulky Offense
Typing: Grass / Ghost
Stats: 64 HP / 120 Atk / 100 Def / 85 SpA / 120 SpD / 81 Spe
Abilities: Forewarn / Telepathy (DW)
Primary Checks: Heatran, Jirachi, Skarmory, Hydreigon

tl;dr: Quack! (Names are identities!)

Gonna sneak in the name I've been cooking up for a bit.

Final Submission:

Auwreith

Aura, Wreath, Wraith

Pretty basic. Our CAP can channel spirits and is itself not among the living. Wraiths are a fairly standard undead enemy in most fantasy settings, and known in LotR for their flowing garments. Wreath is woven in more explicitly, and wreathes are often laid at the graves of the fallen to indicate respect.

If you also notice, the letters for "write" are also mixed in there, but sadly it doesn't form a true anagram. Hua write! As far as pronunciation, both Aur-"wraith" and Aur-"wreath" are acceptable.

Got two ideas:

Mystress
: A blend of 'mystery', some sort of ethereal adjective, and 'mistress', referring primarily to the CAP who wants to dedicate herself with one individual. This name idea looks a bit like an intentional misspelling, but some Pokemon names follow that naming convention (e.g., Krabby, Bayleef, Throh).

Shadame: 'Shadow' and 'madame' (or dame); same base ideas, different word portmanteau. Originally, I had Shadam as the name, but it looked too much like a certain other name. Without knowing the origin, the name looks like it could be pronounced 'Shah-dah-meh' or 'Shah-daym'.

Which one I decide on will depend on how the community responds.

I've actually had an 'in-progress' name that I was using a lot on IRC to talk about the CAP, and so I figure I'll at least put it on paper here to see what everyone else in CAP thinks.

My name is Shamantra
Etymology: Shaman + Mantra
Pronunciation: shuh-mahn-traw
sha·man
noun
(especially among certain tribal peoples) a person who acts as intermediary between the natural and supernatural worlds, using magic to cure illness, foretell the future, control spiritual forces, etc.
man·tra
noun
a word or formula, as from the Veda, chanted or sung as an incantation or prayer.
I felt it epitomized the shrine maiden rituals through the shaman sounds while keeping the aura of telepathy alive in the name with mantra. It also sounds female, which is a pretty decent plan since CAP 2 will end up only as a female.

I'll only consider slating my own name if it receives a lot of community support, since I don't want to pass judgment on my own flavor work for the CAP. Good luck to everyone else!

Final Submission

Oradite
(Oar-a-die-tea)

Oracle + Aphrodite

Oracles were fortune tellers and channels for the gods in Ancient Greece and I believe to be along the same lines as say, a Shaman (mystical connections). Aphrodite, the Roman equivalent of Venus plays into the pokemon looking both female and Venus Fly Trap based.

Okay let's try this again.

Thornella

For some reason I thought "Cinderella", and there you have it. I hastily deleted a post prior to this, but I'm just going to say that I've looked at human names for a while and I don't think there's going to be another name-based portmanteau that actually sounds decent (other than Shamantra from earlier). (And I checked existing names for similarities this time!)

Other than that, I think Mystress hits the target really well. It's a one-letter corruption and a portmanteau in one, like Tomohawk but a lot less awkward off the bat.

Final Submission: Revenaea-It's a combination of revenant, and the scientific name of the venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula. Seems fitting, and has a slightly feminine sound to it.

capefeather: Not to be a sour grape, but that name's already taken! Not coincidentally, it's used for a plant lady miniboss-ish monster. Source material in question is Dragon Quest Monsters Joker II.

My personal name for her since the beginning was Nanamorpha; you can tell from all of the filenames I've been using for pictures of her and the supporting art, too. It came from Nanami + Amorpha; Nanami because she was the 7th design I decided to settle down with and Amorpha after my existing Grass/Ghost Fakemon. It's an unwordly mouthful though, so I think I'll go with Nanamilia instead. (Nanami + Muscipular / Distortion of 'Familiar' or 'Carmelia')

Final Submission: Nanamilia

Final Submission:

Onmylawn Divinaea

Etymology: Divinate + Dionaea muscipula.

Divination is usually associated with psychic abilities, but divination is usually about forseeing the future events, and can be done in various ways (look up all the -mancy abilities, yes even including necromancy), but as its is build from the latin word 'divinare - to forsee, to be inspired by a god' (thanks, Wikipedia!) and the mystic nature of this Pokemon seemed appropriate. There's also the famous form of divination, necromancy, which is associated with spirits; just a fun little fact.

Dionaea muscipula is the scientific name of venus flytraps (again, thanks Wikipedia!), any this 'mon is inspired by a venus flytrap. Enough said?

I feel that Divinate and Dionaea fit well together as a false word. The 'aea' suffix also has a feminine tone to it, which we all know the CAP is almost certainly female. Then again, there is Gardevoir but that's another story ...

Original Ideas:

Blossomen pretty simple. blossom and omen. Problem: Belossom already exists.

Deja Venus Deja Vu works perfectly with Anticipation ability and Venus is obvious. Problem: Aside from Mr. Mime and Mime. Jr all Pokemon have one-word names

The ones I am leaning towards:

Sylphia It's got sylph - a female spirit, the -ia ending suggets the female name Sylvia and adds a more feminine touch in general. And also some hint of cilia - the little hair things on a venus flytrap.

Scrytrap Obvious Flytrap indications and (from wikipedia,) "Scrying ... is a magic practice that involves seeing things psychically in a medium, usually for purposes of obtaining spiritual visions ... Scrying has been used in many cultures as a means of divining the past, present, or future. Depending on the culture and practice, the visions that come when one stares into the media are thought to come from God, spirits, the psychic mind, the devil, or the subconscious."

Final Submission:

Thoraskee

Thor is from the word Thorn. I tried to add telepathy to the name and ended up with "Thorasee", I added a K after the s to make it sound more like sketch and make it sound better. ;3
(I have "thor" in the beginning so it sounds less like ferrothorn.

Shrinox

Shrine+Latin prefix for night.

Simple, references her origins as a shrine maiden mon, and rolls off the tongue. As for the flytrap aspects, keep in mind we already have a blatant flytrap mon (Carnivine). This thing's flavor errs more towards its Ghost-type than its Grass-type.

Final Submission:

Venushryne

Venus + Shrine, with a y to vaguely play on the word "shy". I thought of this one after the art concept was decided and I thought it fit nicely, Venus can apply both to the plant and the feminin appearance of the art concept, while shrine applies CaP 2s role. Any thoughts?

Final Submission:

Maidine

Either Maiden + Vine or Maiden + Dine, either way it emphasizes her flytrap aspects as well as her being a shrine maiden.

Fantomente

Etomology: fantôme + augmenté
Pronunciation: Fan-tome-aunt

fantôme: French word for Phantom
augmenté: French word for Rose

This name combines both the Ghost and Grass aspects of CAP II. As for the french, French is considered to be a language of elegance and class (despite what it may appear from some people). I feel as though this name gives a feminine sense to CAP II, and defines some sort of beauty and finesse while capturing the aspects of its design.

Hopefully that made some sort of sense.

Final Submission:

Shamula

"Shaman" + "Muscipula"

According to wikipedia:

Shamanism encompasses the belief that shamans are intermediaries or messengers between the human world and the spirit worlds. Shamans are said to treat ailments/illness by mending the soul. Alleviating traumas affecting the soul/spirit restores the physical body of the individual to balance and wholeness. The shaman also enters supernatural realms or dimensions to obtain solutions to problems afflicting the community.
Muscipula comes from the scientific name for the venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula.

Ravenus

Venus (as in the fly trap) + Ravenous.

or

Predauteur

Predator + auteur (French for author, adapted to refer to a filmmaker using film to express a personal vision... just an artistic term)

Anyone like either of these?

Possible name...

Mikinuo - (Previously emboldened)

This combines the words of Miko, Shinto, and suo into this one word. However, as much as I enjoy reading about Japanese culture on Wikipedia, I suppose that this name is to be Americanized, as would have been done to a majority of other existing Pokemon.

Thus, I also offer this possible name...

Shintra - (Previously emboldened)

The above combines "Shinto"/"shrine" with the first three letters of the word "trap". Since we Americans are in constant need of verbal hints to figure out the inspiration behind the Pokemon we love, I came up with this one in about a minute I tried to emphasize the most integral parts of the design, keeping true as well to both of its types.

[EDIT] Actually, in that case, these are my final submissions.

What I mean by "these" is this; the first one is a Japenese name, completely irrelevant to battlers, but entertaining to those who desire a bit more flavour. If this is not possible, then by all means discard the non-emboldened name below and only consider the emboldened name.

Final Submission

Shintra

Justification is above.

If allowed, Japenese Name - Mikinuo

Guess I'll throw my hat in the ring

Final Submission

Irisyke

aight so some background on this name.

I chose the Iris since it's a pretty flower name, and the "I" sound brings out the eye features in the design.

Supposedly the last half of the name comes from the name of a hamadryad in Greek mythology.

But the thing that I really like about the name is that it's highly reminiscent of the popular "psych!" which is slang for faking someone out, which is what the design is really shooting for in the whole luring in/venus flytrapness.
