Seconding this. I was testing Bulk Up Scraggy, and switched it into someone's Ampharos. I nearly fell over when it Focus Blasted poor Scraggy for 74%!!

Left a really strong impression on me.

Ampharos is actually quite bulky. 90 / 75 / 90 with Static is great, and base 115 Special Attack ... It's kinda like Eelektross without Levitate.
 
Wait wtf for some reason I thought Ampharos got Lightningrod... :(

I prefer Raichu over Ampharos simply because I prefer more offense oriented mons, but Ampharos's bulk is pretty impressive, especially as it gets moves like Heal Bell that can support the team.
 
if your using magnet rise ampharos why dont you just use rotom-f... I mean it may be stealth rock weak but it has levitate and higher stats across the board except for 10 lower special attack. Ampharos has a couple of unique niches (heal bell, light screen, specs which helps pronouce the increased power) and if your using up a turn to gain what rotom has just by switching in that just seems a bit wasteful
 
Yeah, slow Magnet Rise doesn't really sound that appealing when there's Rotom formes and Eelektross around. Eelektross is pretty bulky, too, especially with investment. One of the biggest things that might draw me to using offensive Ampharos is Agility. It's bulky enough to set up Agility, it hits very hard -- and the kicker? Electric and Flying types are the most common scarfers around, and they really can't do much to you.
 
So! Encore Raichu is like my new favorite Pokemon right now. A fast Encore is really really effective especially with stuff like Thunder Wave being thrown around all the time. It's been super good and I haven't had any regrets adding it to my team (like I did with like five other Pokemon including Specs Regice and Floatzel). I've also been seeing some really interesting stuff on the ladder, like a physically defensive Harvest + Sitrus Berry Exeggutor, with Sub, Protect, and Leech Seed. It was honestly insanely hard to beat, especially if it had Toxic Spikes support.
 
That was Oglemi's Eggy :< I am seriously fucking scared now. Encore will definitely come in handy against it though. I've also used encore Raichu before and I enjoyed screwing over rotom-s, especially the scarf variants since they trick you the scarf and you encore them into trick. It pretty much shuts down rotom for you while also allowing you to switch freely since they're probably going to do it, too.

More info on Oglemi's exeggutor, you have to taunt it. You have to or it's going to troll you hard. Another great way to deal with it is with a insomnia mon (or anything that can play off status, like resttalkers). It seriously is a bitch to face, especially being as you don't know exactly what Eggy will do when you encounter one... God forbid it's Specs Eggy.

WTF! I'm looking through Raichu's movepool, and it learns FLY. o_O

With all the status being thrown around, has anyone tried using Substitute on setup sweepers? I'm thinking stuff like that SubQuiver Volcarona set that was popular in OU a while ago.

SubSmash Gorebyss, for example. Give it Leftovers, pick a coverage move (probably HP Grass) and go.

Or how about something crazy like Substitute + Flame Charge Magmortar? Give it Leftovers, team support to patch up the coverage lost ect. It's not fast enough to beat most Scarfers, but it does force switches and attract status, so stacking multiple Charges might be possible. Modest Magmortar can outspeed Swellow at +1, and if you get rid of stuff like Camerupt and Quagsire beforehand it could pull off a lategame sweep.
 
Even Pikachu got Fly, and I think even Surf as well?? It was a joke event a while back. XD

Substitute is REALLY GOOD ON SET UP SWEEPERS oh my god. Not only status as you mentioned, but with all these annoying mons with Sucker Punch you have a very good chance of staying alive. Since defensive teams rely on paralyzing stuff and offensive teams rely on Absol to bail them out of bad situations, Substitute is just epically awesome.

Raichu only gets Fly by merits of event Pikachu.

SubSmash Gorebyss isn't really that new, but it is pretty good. It's got major coverage issues, though, as you either get walled by Water-types or Grass-types. Best used on a Rain team, or just BPing it a Sub.

As for Magmortar, beyond Swellow and Absol, I don't see it doing too much. Giving up two coverage moves is killler for Magmortar, especially with a SR weakness and that it needs LO to maximise its attacking prowess. Agility or Nasty Plot BPing would be better.

That Eggy might have a decent counter in Kadabra. Magic Guard for Leech Seed, Taunt, Encore, Sub ... Whack an extra move on him, and he'd do pretty well IMO. Shadow Ball for the super effective hit ...
 
I'd rather use signal beam to be frank. It hits all the psychics hard like Shadow Ball, hits dark-types hard like Absol and Skuntank (Focus Blast), It also hits Grass-types like Tangela and Maractus hard, too. Without having to rely on switching moves like Shadow Ball / Focus Blast coverage... the 5 BP lost against Shadow Ball won't make much of a difference while mashing so much super effectively, while the power loss between focus blast is made up for by the fact THAT IT DOESN'T MISS.
 
Are you serious? Well screw my idea then, Kadabra is going to have problems with Pursuiters, especially being as it has to rely on a two move coverage...
 
Trying to run a sun team and I've found that torkoal ruins my day each battle I see it. I love running combusken and spamming flare blitzes left and right when I can and Exeggutor is awesome with leaf storm. Anyone have any suggestions on how to dispatch the red turtle quickly?
 
SR is a huge start- Torkoal takes 25% from it and has no recovery outside Rest. Toxic Spikes would help too, but that's harder to fit into a sun team.

Golem 2HKOs it with EQ too, which is a plus. Torkoal is so slow that Gigalith of all things outspeeds it, so it's not too hard to smack it a good one.
 
Honestly, if you're having Torkoal troubles when using Combusken, why not just use a special attacking variant? Sub / Protect / Focus Blast / Fire Blast does a load to pretty much everything that isn't named Altaria, which is what you would use something like Weezing for. And yeah, if you want SD Combusken I would use SR and probably some Fire-type attacker which can actually dent it, like LO Magmortar, which can beat it up beforehand, allowing Combusken to get through the opponent's team *that* much easier
 
Yea, I've seen Combusken in action, and the Special variant is far more dangerous than the physical variant. Been nearly swept a few times =_=
 
Special is that good huh? Not sure about relying on 2 meh accuracy moves to sweep and honestly, a sweep from a Special Combusken sounds kinda shaky. I'll give it whirl since I don't like judging a book just from its covers.
 
Speaking of fire starters, I was thinking of using a NP Monferno. I was playing in OU for once and saw a few NP infernapes and was wondering how monfernfo would function in the lower tiers.

Something like this-

Monferno (M) @ Life Orb/Eviolite
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Nasty Plot
- Grass Knot
- Close Combat
- Fire Blast

CC can be replaced by Vacuum Wave (also change the nature to modest in that case.)
 
From my experience and others Monferno has been disappointing. It doesn't have bulk and its attack won't net any real KO's even with boosts. I would recommend using Magmortar or Combusken over Monferno any day of the week, as they both do the job better.
 
Also, Cheapoman, for reference - Combusken literally 2HKOes every Pokemon in NU with the proper support. Fire Blast 2HKOes pretty much everything that takes neutral damage to it, and I bet Altaria is 2HKOed in the sun after rocks tbh. Focus Blast takes care of everything else - for comparison, you 2HKO Specially Defensive Alomomola, every time all the time. Literally the only Pokemon you can't consistently OHKO or 2HKO is Altaria, which isn't that common tbh. I bet offensive variants are 2HKOed after rocks though!

Okay why not using Simisear or even Combusken instead, if you really want Monferno try something like this(still not that great though):

Jolly Nature (+Spe, -SAtk)
- Fire Blast
- U-Turn
- Close Combat
- Mach Punch

CC for reliable STAB and "damaging" something weak to it.
Mach Punch +Iron Fist give it decent priority to make it different from the other Fire-types on the tier, it also works to evade Absol's Sucker Punch,if Absol has taken a bit of prior damage revenge it.
U-Turn is a a great move to get out of there when you know it can't do something/predict something will come to take it on.
Fire Blast is mostly because it kills Tangela and Vileplume after Rocks and a move that is not U-Turn, also because it has no many real options.
