Rangers vs. Senators

Because people who don't pick any upsets are pussies. Admittedly more likely the Bruins win their series, but coming off a cup and a bunch of regular season games that didn't matter vs. a team that's finally recovering and had a roster a lot of us expected to contend for the cup is dangerous. Flyers/Pens will be amazing, shame it happened round 1. Look for home ice to be totally irrelevant in every game of the Panthers/Devils series, since neither of them have any fans.

Rangers vs. Capitals
Penguins vs. Devils

Atlantic rivalry series would be fun (but not as fun as Rangers/Devils in the more probable Bruins>Caps scenario), Rangers/Caps rematch of last two Rangers eliminations would be fun. If these games occur should be fairly easy for Rangers and Pens; Bruins/Pens, on the other hand, would be a bit more exciting, though I'd predict the same ECF this gets.

West

Canucks vs. Kings
Blues vs. Sharks
Coyotes vs. Blackhawks
Predators vs. Red Wings

Many of same factors here as the Eastern 2/7 game, but I might just be being hopeful on this one: I really don't want more series with the least interesting team in hockey. Also like in the East, the 3/6 game features a weak division winner against the third highest finishing team in a much stronger division: I'd have predicted whichever of Nashville, Detroit, and Chicago got this slot(how stupid were the Red Wings for tying that game yesterday?). Predators should mop up the Wings: they're the better team this year to begin with and without home ice to abuse how ridiculous the Wings have been at the Joe this year I wouldn't be surprised if they lost in 5.

Canucks vs. Sharks
Predators vs. Blackhawks

The latter series would be a lot of fun(though again, likely we'll get Canucks/Hawks and Blues/Preds instead), much like the series between those two teams was the year the Hawks won the cup, but the Preds have come a long way since then and Radulov would be an important, series flipping x-factors as the Preds finally gain the ability to do something between bouts of turtling. Sharks have a lot to prove if they get this rematch with the Canucks, but will likely get stomped again.

I've got to be the first to post homer picks so I better post this before jrrrr gets here

EAST

Rangers vs Senators
Bruins vs Capitals
Panthers vs Devils
Penguins vs Flyers

The sens and caps look like sexy upset picks but I'm going with both the rags and bruins here. The panthers and devils series will probably be the most interesting series that no one bothers to watch. Pens and flyers should be great, I'm looking forward to wednesday. The upsets will have to wait for round 2...

Rangers vs Devils
Bruins vs Penguins

Fuck the rags I hope we play them round 2 and beat them. Our season series was very even this year and I think being the underdog vs them this year in the playoffs will help us win.

Penguins vs Devils

Well this pick is pure homer lol. I expect the pens to beat us here if we actually end up playing, although we have totally had the pens number the past few years (especially brodeur) so maybe we can win!

WEST

Canucks vs Kings
Blues vs Sharks
Coyotes vs Blackhawks
Predators vs Red Wings

Only upset pick here is the coyotes. I'm really surprised at how many people are taking chicago here. I think their special teams will really let them down here and smith will be a beast. I was tempted to pick the sharks because they have the playoff experience and finished the season strong while the blues struggled, but the sharks have yet to prove they can handle the blues this year.

Canucks vs Predators
Blues vs Coyotes

Canucks and preds should be a really good series if they play. Mike smith's run will end and then carl will trade him back to me next year.

Canucks vs Blues

I have a soft spot for teams with langs, arnott, and the trap, but I think the canucks will win.

Stanley Cup

Canucks vs Devils

Even the homer in me can't pick the devils here. Whether the canucks face the penguins, devils, bruins, rangers, or whoever here I think this is their year.

East

New York Rangers vs Ottawa Senators in 6
Boston Bruins vs Washington Capitals in 5
Florida Panthers vs. New Jersey Devils in 7
Pittsburgh Penguins vs Philadelphia Flyers in 7

Why? Because I can. :) Also, Sens match up nicely with the Rangers, I think Torts will have a couple of hissy fits as his team the Rangers loses in 6. Ovie is so hot right now (yum) and his Caps are just starting to look like the team they should have been all season, plus they are the underdog/nothing to lose here and want to make a point against the Broons. Turco might steal a game but Thomas is still haunted by OBAMA and will have a break down on the ice where he trips not once but twice causing an upper body injury or something. Flo rida is the biggest underdog (undercat?) in the East but don't underestimate them. I predict Theodore will get hot and while the Devs have a couple of nice forwards, they won't have the offense to get by these rats. I predict it to go to 7 games though, it will be closer than people think. Cindy and Evelyn might get the refs to steal a couple of games for them in the Pens/Flyers series, but I'm really predicting it to go to 7 because it'll be an epic matchup and come on; how can this one NOT go to 7 games? Predicting Laviolette to jizz in his pants as his team moves on and defeats his mighty rivals, much like AV with the Nucks last year vs the Shithawks.

Flo Rida Cats vs Ottawa "In your face Leafs" Senators in 6
Philadelphia Universes vs Washington Soviet Russias in 4

Rat attack! Rawr. Well, this is a much more interesting matchup then Bruins/Rangers/Crosbys (blech) right? Anyway, I don't think Ottawa is a super great team and will get deterred by the constant barrage of rat toys hitting the ice. They'll take a couple of games here but it won't be enough to defeat Versteeg and friends. Philly has a much stronger team than the Caps if they can get their stars back for this round. Philly has the offense needed to take down the Caps somewhat mediocre goal tending and Mr.Universe has been pretty solid lately.

Florida "fuck the haters" Panthers vs Philadelphia "fuck the Pens" Flyers in 6

Yeah, unfortunately for the rats their magical run ends here. Philly is riding high after sweeping the Caps last round and they end up victorious in hard fought battle.

THE MUCH BETTER WEST

Vancouver Canucks vs Los Angeles Kings in 6
St. Louis Blues vs San Jose Sharks in 5
Phoenix Coyotes vs Chicago Blackhawks in 4
Nashville Predators vs Detroit Red Wings in 6

I gotta go with my Canucks here but Quick will steal a couple of games. I don't think that Kings have the offense to get the job done while Vancouver has oodles of it. Should be a cool series though. St. Louis matches up well with the Sharks, as they have in the regular season. Sharks can't get by the goaltending and defense of the Blues and as such get eliminated pretty quickly. Yotes are praising whatever gods they believe in that they didn't get DETROIT this year and quickly stomp the Shithawks. Vince Vaughn won't even watch game 2 after he sees how badly game 1 went. Speaking of Detroit, they too get eliminated (Yotes once again thank Jesus) by Rinne and the Preds. It'll be a nice series with two very good teams which will come down to whichever goaltender is hotter since their offense is surprisingly even. Nashville has a fantastic defense and Rinne is probably better than Howard so they get my vote.

Vancouver 7uongos vs Nashville Carrie Underwoods in 6
St. Louis World Beaters vs Phoenix Hot Dogs in 7

Canucks once again play Preds in round 2, and just like last year Vancouver's favorite american gets hot at the right time (plus have you SEEN Kesler's abs?). On the other hand, we have possibly the most dull playoff series this season and Phoenix squeaks out of this one just barely.

Vancouver "Luuuuuuuuuuu" Canucks vs Phoenix "Will people start going to our games now?" Coyotes in 6

Unfortunately for Lu, he fucked up in the Nashville series and didn't get 4 straight shutouts. The city of Vancouver threatened to riot early unless Schneids was brought in, so in he came. He and the Canucks stomped down on the Coyotes. The three Yotes fans that showed up to watch were devastated.

FINALS

Vancouver "We're back" Canucks vs Philadelphia "Hartnell Down!" Flyers in 7

Both teams have made it to the final in recent years. Only one rioted however, so the NHL helps out the Canucks a little (just a little) by calling a penalty on the Flyers everytime the Canucks dive. Laviolette goes berserk and ends up getting suspended for the rest of the Finals. Flyers, not knowing what to do end up leaving the game and go to a Vancouver bar to meet some ladies (Canadian women, who can resist them) as the Canucks score like 1000 times and win the cup. Woohoo!

East

New York Rangers vs Ottawa Senators
Boston Bruins vs Washington Capitals
Florida Panthers vs. New Jersey Devils
Pittsburgh Penguins vs Philadelphia Flyers

Hardest series to pick for me was ironically the 1 vs. 8 seed...rangers look so good on paper and have lundqvist...sens had their number this year. Both aren't exactly on fire entering playoffs so it might literally just come down to which teams gets confidence early on. Caps and Bruins are both hot hot hot entering playoffs but I think Ovechkin finally has dat playoff swag and the caps will finally not choke. Devils winning against panthers is something i'm basically writing home to the books. Penguins just too damn good when healthy, the regular season series between the two teams be damned.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Ottawa Senators
Washington Capitals vs New Jersey Devils

Assuming I did this seeding right...Pens crush the overreaching hopefuls with a barrage of unfair skill...ovechkin finally makes his statement and tells the past 2 years of haters to fuck off.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals

sorry ovie...pens are just too damn beastly up and down. ovechkin tries his hardest but crosby / malkin / neal / staal / letang / fleury is just too much to overcome.

West

Vancouver Canucks vs Los Angeles Kings
St. Louis Blues vs San Jose Sharks
Phoenix Coyotes vs Chicago Blackhawks
Nashville Predators vs Detroit Red Wings

Lol each of the last 3 series could go either way, but I'm going with defense + G here. Kings arguably have better of that against Canucks but the Canucks are the Pens of the west...just too damn solid up and down the line up. Blues will outbore the sharks and just wait for the inevitable choking mistakes the sharks are famous for in playoffs. Coyotes will strangle the hawks and have fun peppering crawford or whoever plays goalie and god dammit doan deserves something. Last series is fun but I think nashville's late season additions are just enough to knock the wings out.

Vancouver Canucks vs Nashville Predators
St. Louis Blues vs Phoenix Coyotes

What? If I say Canucks are Pens of West why am I picking Nashville...dat D man, dat D. Getting Gill was brilliant and Radulov's shot just enough offensively to push Preds over Canucks. Blues vs. Coyotes will be a trap borefest but I think Hitchcock is the better coach and the Blues are better at being boring.

St. Louis Blues vs Nashville Predators

I'm drinkin' dat preds' kool aid.

Stanley Cup

Nashville Predators vs Pittsburgh Penguins

kool aid. didn't realize till now I have both 4th seeds getting to end...that's kinda fun :P

Aldaron clearly hates the sport of hockey =/ Also ala and Vineon have the greatest predictions.

East:

New York Rangers - Ottawa Senators 6
Boston Bruins - Washington Capitals 7
Florida Panthers - New Jersey Devils 6
Pittsburgh Penguins - Philadelphia Flyers 7

1) New York Rangers grind so hard every night, it's hard not to be impressed by them. Led by the offensive duos of Gaborik and Richards, with Callahan and Dubinsky bringing up the 2nd line, and boasting one of the league's most hard working d-corps and the sexiest man and elite goaltender Henrik "mancrush" Lundqvist, Rangers probably take this, shutting down Ottawa's top line. Only way Ottawa can take this is if their depth starts scoring regularly with Turris in the wings, because you can bet the bulk of the defensive players will be shadowing their top line.

2) Fuck Boston.

Seriously though, Holtby's getting hot at the right time, and Boston doesn't have Horton to score big goals. Boston still has depth though, and they still have Chara who could probably shut down Ovechkin pretty well. Brad "Noseface Killah" Marchand also can score and piss the fuck off the opposition also, making them take stupid penalties (while also taking several of his own, whichever is more will be determined). However, with the return of Backstrom, Washington has been playing well as of lately. If Carlson and Alzner bring up the rear, and if Alexander "the Invisible Man" Semin decides to show up, then Boston is in trouble.

Obama finally decides to visit the Verizon center in game 1, and Thomas exercises his right as a free citizen to leave the building.

3) This series I have the least amount of emotion vested in it. Parise and Kovalchuk are a great duo, and Kovalchuk doubles as a defenseman some nights, playing over 25 minutes a night, and is great at boot. The journeymen fall this round.

4) This series. Not sure if the Canucks hate the Hawks more than the Pens hate the Flyers and vice versa, especially after the last game. Flyers are missing Pronger, and I'm still iffy on their d-corps even if they did bring in Grossmann. Flyers have one of the best offensive forwards though, while Pittsburgh do boast two relatively unknown players in Crosby and Malkin. The wise words of astronomer, philosopher, and goalie Bryzgalov sum it up the best "Make sure we have enough ambulances." Could go either way, but picking the bloody tatters of the Penguins led by the decapitated head of Crosby to make it to the next round.

West:

Vancouver Canucks - LA Kings 5
St Louis Blues - San Jose Sharks 7
Phoenix Coyotes - Chicago Blackhawks 6
Nashville Predators - Detroit Red Wings 7

1) The Canucks have been playing some of their worst hockey I've seen this year, uninspired and sluggish. They still won the President's Trophy. I'm expecting the Canucks to steamroll the Kings, no question.

2) St Louis traps the fuck out of the Sharks, but the Sharks break through a few games with their nice top 6. In the end though, the duo of Halak and Elliott prove too much for their offense, and St Louis manages to put in a few goals for the series win.

3) Phoenix plays by months: one month they're unstoppable, the other month they're terrible. This month is their "on" month; they'll cool off by May, but the defense and Mike Smith is tighter than the legs of a virgin asian schoolgirl at a Catholic school. Chicago has spotty goaltending, that yields a few goals each game. Phoenix take this relatively easily.

4) Probably the best series in the West. Led by Pavel "Dumbledore" Datsyuk and Henrik "Potter" Zetterberg, the two feared wizards of Hogwarts the Detroit Red Wings, and Nicklas "The Terminator" Lidstrom, sent from the future to prevent the Nashville from winning the cup, spiraling the world into an apocalypse, Red Wings stymie Radulov and the rest of their lolworthy offense; Weber and Sutter simply isn't enough to keep up with Detroit. Detroit takes 3 at home, and steals the last one on the road to seal the win.

Round 2

East:

New York Rangers - Washington Capitals 7
Pittsburgh Penguins - New Jersey Devils 7

1) Rematch yet again; Henrik "Duke Devlin" Lundqvist leads the defense with Marian "Yugi" Gaborik and Brad "Joey" Richards bringing the offense, completely destroying the third stringer goalie that is Braden "Weevil" Holtby. Alex "Kaiba" Ovechkin shows up but isn't enough to lead them past the Rangers. Tough series overall.

2) The decapitated head of Sidney Crosby leads the Pens against the Devils. Brodeur spontaneously decomposes in game 4, and the Penguins come back from a 2-1 deficit to take it in 7.

West:

Vancouver Canucks - Detroit Red Wings 6
St Louis Blues - Phoenix Coyotes 5

1) The homer in me sees the Canucks steamrolling the ancient ruins of Detroit, and the fossilized remains of Lidstrom, after his trainers run out of parts to repair him with. The combined strength of Kesler's and Higgin's abs crush Howard, and the Canucks take this relatively easily.

2) Phoenix now enters its off month, and is subsequently crushed by St Louis. Nothing really to say there.

Round 3:

East:

New York Rangers - Pittsburgh Penguins 6

1) Crosby's decapitated head finally gives out; New York grinds the tattered remains of the Penguins to a bloody pulp and advances to the finals.

West:

Vancouver Canucks - St Louis Blues 7

1) Hard grinding matches both ways, with both teams adapting a tight defensive system, yielding one goal games. Hard to say who'd win, but I'm going with Vancouver

Stanley Cup Finals

Vancouver Canucks - New York Rangers 7

1) Pahlsson channels his inner Swedish, putting on the same performance as he did with the Ducks in their cup run. Lapierre trolls all of the NHL as usual, scoring a GWG (in game 5 out of all the games). Vancouver wins its first cup, with subsequent riots firing up anyways. Vancouver is demolished the next day, and the franchise is moved to Quebec City while the city is rebuilt in the next 30 years.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to schedule the 4/5 match ups on the same days should be fired...

Anyway, I will make some predictions that will most likely not come true..

Eastern Conference

(1) New York Rangers vs (8) Ottawa Senators
(2) Boston Bruins vs (7) Washington Capitals
(3) Florida Panthers vs (6) New Jersey Devils
(4) Pittsburgh Penguins vs (5) Philadelphia Flyers

Alright, for starters, I believe the Rangers are in for a deep run. Their sloppy play to end the season aside, they're still better defensively and in goal than the Sens are. I love Erik Karlsson and think Paul MacLean will be coaching a good team for Canada's capital in the next few years but they sort of slid into the playoffs at the end. Torts has been building for this all season and I can't see him allowing an upset in round one. Yes, I'd love to go Caps over Bruins, if only to see tears run from Jrrr's face, but I'm not sold on Hunter as a coach or Holtby as the guy in net. I think Braden has a great future but he's very inexperienced and the Bruins are not. This series might be longer than anticipated but I like the champs to advance in round 1. Gotta go with the Devils; I don't believe in Florida. Enough said there.. Series of the playoffs potentially in Penguins versus Flyers. I expect and hope for it to go 7 and for home ice to have no influence whatsoever (I think Philly was 5-0 at Consol before yesterday). Picking a winner is literally a coin flip but I'll take the Pens if only due to their "whining"... Hey man, whatever you have to do to get Malkin, Crosby, Letang and Neal some PP time...

Future rounds: NY Rangers over NJ Devils, Pitt Penguins over Boston Bruins. NY Rangers over Pitt Penguins.

Western Conference

(1) Vancouver Canucks vs (8) Los Angeles Kings
(2) St. Louis Blues vs (7) San Jose Sharks
(3) Phoenix Coyotes vs (6) Chicago Blackhawks
(4) Nashville Predators vs (5) Detroit Red Wings

Admittedly, I believe the West is more predictable than the East despite the uncertainty we had for seeding during the last day of the regular season. I think we're all still waiting for LA to get over the proverbial hump, Jonathan Quick included, so tough to pick against Vancouver in the first round, even if goal scoring Sedin doesn't return (latest reports say he'll play). Blues and Sharks to me is a no brainer for two reasons: 1) St Louis swept the season series with SJ and 2) the Blues have home ice for this match up.. have you seen their record at Scottrade Center?? (It's 30-6-5 for the lazy). Phoenix and Chicago is the most interesting pairing from this conference in that it's probably the most uncertain. Will Toews return? Which Crawford will we see? Can Chicago's offense outmuscle Phoenix's defense? And can their defense hold up enough when Mike Smith goes into shutout mode? Should be an unsung, but interesting, series. I'm going Phoenix in this one though it would not shock me to see Chicago slip through. I will say this, though I didn't pick it, if an upset's going to happen in the west, it's coming from that match up. Finally, my team, Detroit, as the underdog against Nashville. This Preds team has been there before against the Wings, both in the playoffs, and for quite a while now, in divisional play. They always play tough against Detroit. Nashville has the edge in goal, on defense and number of games played in Tennessee so even if Detroit can work their magic at the Joe, they will still have a tough time stealing anything on the road. To Synre's point, the Wings should have lost yesterday but apparently they wanted the easier travel schedule..

Future rounds: Vancouver Canucks over Nashville Predators, St Louis Blues over Phoenix Coyotes. Vancouver Canucks over St Louis Blues.

Stanley Cup Finals
Vancouver Canucks over NY Rangers

The Bruins got boned on the last day of the season, now they have to face the Caps who they have struggled against this season.

edit instead of making 2 out of 3 posts- and about predix, anything except Penguins and Canucks is good for hockey. Bruins winning back-to-back would be sweet though after the Pats' 2nd place, Celtics age and Red Sox impending death under Valentine

Lil' late for the predictions, but here are mine:

Eastern Conference:

large.png
vs.
large.png

The Rangers are one of the favourites to contend for the cup, and the Sens are going into this game with a losing streak. I honestly don't see how Ottawa can really handle the Rangers unless Anderson plays better than he did in the series he played 2 years ago against San Jose. Rangers win it in 5.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

large.png
vs.
large.png

The Caps won't last long when they're still having goalie issues (and in more ways than one). Also their depth is terrible, so competing with Boston's is gonna suck massive eggs. Boston sweeps the series.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

large.png
vs.
large.png

This series is gonna be interesting. Theodore has been rather terrible in the last few playoff series he has been in, that said the same could be said about Brodeur. My bold prediction is that the Panthers will win it in 7.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

large.png
vs.
large.png

This is probably going to be the best series in the first round. I know that Bryz has been playing really well in the past month or so, but that was how it was last year with Phoenix (and he couldn't stop a thing in the series against Detroit). Penguins win it in 6.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Western Conference:

large.png
vs.
large.png

This series is going to come down to either the Kings inability to score, or whether Luongo crumbles under pressure and chokes. Frankly, I think it's going to be the latter. There's also the matter of whether or not Daniel Sedin will be able to play (and if so, at 100%). Either way, I think that the Kings sweep the series.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

large.png
vs.

HALAK! Blues win it in 5.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

large.png
vs.
large.png

I don't want the Coyotes to win, as the Blackhawks are the far more entertaining team to watch. However the Coyotes are a really good team with a good structure. It'll probably come down to goaltending, which means I think the Coyotes will win it in 7.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

large.png

Why do these 2 always seem to meet up in the first round of the playoffs? Every time they do, Nashville gets eliminated. Hopefully this will change! Nashville wins it in 6.
