Am I the only one who wishes it was one :(
You are one lucky man :).
Anyways I didn't spend a dime on prom junior year except for dinner. It's possible but really prom is homecoming with longer dresses. I don't regret going but wasn't begging to go back. That being said if you want to blow all the money you want I don't see why not. Senior year I didn't go but I got turned down a few times and didn't have a group to go with. Not that I cared, I just was on Smogon that night. But then again, we can't spend our whole lives on Smogon, can we? :naughty::naughty:

Now that I think about it, I am quite lucky because I'm incredibly shy in real life, especially around women.
I'm not too concerned about the cost of prom (My parents are kind enough to cover the costs for me), but I fear screwing up somehow. It doesn't matter if it's a date, prom, homecoming, a test, driving, or talking to my parents, I always fear I'll screw up. But, I think it'll be a great opportunity for one of the best experiences of high school, so I'm going for it.

Also that's the most bullshit point to make I've ever heard. Do I not have your permission to have an opinion on the subject? Let me attempt to break it down:
- I've had multiple girlfriends so it's not a matter of being single
- I don't give a single fuck about the event that is prom
- I hate people, particularly the ones at my school
- I don't like gatherings of people that I don't know
- I don't like dancing, especially when mainstream music is involved
- I like to spend my money wisely
- There are multiple things I would genuinely rather do

To comment more on prom: I really don't get what sets it apart so much and why people give it the insane amounts of hype and pressure people to go so much. If you're doing it for a relationship, why not take the money for renting or buying a suit or dress and go out to a nice restaurant and the works? If you need other people, what's wrong with a regular party or at least one that's somewhat formal but doesn't have a door charge or require specific expensive clothes? It always just seemed like a bandwagon appeal to me which has never been my thing

Prom involves interaction between the sexes. We play pokemon, competitively, online. I don't see how these two details are reconcilable.
my senior prom's coming up next friday so i'm p excited about that
last year i was basically a snobbish dick toward prom (one of the people who are like "oh psssh no, not going to that. prom is stupid. i'd rather stay home and watch sitcoms on netflix [which is perfectly respectable and is something i still do])
then i got a girlfriend and it pretty much changes your perspective on things. even if prom itself ends up being stupid, it's more about the experience and the symbolism behind it than the event itself
i ramble. i'm sure that if i were single at this time i'd have the same attitude that "prom is stupid", and maybe it is. w/e. don't hate

prom is like schrodinger's cat, it both sucks and doesn't. agreeing with mcAzn that it's different things to different people, i tagged along with a bunch of seniors last year sans date and felt fairly isolated but especially among seniors the tangible fuzzy feeling of community kind of overpowers the (lame or silly in and of itself) event / venue. i'm sure if you have a date it is the same way (i.e. your feelings about being there with that person are more powerful than your cynicism at the fact you are going to a prom).

My highschool was incredibly small (our graduating class had a total of 37 kids) so we didn't have a normal prom. It was more like a gala, which was very bizarre (especially after going to two "normal" proms the following year)
For me prom was all about seeing most of my classmates (people I hate) one last time before we all headed off to different schools.

I would hope that prom could be an experience that sets a precedent or a habit, in the sense of how you approach parties for the rest of your life.
If you decide that the point of parties is to get laid, you will have a bad time at parties. This is a fact. If your only expectation is to get laid, you'll have a bad time and you make the experience worse for everyone else. Even if the expectation is reasonable you should still detach yourself from it.
To give an example, I was at a 'marriage' party. At these parties individuals marry each other just for the night. It's kind of a silly joke thing, but it's exactly the type of theme where people expect to get laid. You bring a date to 'marry,' you might even marry a random stranger, you might marry your most innocent, platonic friend. You might walk up to that hot chick and ask her if she'll marry you. It's not an innocent situation, you have to respect this as the opinion of someone who has experienced it: this party's theme was very sexual, and many people were hooking up.
Anyway, my friends and I were sitting around drinking in front of a fire pit, and there's a dude who walks up and starts bitching about how his date ditched him and how he wasn't going to get laid when according to him 'everyone else is going home with company.' He was moaning about what a terrible experience he was having, and on and on and on.
The group I was sitting with was having a great time, and none of us were going to get laid that night. Some of us had dates, some of us married random chicks and then ditched them, some of us just chilled the whole time. And now we were sitting and talking and shit. This guy really didn't understand that our different expectation for the party was what allowed us to enjoy it. Getting laid would have been great, but we were all much more interested in enjoying meeting people and drinking and dancing for the sake of fun.
You don't want to go into any social interaction with a big expectation, and I think that frequently the sexual expectation leads to poorer experiences. This concluded my first point/
My second point concerns sex:
Everything that anyone tells you about sex is simultaneously true and false. Sex is shrouded in such quantities of mystique and glamour that I would consider only what I personally have experienced, sexually, as a fact about sex. It's a very diverse activity.
If you have sex for the first time on prom night, or any night, it will be terrifying, weird, and likely horrifying when you look back on it. Don't expect to have good sex or bad sex (there is no need for you to have bad sex on your first time, it just tends to be that way). You'll probably be relieved when it's over.
Lastly, when you start partying in college, drink all the booze. This may sound like bad advice, but I promise it isn't. pinky promise, cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die, this is sound advice.

i don't like the idea of prom. we didn't have one, the only reason for dates was walking down a read carpet in front of the school for grad. then we all went to a formal dinner with friends and had a big party all night. i just walked the red carpet with some ladyfriends.
i also wanted to make a batman dress but my parents decided that wasn't cool so i just wore a batman necklace instead. i tried to find the cheapest dress possible that my mom would accept (she wanted me to wear a "real" dress) and even that was $200 which is way too much for some fabric that needed to be shortened by over a foot anyway. i had a black dress and looked a little like i was going to a funeral.
and my mom wanted me to have a clutch so she could keep it after, so i carried this useless little bag around all night.
there was also friend drama because people think it's cool to get graduation dates in like grade nine, then they date and break up and hate each other and everything gets all awkward because we've all booked the same limo together.

Here in Japan, the kids don't get prom... or school dances at all... which is a real shame, because Japanese society could go for a healthy injection of get-over-it-touching-the-other-gender-is-ok.
...also Hawaii is one of 2 states in the US that has girl's wrestling, and I went to prom with my co-captain (the girl's team's captain)... lol
...don't worry, she was really cute. In Hawaii, even small asian girls wrestle.
Though in our case, it was kind of a holy-shit-we-were-both-so-caught-up-with-wrestling-and-judo-season-that-we-forgot-to-ask-anyone-to-prom-let's-go-together. lol
^oh yeah, in Hawaii, Judo is a state sport, just like football or baseball. Well, a good percentage of the participants also wrestle.
Prom was scheduled the week after the Judo State Championship tournament, which we were relieved about since it meant not having to cut weight during prom. lol
If I recall correctly, Junior function fell between the two seasons which was also lucky.
