Gastro Acid..

It just cancels the ability of the enemy.

I was wondering if there's any use for this, since I have a thing for these moves that nobody uses and are only learnt by a few different pokemon.

Would it end a Sandstream if used against Tyranitar/Hippowdon? Or the Hailstorm brought up by Abomasnow?
Or Drizzle/Drought?

I can't test it right now, hence why I asked.

Arbok and Swalot could make Medicham look like a joke since it would destroy his Pure Power, same with Azumarills Huge Power..
It could also let you break through any abilities which protect against status effects, which would be great for double battles (for example, you could put Banette to sleep).
It also means levitators come to the ground and can be Earthquaked.

I think it's a pretty cool move, any thoughts?

No.

It's a good move to use, especially if you know the opponent relies on their ability. I love using Shuckle to nail a Ninjask with Gastro Acid, then when they switch to negate the effect, I use Power Swap and pray they switched out a special rather than physical. Special = I can rape them with Gyro Ball or EQ, Physical = I have to swith out, but I still ruined their Ninjask's BP or whatever else they were trying to do.

Gastro Acid is a cool move, end of story. If only this gen was less around sweeping so it would be more useful. As is, it's just situational to occasionally pull off on random Levitators or whatever- And even so, they'll 99% of the time switch out if you Gastro Acid an ability that they predict will cost them (like a Gastro-Acid'd levitator would expect a ground move and bring in Skarmory to Whirlwind you away, or whatever.)

Gastro Acid has its uses as you've mentioned, not to mention it prevents Clefable being able to do whatever it pleases in the presence of Shuckle.

That said if used on the switch it can be pretty dangerous if you catch a Slaking or a maybe the odd Regigias.

I prefer Worry Seed as in addition to nulling abilities it prevents tanks from resting off damage/status, which is probably an order of magnitude more useful than just canceling abilities.

does it remove the trait for the rest of the battle? or does the pokemon get the trait back when it switches back in?

Eh, does Gastro Acid even work on Magic Guard Clefable? It doesn't do any damage, and should be warded off by Magic Guard... Unless I am mistaken.

No. Magic Guard just blocks indirect damage, such as damage from statuses like Poison and weather effects like Hail. It also blocks Life Orb recoil.
