Decent Moveset For Umbreon In D&P

Since the release of Diamond and Pearl, I have seen a lot of people bad mouthing Umbreon. While its definitely not the best Pokemon for a competitive team, it still holds some use. I've been trying to come up with a decent moveset for Umbreon so that it would be some what useful on a team, so what do you guys think, whats a decent D&P Umbreon?

I don't like Umbreon much regardless of its use in battle. Its fanbase ruined it for me.

I guess it would be something with mean look and toxic.

Why hello there, GreatSage! :)

I guess a set with

Mean Look
Toxic/Charm
Baton Pass
Payback

could work.

Umbreon is too slow to pull off a trap pass, as if you lead and try to pull one off you'll most likely be dead in an instant. Special Sweepers can hit harder this generation, so they need not pull out when Umbreon shows it's ugly hideous face. Umbreon is best left with the role of wishpasser, and even with that there are better choices

Umbreon is the only sleep-trapper so you could try this:

Sassy Umbreon @ Leftovers
Mean Look
Yawn
Baton Pass
Wish

So Mean Look, Yawn, Baton Pass. You'll have to taken down their Heracross or Infernape or whatever they have with Close Combat / Megahorn first. Umbreon can only take one hit from either of those attacks to live and it'll be in the yellow. The point is to obviously pass to something that can set up while they're asleep and can't switch.

I want to try it myself, but I already have something else with a sleep move and don't want to rebreed for Yawn =( I did Curse + Wish and that didn't work out the way I wanted. Currently testing out Protect to make it pretty much a 100% wishpasser.

OK, so I'm biased... If you aren't afraid of Heracross (read: have Gliscor on your team), Toxic is the best way for Umbreon to do damage to things that aren't weak to Dark.

I Don't Use Umbreon in D/P. I Don't like Umbreon in D/P. I Used to like Umbreon, but not in D/P. Who Uses Umbreon in D/P? My Sister used Umbreon in G/S. Go Use Mantyke in D/P.

Get the point? I don't...

I think you could actually run Umbreon as a starter with this set:

name:Starter
move1:P:P: Protect
move2:P:P: Payback
move3: Wish
move4: Yawn
item: Burn Orb
nature: Careful / Sassy
evs: 252HP / 212SPDEF / 46ATT

The basic idea is to Protect on the first turn, letting Synchronize burn your opponent's starter. Really, this strategy works well with any Synchronize user, but Umbreon deserves a mention, as most starters are physically-oriented, and few battlers mind keeping in their physical sweepers against Umbreon. Later on, use for Wish Support.

Umm, Synchronize fails with Burn Orb. You'd just get Burned, and not the opponent.

Also, Pursuit is somewhat of an option. It also gets Screech iirc. Not sure how that will work

Tandem Charmtrapping should do it.

Umbreon @ Leftovers
~ Charm
~ Mean Look
~ Baton Pass
~ Wish

Charm first to hit whatever comes in, then use Mean Look and Baton Pass out. This way your next pokemon is either facing something that completely walls them (Bliss for example) or they're attacking power is seriously hampered, allowing another pokemon to set up.

Try this one on for size:

move1: Psychic
move2: Substitute
move3: Baton Pass
move4: Yawn / Moonlight / Dark Pulse / Toxic

EVs: 252 HP / 80 Def / 176 SpATK
nature: Calm / Bold
item: Leftovers

A 3HKO to Heracross! Just bring it in on something like Cresselia, Sub up, hit the Heracross switching in, then switch out to whatever resists Heracross' move - even better if it's Choice item'd so it's forced to switch out again.

If the only point of this is to LOL 3HKO Heracross, why not just use HP Flying and get a 2HKO?

This thread interests me as I currently have Umbreon in my final team. I've been looking for more of an offensive replacement for her, as she is mainly to Wishpass. BUT, I think a neat idea would be to use her as a Subpasser. Would this work?

Umbreon @ Leftovers (Salac Berry?)
-Wish
-Substitute
-Charm
-Baton Pass

Too susceptible to switches IMO. If i replaced Charm with Mean Look, I probably still couldn't do this successfully, as I'd be trapping a sweeper with SD or DD most likely. The Salac Berry would give her a quick 1-up, but her speed is just so terrible.

I classify this Pokemon as "Almost good." Her moveset is great, but you leave yourself wide open for a setup. Prediction aside, I think I;m trying to do too much with one Poke.

Jynx, Crobat, Gengar, Gardevoir/Gallade, Tangrowth, Bronzong, Snorlax and Smeargle all can sleep-trap. And most of them are a lot more overall threatening than Umbreon.

Smeargle is the only other one who can Baton Pass it out, though.

They can't Baton Pass as far as I know. That's what I meant. They can sleep, trap, baton pass to something that can use that time to set up.

Hi, I'm new and pretty much starting to make my first competitive team, but I was wondering. I keep reading that one of the reasons that Umbreon fails is because he is too slow, so my question is, what if you baton pass it some speed, then use it to trap things, and baton pass it to something else?

Because Baton Passing Speed to a Sweeper is a better idea.

Umbreon doesn't fail because it's too slow. It's slowness is a help when you pass Wish after all. It "fails" because its resistances/immunities aren't too useful (Psychic immunity, dark/ghost resist). Since he can't do anything offensively, Pokemon can easily use him to set up.

Mean Look doesn't require speed as usually, when you put Umbreon in they'll switch to something and you'll be trapping that. Its still got great defense, only thing you gotta watch out for is the heracross/infernape/etc. switch-ins and Taunt. Taunt will screw you.

Well, for that very reason it's nice to keep an offensive move. So let's see what we've deduced here and narrow things down:

Umbreon@Leftovers/Flame Orb (if it works with synchronize)
~Baton Pass/ConfuseRay/Toxic
~Wish/Moonlight
~Assurance/Payback/Facade/Attacking Move/MeanLook
~Sub/Curse/Snatch/Taunt/ConfuseRay/Toxic/MeanLook/Yawn/Protect/StatLoweringMove

That's a bundle. But meh. You can always Baton Pass Sub, though Vaporeon might be better for that. I heard someone saying that often the opponent sets up on umbreon, so why not snatch? You can always baton pass curse. Taunt forces the opponent to attack. Confuse Ray confuses opponent. Toxic entoxicates. Mean Look because it traps the opponent. Yawn if you use Mean Look over an attacking move. Protect helps Toxic. StatLowering move like Charm and Screech helps too with Mean Look.

Not sure. How about it? Then again, I must say... "so much for narrowing it down", but from this you can create an annoyer set: ConfuseRay, Toxic, MeanLook, Moonlight. Or a Baton Passing Set: Baton Pass, Wish, Payback, Snatch/Sub. And Blah Blah Blah.
