"Caught in the Undertow" - 2v2 Blastoise Rapid Spinner/Hazer

"Caught in the Undertow" - Blastoise Rapid Spinner/Hazer

Blastoise “Undertow” @ Leftovers
Torrent // Careful (- ATK + SPDEF)
255 HP // 255 DEF // 4 SPDEF
  • Haze
  • Protect
  • Rapid Spin
  • Muddy Water
Yeah, you can laugh at me now.

Anyone got a better idea? I mean, Haze and Rapid Spin sound good but I'm unsure of what to put on Blastoise. It looks like an interesting Rapid Spinner, but apparently Rapid Spinning isn't needed in 2v2 so I was thinking it could have a use in 1v1 with all of the Rocks and Spikes flying about.

People bother with spikes/sr in 2v2? Since... when?

I don't even like haze much in standard, but in 2v2, it seems even more worthless, since everything dies so fast anyway. You may as well spend that turn attacking instead.

Alrighty then... what about as a regular one? There's no guide for Blastoise and it looks like an interesting Rapid Spinner with all the Spikes and S.R. flying about, so I wanted to use it. If I can't use it in 2v2, perhaps it has a use in 1v1?

Blastoise could be worse, but the biggest problem is getting around Dusknoir if your opponent's packing it. You could try using Toxic, which isn't bad considering Blastoise's mediocre offense anyway, or intentionally sending in weakened pokemon to Dusknoir to deny it recovery via Pain Split. Blastoise's Surf does half-assed damage to it if it's weakened.

Blastoise could be a Bulky Water with its stats, why isn't it used??....

Then you notice these Water Pokes: Milotic, Vaporeon, Slowbro, Suicune, Ludicolo, Empoleon, Swampert, Gyarados and Manaphy and you say: "Oh, I DO UNDERSTAND now ^^"

I thought that you want an attacking move on all your Pokes. What about Hydro Pump? You do suffer a slightly lowered rate of accuracy, but it's more powerful and could potentially hit harder in a pinch.

I think you want Calm instead of Careful. Careful reduces Special Attack.

My Blastoise runs like this:

Blastoise@Leftovers
Calm: 252 HP, 128 Def, 128 SpDef
Haze
Rapid Spin
Hydro Pump
Ice Beam

I had Aqua Ring before Ice Beam, but Blastoise never stays in long. Ice Beam covers quite a few common threats, so I threw that on him. It's a pretty useful set, and it's helped me quite a bit when facing BP teams.

My apologies.

As to masquerade - Ice Beam is a good idea. How does it do when up against things like Gyarados/Garchomp/Salamence/Dragonite as far as damage goes?

@Arceus: I have yet to face any of those Pokes with Blasty, as I have several other things to cover them. However, I'm sure against the dragons IB would be very dangerous, if not fatal.

EDIT: I ran damage calcs for these-
Assuming 31 IVs in all stats, no SpAtk EVs for Blastoise, no SpDef/HP EVs for dragons:

Salamence: 85-100%
Garchomp: 77-91%
Dragonite: 75-88%

Against Gyara with Ice Fang/Waterfall/Taunt/Dragon Dance, you'd probably be better off switching to a counter. He'll Taunt you, DD up and start hitting for some decent damage, while you can either IB for some pretty weak damage or switch. Though both attacks are NVE on Blasty, so I think you'd be able to take a few hits, if need be.
