With Gyarados on the rise again, will we see more of 'Zam?

A lot of Gyarados of late are equipped with Taunt and Dragon Dance, thinking that just because they're a bulky water means that they can afford a hit or two while setting up a sweep. Gyarados is easily one of the more popular leads now, since he can shut down Ninjask and can start a sweep at the beginning of a match.

But now, what about Trickbanding Alakazam? Tricking Gyarados into wearing a set of Choice Specs would be pretty nasty, since now he can't Taunt OR DD. And since the standard bulky water Gyarados we all love so much doesn't have many EVs in it's attack stat, without DD it's easily a sub-par sweeper.

Of course, these are my thoughts on it. You may disagree, but I really do think 'Zam could make a comeback now in place of so many Gengars.

Dear sir,

I am interested in your idea and wish to subscribe to your newsletter. Or maybe I'm not interested in the idea too much. At any rate, I suppose what I'm trying to say is, what is this "'Zam" of which you speak?

Best regards,
-Blizzard

*edit* After great amounts of thought, I finally think of a name ending with "zam", alakazam. I will now use alakazam in this thread so that we all may be enlightened, and so that it may show up in the search. Alakazam alakazam alakazam. : D

You can screw almost everything with Trick Zam, which makes him a somewhat good leader

But Specs Mence, Weavile and CS Cross/Tar OHKOs you, and all of them outspeed Alakazam, except Specs Mence that can take a hit, "absorb" trick and OHKOs with Draco Meteor. Being countered by so many commom leaders doesn't make Alakazam a good choice, tough Trick can cause some problems to Gyarados and Swampert.

But Alakazam should be a middle/late game sweeper, or disabler of walls like Blissey instead of leader, IMO

If your really scared of Gyarados, just use Slowbro/Weezing/Vaporean/etc.. there's alot of stuff that can own Gyarados.

CSgross has to be Jolly to outspeed Zam, unless you have HP Fire also your kinda screwed.

CS tyranitar? Thats not common at all..

But yeah.. don't lead with Zam. If you run into Weavile your owned (unless you go with Focus Sash and Counter, >_>). Or even an Aerodactyl can pursuit you if you, or if you run into Metagross it can pursuit you (if they do go Jolly with CSgross your screwed). If you run into a CSheracross lead, it'll pursuit you.

Zam is not a good lead, and not the best way to handle gyarados at all...

You could TRY to use CS zam. Focus blast/HP fighting weaviles, do whatever you like to gyrados. Could be a nasty surprise, I guess... it'd work better than the physical sweeper set I'm trying with zam right now.

There's one big problem with your strategy: Alakazam can't switch into Gyarados without, you know, dying.

It still can't reliably come in and revenge kill if Gyara has even one DD, and it doesn't work as a lead since Gyarados is a Pokemon that is usually intended to finish battles, not start them.

This is a silly topic. Gyarados being on the rise is good for stuff like Slowbro that can actually come in on it, not stuff like Alakazam.

And there's no way that Salamence outspeeds Alakazam.. check your stats. O_o

I didn't say Salamence outspeed Alakazam. Please, read carefully.
