Quick question about Bulky Gyarados.

For a Bulky Gyarados, what is the significance in hitting an Atk stat of 319? I read Jumpman's analysis, but I'm still confused. All he says is "16 Atk EVs grants it its first possible bonus point".

I posted it in the Simple Question/Answer topic, but I guess nobody that would know goes there.

The "bonus" point happens with natures that add to a stat. So if you're Adamant, there's a certain point where 4 EVs gives you 2 stat points instead of one. If you have an IV number other than 31, this will be different. I found it easiest to calculate for my Pokemon by going to NetBattle, opening the team builder, and just setting the IVs the same as my Pokemon and moving the slidebar until I saw the stat number go up by 2 instead of 1.

if you're interested, the reason is because the game uses a "floor" function (or rounding down) to calculate stats. adding 4 EVs gives you +1.1 to a stat due to the +10% from your nature. if your stat is already something like 280.9 (completely random number), it will show up as 280. if you add 4 EVs, you get +1.1, making it 282. you essentially got a "free" point.

Damn it, I just finished EV training my Bulky Gyarados with the standard bulky EVs, but I took 4 EVs off from attack and put it in HP to make up for the 30 IV. 2 points shouldn't really be a difference and I doubt there's any specific pokemon that the 16 EVs is gonna OHKO/2HKO that the 12 EVs won't.

I just run max HP / 234 Speed (stat), and rest in Def. It seems to work well for me. You take about 3% less versus Thunderbolts

Its stuff like this that causes problems for people that simply run off EV spreads from the analysis forums and assume others to be doing the same. Whenever someone deviates, people get caught by surprise and can get swept. An example of this would be a friend of mine surviving a TBolt from a Starmie where the Starmie user assumed a OHKO.

It is always good to evaluate what you want to get out of your Pokes, and deviating slightly is always good. I wouldn't run the EV spreads found in the analysis forums unless you really understand what they're for and that you want those desired effects.

Crazy stuff is always fun though, I sure loved watching my Swampert OHKO Zapdos after Countering an HP Grass.
