Legends Banned in PBR

I thought it might be a good idea to give this discussion a thread of its own instead of having it clutter up the "Who has PBR?" thread.

Apparently, sometime last night a ban was placed on PBR Wi-Fi. No legendary Pokémon of any sort are usable in Random Wi-Fi matches. Personally, I'm thrilled. That aside, I'm hoping to gather all of the information about this phenomenon together in one place.

There have been rumors that resetting your Battle Pass bypasses the ban. Also, a member of the GameFAQs forums claims to have received email correspondence from Nintendo of America. In this email, representatives of NOA are saying that this is a glitch brought about by some maintenance on the PBR servers and that it will be fixed in 'one or two weeks'. I find this claim rather dubious. What kind of glitch bans only legendary Pokémon?

Those of you in a position to test this new ban/glitch, what can you tell us?

"In the beginning, all legends were banned. This has made a lot of people very angry and is generally considered a bad move."

Meh, I don't use legends anyway (Cresselia is a POSSIBLE exception), so this is nothing but good news to me.

Marry me.

But yeah, I don't really mind so far, it's made my wi-fi battles more entertaining, but it really should just be an option, seeing how much the packaging implies taking Dialga/Palkia online.

Yeah i was playing at like 11:15 or so last night against some guy with a dialga... wonder if it was one of the last legendaries used :O and then the next time i tried to find an opponent my wifi wouldnt work. So i wonder i guess they were updating it then..

I don't have the game but this sounds very interesting. I find it strange that they would go from basically "anything goes" to a ban this harsh. But I don't think this hurts the game in any way, it will probably just make things a lot more interesting without all random Uber users who know nothing about strategy.

This sound like good news and most likely not a glitch but you should definitely be able to turn it on/off when battling your friends.

I'd rather they changed the ban to the Pokemon they ban from Battle Tower. Would keep it fairer and that's the closest they'll get to the tier system most of us use. Enforcing Sleep Clause is what I want them to do most.

From what I'm reading, the ban only affects random matches. You can use whatever rules/Pokémon you want when using Friend Codes.

It does seem strange that they'd make this change without first instituting Species Clause, Sleep Clause, and Freeze Clause. The lack of Item Clause is also surprising, seeing as how Nintendo usually includes it for most of its official battles.

Here's another interesing question. In most of the literature about PBR, including the NintendoWiFi site, it claims that matches are found based on a ranking system. There doesn't seem to be any sort of visible ranking system. Is it invisible, or does it not exist at all? It's hard to test something like this.

I think Nintendo took it way too far in banning things. Someone go and call them and change this.

Its not particularly fair, considering that Cresselia is a great answer to a lot of the non legendary threats(Salamence, Gyarados, Garchomp, etc).

Although this ban may cause DS WiFi battling better and much more popular than PBR, since legends like Jirachi(Arguably one of if not the best Wish passers in OU at the moment) really boost the fun of the metagame.

PBR has no Species clause?

Random PBR battles is going to be so much fun when it comes to EU.

This ban is just preposterous. So what if people can't use their fun teams? People with fun teams either expect to lose (like many Smogoners when they choose to run a fun team) or deserve to lose (like the random idiots on WiFi).

I don't have the game but I thought it would be smart to be able to create listen servers of your own and use what rule set you want and wait for someone to join you. Which in those rules you could have banned ubers, or at least the pokemon that are banned from the BT as they don't do nothing of tiers. Like any PC game works basically.

A blanket ban on Legendaries is stupid, as there are Legendaries that aren't as overpowered as crap like Mewtwo. Because of this, I'm now missing a Special Tank (Cresselia) and my Choice Scarf Sweeper (Heatran).

Total garbage, because I'd prefer having to train up a damn Blissey to replace my Cresselia, and I have really no idea what the replace my Heatran with. They really should enforce the Battle Tower bans for WiFi, not just stupid blanket bans.

But I'll hold my breath, according to Serebii this isn't a ban as much as it is a glitch. Maybe I won't be stuck having to train a damn Blissey.

Wait, is this a ban on all legendaries (including stuff like Raikou and Zapdos) or just Ubers like Dialga?

I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear. ALL legendaries are banned. This includes all the birds, dogs, statues, and spirits, as well as all event Pokémon.

On another note, it seems odd to be a glitch. First of all, what were they changing when they introduced the glitch? Second, why would it take one to two weeks to fix?

I think they should put an option for random WiFi battles to allow legendaries or not. It's only fair. They banned event pokemon, and now this?

Well, I may buy PBR in the future (or at least win it by sweepstakes or so), and this kinda dropped my hopes

Oh well, I'm hoping it's a bug

So from what I'm gathering here, all legends are currently banned from PBR, but only some are banned from GTS. Can we figure out which ones?

EDIT: Nevermind. There's a new thread about the possible GTS ban. Please direct all future discussion about GTS there.

Banning all legendaries is a bit harsh and bad for the game balance as some point out. While I don't see it necessary to use legends in any way some of them are of course not overpowered and might as well be allowed.

But even if thi is a glitch or a planned ban I at least think it's positive to see that it's entirely possible to make modifications like this even now when the game is already out. This hopefully means that most of the obvious rules and clauses as well as banning of hacked Pokémon will be implemented in the future.

You're right. I hate fun, too!

Seriously, though. If indeed Nintendo's trying to create an environment where fun, creative teams can flourish, why is this a bad thing? You seem to be arguing that fun and success should be mutually exclusive.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. I'm hoping that they're willing to release a patch for the game, if necessary. I don't have high hopes for that, though. It doesn't seem to be Nintendo's style.
