New Smogon Layout Discussion

Banned deucer.
Never done this before, but seeing the copious amount of joke threads that revolve around this stuff I figure i may as well.

So yeah, like the pretentious title says (Not bold enough to go with a dumb name, i'm afraid), this is here to discuss all the new stuff smogon has, what you like, what you wish would die in a fire

personally a huge fan of the notifications; getting notified when someone quote-replies to you is great since that's usually like a direct message to you personally, just useful in general for anything you want to be notified about i s'pose

Liking threads is... all right, i guess? Kind of a good way for newer users to know people like their stuff, and it can give you an ego boost, but eh.

New look is w/e, kind of miss the old one but whatever. (Also, xenforo is displayed as prominently in the banner as Smogon itself was. Might want to change that up if possible?)

So yeah, discuss.

I'm in love with these forums, only complaint would be they're maybe a little bland but the amount of options and general smoothness is amazing.

I miss the old text editor (i.e. the one with the buttons), but I am in love with the aesthetics of xenForo. I also miss the [jump] and [box] tags, since I used them in my RMTs.

I'm fond of the like feature and the notification feature is okay, but needs a bit more tweaking. For the "like" feature, when you agree with what someone has to say, but you don't feel like posting, that's just a nice way to express your agreement. I could see it being a thing in viability ranking threads and whatnot. The notification feature was annoying at first, but I had to disable some stuff before it become okay. Notifying when someone quotes you is cool, but I would like it if you could select notification for certain threads (I think this might be a thing already, but idk). A dislike feature would be nice too, but I could see some problems with that. Oh, and no one's avatar breaks the page!!! That right there is great.

Hmmm.... I was unable to edit a post earlier - I can't find the button? I'd also like to see hide tags back in. Also, did social groups disappear? I really appreciate the like feature, as now if people agree with an argument, they can just like the post instead of repeating the content of the post again and again in slightly different ways.

Being able to see users' post counts was helpful before, as it helped weed out the two-post "GO VAPOREON" idiots, but at least this way, there's less incentive to whore around for post count (you know who you are).

I really dislike some of the changes here.

On the other hand, I'm really glad Smogon's back up again in any form, and it got me to finally change my avatar, so there's that.

Yeah, i don't get why or how the edit thing works, it could just be a bug or kink to be worked out or an on-purpose feature but its disappearing kind of annoys me-it's there at first and then gone

i think these designations are better because they do weed out those idiots more effectively. Plus, active or not is a great indication as well. (And yeah, hide tags should really exist again. And be more prominent-super useful tags)

j/s but this is only the basic skin, there's still a ton of layout and feature changes that the staff has planned in the coming days

Edit tag goes away after 5 minutes. When I was trying to edit my post, it said something like the edit time expires after 5 minutes or something. That shit needs to burn, because it makes doing stuff in C&C impossible.

mine seems fine

what nj has said. chaos has pretty much just implemented everything necessary for smogon to actually be up, and he and joim are working on restoring / fixing some features lost in transition.
this thread could be more constructive in focusing on the neat features that xenforo has that Smogon lacked. I like the new prominence of avatars in thread listings, and it's pretty damn great that you can receive alerts when someone quotes you so that you know you are being referenced in a discussion.

one thing I noticed hasn't been added is that you don't watch a thread automatically on posting in it, I am unsure if I like this or not at this point

anyway, you can watch a thread now by clicking on 'watch thread' at the top which gives you alerts when it has been posted in, which is a nice feature, could be helpful for people in C&C

and it's pretty damn great that you can receive alerts when someone quotes you so that you know you are being referenced in a discussion.

Speaking of alerts (which I really like), I hope we get a way to delete old entries later. I bet everyone's alert page is already cluttered by now. …Unless this function is already available and I'm missing something completely obvious.

I actually didn't talk at all about the aesthetics in my post, not really caring too much either way. I preferred the old layout a bit, but that's mostly due to being used to it

The avatars thing in threads is interesting, cool way to kind of identify the thread a bit more and show off your avatar

A really cool thing is, a lot of profile management stuff is now much more accessible, which is quite nice. Did we even have an ignore users feature before? Not sure, but we have it now and it's easy to find and alter, cool stuff there

Also @above there's unwatch thread in the thread itself, so you can do that any time you go to view a post from an alert

Alerts only show up to the last four in the little tab anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue; I guess I guess I can see the use in having a way to clear old alerts akin to swiping away notifications in android, however.

There's not much I don't like outside of the stuff that has yet to be implemented but I don't like the fact that the avatars are now enclosed in that little blue box, I really liked it better before as it made then look better imo (the size change also bothers me)

One thing I really find interesting but I have yet to decide if I like is the 50 posts per page instead of the 25 we had before, it useful for reading treads without having to change page so often (and is great for when you keep a page to read for a trip or something) but some pages take too long to load because of it (more thanks to the lack of hide) that it's making me go nuts over some treads, otherwise I'm curious as to the changes that will be coming on the upcoming days (though I really want the forums to looks a bit more organic like they used to, idk I don't like this blue look, it's too generic)

Hmm i think its fine, although i very strongly agree that you shouldnt be limited to 5 minutes to edit a post.

Whats up with updating statuses? Lol

If you go to a part of your profile (including alerts), you can see 'likes you've received'. Nice to see, i guess, although gives even more weight to likes that maybe they shouldn't have
