Didn't Fire Spin also seem to do 1/8th damage to Pikachu after each turn? That would kinda disprove the type advantage theory.Fire Spin would do that in Gen V too, since it has an initial fire hit. The trick is whether the residual damage is super effective.
Oh that's a good point, I thought the shiny one confirmed either 95 or 110 base HP, but wow....that just justifies even more how the hell sylveon survived the life orb, crit, rain hydro pump.
For reference assuming the absolute minimum damage case of -SpAtk Nature, 0 SpAtk IV, 0 SpAtk EV Politoed and Calm sylveon with 95 base HP and 130 base SpDef, all 31 IVs, 252 HP and 252 SpDef investment takes:
0- SpA Life Orb Politoed Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD (custom) in rain on a critical hit: 118-140 (58.41 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
According to the battle log in the previous page, politoed did 50% to damage to Sylveon on the first Hydro Pump. Every other case does significant more damage than this. And this case is extremely unlikely.
There is definitely a battle mechanics change, either crit is nerfed, rain is nerfed, or sylveon's dream world ability, or other possibilities....but it cannot be possible with the current damage calculation formula.
Are you sure? It looked like 55% damage to me. If Politoed has 0 SAtk IV and Adamant nature (but lol why LO), then the damage range is 54.3% - 64.2%. This would mean everything's in order... except for the CH damage. It looked to me to be the same.
If anything, I'm betting on Multiscale for now.
Uh.. I confirmed it.No, people have not. They just assumed it because some kind of text appeared after the attack. Since it wasn't SE damage, people assumed it was the Critical Hit message. But it could also be the cheer-up lines added in this generation (Could have been something like "Come on, Sylveon, you can do this!"). Rest assured, we can safely say Sylveon has an impressive Special Bulk.
Additionally, I can confirm Politoed did crit Sylveon. きゅうしょに あたった! is the correct text for a critical hit.
Edit: Nevermind. Well then, Politoed must have had a SpA-hindering Nature and Sylveon a SpD-boosting Nature. There's no other possible case in which Sylveon could have survived that hit.
Politoed had a life orb, that's confirmed from the video. People have also confirmed the first hydro pump to be a critical hit. I still don't see how a sylveon can have scales? I said 50% because someone took notes and made a battle log which wrote 50%.
And btw that Politoed had 31 ivs in HP and 252 Evs in HP. In fact, all of the pokemon: Gallade, Marowak, Ferrothorn, and Politoed have 31 IVs in HP. You can verify yourself from the video. Gallade, Politoed and Ferrothorn had 252 EVs in HP also. This is why its very unlikely to have Politoed be -SPA Nature and have 0 IV and 0 Evs in SpAtk.
Politoed is most likely to be Modest 31 SpAtk Ivs, 252 HP Evs and 252 SpAtk Evs to me, since it has a Life Orb.
I know it has Life Orb. I guess I didn't make myself clear; that was the damage range for a Critical Hit with 0 EV/IV, Adamant Nature and a Life Orb.
I don't care they had 31 IVs in HP. HP is not SAtk. What I know is that that range is possible if the stats were "rigged" in favor of Morimoto. I'm not buying and "mechanics change" except for the CH multiplier, as no amount of calculation will change the fact that second hit was just too strong; for now, that weird ~55% damage is possible in the confines of BW multiplayer battling.
Critical Hits could be nerfed, weather-boosting could be nerfed. But these are all "could be"s. We're speculating with what's already existing. If we're doing "could be"s, as someone else said, Sylveon "could be" having higher BSTs than the other Eeveelutions.I actually believe highly likely that the battle was rigged, and ivs were pre-created before filming the battle. The only battle mechanics change (if there is one) I expect is like you said, critical hits being nerfed. And that is because Masuda confirmed that pokemon amie can increase a pokemon's chances of getting critical hits waay back. In order to make critical hit less abused by this mechanic, critical hits could be nerfed.
I just don't think there is no battle mechanics changes....

they also had a choice of 6 Pokemon and one side only used 4 while the other used 5...it was DEFINITELY RIGGED but VERY ENTERTAINING none-the-less.I actually believe highly likely that the battle was rigged, and ivs were pre-created before filming the battle. I just don't think there is no battle mechanics changes....I think that critical hits might just ignore stat boosts but not give a x2 boost. i.e. prevent stall.

Is anyone else slightly concerned that the official Game Freak name for EVs is "base stats"? I can see this causing confusion down the line.

I believe they still do o.o'IIRC they have been doing this since RBY. I'm pretty sure the vitamin items (used to?) refer to increasing "base stats". It's a naming discrepancy between the player base and TPCi. I wonder what they call the actual base stats.
I don't see a problem here. Technically, 4 EVs = 1 Base Stat (63 Max).Is anyone else slightly concerned that the official Game Freak name for EVs is "base stats"? I can see this causing confusion down the line.
