The Next Best Thing...

So I've been given permission to take this over. That said, HotnCold wins this round with his Mixed Attacker Azelf. Congratulations!

This round's challenge is Blastoise, a Pokemon known for being UU's most common spinner. What other roles or niches can Blastoise fill?

Ok a little bit of a joke set, but I was thinking blastoise gets aqua ring, rain dish, rain dance refresh and iron defense. There isn't an attack on the set, but skull bash raises defense and attacks.
Blastoise@leftovers
Trait: rain dish
Evs: 200hp/100att/152def
Adamant nature
-refresh
-skull bash
-rain dance
-aqua ring

Blastoise has such a shallow move pool the only thing I can think of legitimately is putting smack down on the normal set to hit zapdos, go into a ground type for the incoming t bolt and earthquake the sucker, or you could run mud sport... Not much you can do.

Blastoise@leftovers
Trait: Torrent
Evs: 252hp/252def/4spatt
Modest Nature
-mud sport
-scald
-ice beam
-rapid spin
Sub cm raikou does 25-30% to modest blastoise, in muddy water where's as blastoise does 25-30% back with scald with a chance for a burn to increase damage. Offensive life orb Zapdocan only 3hko blastoise after rocks where as this blastoise set 2hkoes zapdos after rocks. So if you want to fuck with a friend who uses raikou/zapdos, this is the way to do it.
Note: if zapdos runs hp grass like, likewise with raikou then they can 2hko you.

Screw it, I've been wanting to try this set for a while now:

MegaBlastoise @ Choice Specs
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Modest Nature
- Water Spout
- Hydro Pump/Rapid Spin
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Grass/Rapid Spin

Sounds retarded to use such a defensive Pokemon as a special wallbreaker with a modest (No pun here) base 85 SpA stat. The reason behind the speed investment on this set is it utilizes Blastoise's base 78 Speed (For a defensive Pokemon, this is actually pretty fast) to hit 255. This allows it to outspeed pretty much every wall in the tier without worry, as well as slow, bulky Pokemon ranging from standard Specially Defensive Mew and below. (This also outspeeds unboosted DD Scrafty, a testament to how slow that thing really is). The real big kick this set has, and probably the main niche for it is access to a ridiculously POWERFUL STAB Water Spout move that is going to literally 2HKO a majority of the walls this Pokemon can outspeed at a high range of HP.

Granted, Water Spout isn't the world's most reliable move when you factor in hazards, possibly status, and having to take a hit before retaliating against faster Pokemon. For that reason, Hydro Pump is slashed in the second slot, for a much more reliable damage output. But if you really don't care about that, you could just run Rapid Spin so you still have a bit of utility and a reason to still use Blastoise for your team. Ice Beam and HP Grass form the unresisted Water/Ice/Grass coverage, which is pretty useful in general to have, but if you don't care about opposing bulky waters, you could also run Rapid Spin in the last slot, to once again, maintain some of Blastoise's utility.

The other big draw to this set is some of the Pokemon it lures in; electric-types, grass-types, spinblockers, all can get demolished by the appropriate move, and if you don't believe me, check the calcs (Guess I'll post them at the bottom of the list.) I mean granted you could just use Empoleon since it's got a somewhat-useful Steel typing and higher Special Attack, but it is significantly slower, and doesn't necessarily lure some of the Pokemon Blastoise does. Also no Water Spout lol

sn: If you really would prefer Blastoise having some bulk to its name, you could use an alternative spread of 252 SpA / 68 Spe / 190 HP to allow Blastoise to always outspeed Gligar by one point, since it's mainly the only other wall Blastoise beats one-on-one who outspeeds it without needing to run speed. (Meaning you can actually kill it before it busts out a U-Turn on you). You could also use 252 SpA / 144 Spe / 114 HP to allow Blastoise to get the jump on offensive Nidoqueen and everything else below. If you're aiming to outpace anything else higher, you may as well use 252.

Anyway, calcs:

Most of these first calcs are gonna focus on the more common switch-ins to Blastoise; the others are gonna focus on the walls it beats out.

1. Vs. Roserade:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Roserade: 246-290 (93.89 - 110.68%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

2. Vs. Virizion:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Virizion: 204-242 (62.96 - 74.69%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Gonna skip the other Zapdos sets and jump to a fully specially defensive one; think "Worst-Case Scenario" (However you actually do outspeed SpDef Zapdos if you run max speed Modest, so...lol if that actually happens that you run into it)

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Water Spout vs. 248 HP / 236+ SpD Zapdos: 237-279 (61.87 - 72.84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 236+ SpD Zapdos: 200-236 (52.21 - 61.61%) -- 97.66% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Hydro Pump vs. 248 HP / 236+ SpD Zapdos: 189-223 (49.34 - 58.22%) -- 66.8% chance to 2HKO

5. Vs. Cofagrigus:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Water Spout vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Cofagrigus: 291-343 (91.22 - 107.52%) -- 43.75% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Hydro Pump vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Cofagrigus: 232-274 (72.72 - 85.89%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

6. Vs. Sableye:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Water Spout vs. 252 HP / 136+ SpD Sableye: 324-382 (106.57 - 125.65%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 136+ SpD Sableye: 259-306 (85.19 - 100.65%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Hydro Pump vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mismagius: 232-274 (88.54 - 104.58%) -- 31.25% chance to OHKO

8. Vs. Raikou:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Water Spout vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Raikou: 301-355 (93.47 - 110.24%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Blastoise Hydro Pump vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Raikou: 241-285 (74.84 - 88.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Anyway, I think you guys get the idea on calcs vs. most of its regular switch-ins. I guess for Spinblockers, they'd assume you'd have SR up if you're bringing in Blastoise, so Water Spout may be a smidge weaker. Either way I posted Hydro Pump's output for that specific reason. As far the bulky walls Blastoise can break:

1. Vs. Slowbro:

Okay, I'm done overwhelming you all with calcs...do you get the general idea by now? Lol.

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 216 HP / 252 Def / 40 SpA
IVs: 0 Atk
Bold Nature
Gender: Female
-Attract
-Swagger
-Iron Defense/Ice Beam/Rapid Spin
-Scald/Hydropump

So I guess point of this set is to be as annoying as possible through the use of haxs. 216 HP hits the last Leftovers number, 252 defense for staying power and the rest into SpA cause you'll probably only be doing special attacks. Could still easily use a 252/252/4 spread for a bit more staying power (difference is only 9 HP/9 SpA though). 0 attack IVs cause foul play, although if for some reason you really need rapid spin to do more damage, you can still run it at 31 I guess. Gender is female because generally most Pokemon are male by default and hence why Attract. Obviously it's not really an all that reliable move cause there are female only pokemon and genderless pokemon, but it'd be good in dealing with switch ins to Blastoise. Swagger is there for additional haxs, since together with attract, means 50% chance to hit itself and another 25% chance not to do anything due to attract. After that, you can just up your defense with Iron Defense so that if they do manage to hit you, it won't be as bad. If you happen to have a paralysis support on your team you could probs just run Ice Beam over Iron Defense, since that'd give you an additional 12.5% of them not doing anything. You could also run rapid spin instead of ice beam/iron defense so you still have a spinner and not make blastoise totally useless in places where Attract + Swagger would be totally useless (which is obviously totally possible). Scald is what I'd run if you aren't running paralysis suppport. Yes I know that burn, cuts down a pokes Attack power which would defeat the purpose of Swagger, but the advantage of burn is that they are passively losing HP even if they switch out and come back in later. Swagger + Attract is only really used for stalling anyways. If you do have paralysis support though, Hydropump might be a better option.

I'd totally consider this a joke set cause it's generally outclasses by the more reliable Togekiss ParaFlinch, but apart from what Kitty and CoolBroBat posted, I can't really think of any other role/niche it could fill since most of it's other moves are terrible and it's move pool is really shallow. Also I think there's just something inherently hilarious about Blastoise being too sexy for the other pokemon while also having enough swag to make them angry.

OBJECTION! What do you mean I have a weakness now?!

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
- Rain Dance
- Protect/Scald(/Toxic according to CSB)
- Rapid Spin/Scald(/Toxic according to CSB)
- Aqua Ring
Totally theorymoning, but Blastoise would seem like a great abuser of Rain Dish. Rain Dance Plus Aqua Ring Plus Leftovers = 3/16 of its health regained each turn.
this means it becomes that much harder to wittle down. Plus it gets rain up for things like Kingdra.
Rapid Spin is to keep it useful, Scald is to do a little bit of damage, maybe get burn chance
(yeah this sucks but I'm not that creative or smart :C)
EDIT: CoolStoryBrobat says that this set would be good with Toxic, so yeah; I'm going to change it if but it's not my idea, but in case anyone wants to know, lol.

Actually this set is kinda cool imo, I think I attempted something like this when I was starting out...only thing, I honestly feel Toxic is also worthwhile on that set since it's so stally in itself.
