Pokémon Gourgeist

There's a reason why Flame Charge isn't used competitively. I've already addressed this twice now:

It would take 2 wasted turns to get Super Size up to Small form's speed, no opponent is just going to sit there and let you boost for free.

As much as I love our new Pumpkin friends, if you think Trevenant has a horrible movepool you're completely mistaken. Gourgeist is the one with the horrible movepool: Trevenant has Earthquake, Shadow Claw, Horn Leech, Wood Hammer, X-Scissor, and even Poison Jab, and Gourgeist doesn't get any of those moves. If you want a Pokemon with better attacking options and more reliable recovery, Trevenant's the way to go.

However, Gourgeist does have a ton of versatilty, much better physical defenses, and Shadow Sneak for priority. Small forms are much better at utilizing WoW and Leech Seeding. It also packs a potent TR set with Explosion. You should try both and see which strengths are most important for your team!

Edit: myself and others have been testing Egg moves in the research thread, and sadly the most notable moves can't be passed to Gourgeist.

But i had stated above im using the small size Gourgeist obviosly a super size has better moves to work. The smaller one coming off higher base speed could use it its most likely not optimal and pardon me for not flipping back through all th epages to find the moveset that was suggested for a "SMALL" Gourgiest im sorry if i come off as rude but your reply felt so to me ill have to look back and see the seeding and WoW set though i find those interesting

I saw you have said it, but... I still like the idea of the move *shrug* And why wouldn't you run a max Attack form if you were going to use Flame Charge? I don't know. I just like it.

And I have been following that page Shroom, but I haven't seen anyone test for Horn leech yet... Unless I missed it. it should get it from Trevenant. I would if I had either pokemon :(

And Gourgiest is just so much more adorable then Trevenant. You can't beat that.

Well, I guess I should have added " a terrible movepool for the kind of base stats it has". For example, Flareon has a terrible movepool for the kind of stats it has, and Trevenant has the movepool of a swepeer, but not the one of a tank/support poke.

Well, I have the sets in the first post so they are easy to find. Sorry for missing that you're interested in using Flame Charge on small form, I suppose that could work... but it would be incredibly weak and I'm not sure that it would be worth a moveslot. You're more than welcome to experiment with it and let us know if its useful or not!

That's the truth. I love my grass-types!

I think Horn Leech was one of the earlier moves tried, but if it's not listed there I'll try it myself right now.

Also, you probably would use Flame charge and the super sized form, just large. Sure you lose 5 attack, but you gain 15 speed. And I hope we find that she gets it. I was looking and didn't see it, but I may be blind.

I agree with you there, although Trev gets excellent abilities to make up for his odd stats. Gourgeist wound up with the same stat distribution problem... all these incredible special attacking options like Fire Blast, Focus Blast, Shadow Ball... yet Gourgeist's SpA is awful, it's a shame. Even still, Gourgeist has tons of utility and is just about the cutest tank you could ever ask for.

zferolie , I'll be breeding Horn Leech tonight and I'll update once I get the results!

I wouldn't be too quick to write off Flame Charge. Although it is weak as shit, that's somewhat compensated for with CB Gourgeist-H (incidentally the first set in my preview right now) and it actually has enough power to OHKO Scizor and Genesect and potentially 2HKO even SDef Skarmory if it is slighty weakened. The speed increase also allows you to outrun Skarmory, so you can 2HKO it before it has a chance to Roost. Even if you run SAtk you can't do this with Fire Blast because Skarmory will always be able to Roost before the second hit. That said, it is pretty niche and there are generally other moves I'd rather have, like Explosion, so I haven't mentioned it in the set and will only mention it briefly in the comments if at all.
Speaking of Gourgeist-H's preview (H stands for Huge, if anyone is wondering what the Smogon nomenclature for this thing is), it's here and I would appreciate you guys weighing in with anything you think I forgot or that ought to be mentioned. I'm actually pretty impressed by what this thing can do, there's basically nothing outside of Heatran that comfortably switches in on banded Gourgeist and doesn't mind getting hit by a Will-o-Wisp on the way in.

What about a Weakness Policy set? Gourgeist has weaknesses to some fairly common attacking types to ensure it activates, and its Large and Huge forms have enough bulk to survive such a hit. This could work well with large form in particular, since Flame Charge can also bring it up to a high speed, allowing for some decent sweeping potential with Seed Bomb, Shadow Sneak, and Rock Slide/Explosion. Super-Size Gourgeist is, sadly, too slow to benefit from Flame Charge (it requires two boosts to reach a threatening speed) but could potentially make a powerful tank with Explosion/Rock Slide instead of Flame Charge.

i honestly agree that its pretty niche for flame charge but at small i honestly dont know how strong it would get im sure there has to be somethign better but off the top of my head it helps speed and gives coverage i wis it got some differant moves cuz its a rather cool mon

As promised: Just tested and Gourgeist does NOT learn Forest's Curse, Wood Hammer, or Horn Leech from Trevenant via Egg, only Destiny Bond. Sorry zferolie !

Aww, I was hoping to write up a Gourgeist analysis. Ah well, I'll certainly be happy to weigh in on it.

As for CB Gourgeist-H (why Gourgeist-H? Gourgeist-Super is too long? lol), I still don't get Flame Charge. Yes, it lets you hit Scizor for (87.46 - 103.79%) which is in 93% OHKO, but at what cost? You're locking yourself in to a horribly weak move and your opponent will be guaranteed a turn to set up. Any size Gourgeist can run Fire Blast and do the same thing with less investment and no Choice item necessary. Smaller Gourgeist forms also outrun these guys to begin with. I realize there is some usefulness there, but really, is it worth it?

CB Super Size Gourgeist is an interesting idea though, one I haven't listed on the OP due to its limited options. I suppose a Seed Bomb / Shadow Sneak / Rock Slide / Explosion set would be best?

Well, sizes small to large are still available :P. I wouldn't minding writing up small but I mean if you want it go for it.
As for the moveset, I went for Phantom Force over Rock Slide since Rock Slide doesn't hit anything useful and Phantom Force OHKOs 252 HP Jirachi/Celebi. Trick is also worth consideration over Explosion if you need Gourgeist to spinblock.
CB lets you beat starmie though, which is pretty nice. That said, the defensive set I 'came up with' is bulkier than Skarmory on both sides of the spectrum, so Gourgeist looks to have a pretty nice niche carved out for itself.

Well that sounds interesting, I'll gladly write up small Gourgeist, will be nice to get my first piece in C&C! I'll go take a look at your analysis over there and drop off some thoughts. I agree that Gourgeist's amazing physical bulk and typing combine to make it a solid choice.

Aw shucks. Well, that rulls out the Assault vest one. Without a steady healing move Assault vest is not a great item. Can it get Giga Drain? I mean, I know it doesn't go well with it's special attack, but at least it's a healing move. I doubt it can get Drain Punch.

Hmm, I wonder if a Curse set is viable with her... If she can be bred Mean look and Curse. Maybe...

/Leftovers
Mean Look
Curse
Leech Seed
Shadow Sneak

Does she have the bulk to pull it off?

Sorry if this has already been addressed, don't have time to check at the moment, but why are all sizes but normal banned? I was told by a friend that they are blanketed as illegal in every tier right now.

im trying to figure shadow sneak or phantom force most normmal types dont liek delaing with a sub seed so even walling it wouldnt really zolve their problem aside from Pyroar who has fire to hit it and normal typing to wall it

Why is there so much fighting between Trevenant and Gourgeist? Trevenant is a better offensive pokemon but Large/SuperPumpkins can do pretty good damage against the Tree with ShadowSneak. On the flip side Trevenant has more variety for an offensive set and is blessed with Harvest to abuse berries.

The way it seems overall though Trevenant is what you will want on Offense with Gourgeist being your Supporter because they play those roles better than the other.

So, in regards to team mate options.

I run sticky web on my team which allows me to move up from small gourgeist to the regular sized one for a sub-seeding set. And a flash fire user to soak up the inevitable fire blasts thrown at Gourgeist and Galvantula really helps. I'm thinking maybe Heatran? Last gen it would be a no-brainer since Heatran would resist ghost attacks as well, but this gen I'm not so sure. I suppose if one wanted to run mega Houndoom, these two would really help it out in giving it nice switch ins and sticky web support. Any other thoughts?

Has anybody got a small female Pumpkaboo they would be able to trade? I'm trying to begin breeding so I might be able to test a few of these move sets out.

I just bred a Pumkaboo with a Duskclops to see if it gets Curse but it happened to get Trick. Its the small Pumpkaboo so maybe it can be a Viable Choice tricker.

Well, I totally didnt see that in the OP.

So it can't do a curse set either huh? Man, I love her, but you don't have too many options.

lmfao just used the standard Support-Pumpkin in a mock-NU battle on showdown with a friend. We used a mix of 6th gen pokes and b/w NU.
My team: Gourgeist, Probopass, Mega-Kang, Ampharos, Clawitzer, and Diggersby
His team: Carbink, Gabite, Dodrio, Kabutops, Skuntank, and Butterfree.

Now my friend mainly does OU while I do NU but I didnt expect to 6-0 him when the whole match I was only using Gourgeist and Probopass (got 1 kill with Diggersby, didnt even use the other guys). Running this set which has appeared many times on this thread I was able to predict around his team. Gourgeist was easily the star of the show!

Super-sized Pumpkin
Insomnia Leftovers
Careful 252hp 252spdef 4att
-Leech Seed
-Wil o Wisp
-Seed Bomb
-Shadow Sneak

I could not have asked for a better support set that worked so well with another defensive poke (Probopass)

Why Insomnia? You're already immune to all spore and powder moves because you are grass type, and Hypnosis sucks. Being able to scout opposing pokemon's items is much better.
