I like my Sub Pataya Set, it caughts people of guard.

Greninja@Pataya Berry
Ability: Protean
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Substitute

I am not taking the advantage of getting that great of a coverage. The moves just need to hit hard, if they hit. Dark is easierst to Spam and Water is the most Powerful. I am thinking about changing Ice Beam just for coverage...but not sure what I could add instead though. It is pretty much walled by Azumarill and Water/Dark typs like Mega-Gyarados.

This set is kinda bad tbh. Greninja's protean makes him normal type when you sub, which is a bad defensive typing, coupled with Greninja's natural poor bulk, your sub will not last long. Why bother hiding behind a sub when you can outspeed and smack half of the OU metagame with a STAB SE attack taht OHKO's or 2HKO's?

And one of the good things about Greninja is having 4 STAB coverage, and not taking advantage of that is kinda silly :P

With a set like that subs aren't really supposed to be tanking hits. They would either be used to ease prediction on a swtich or to sub down to the Petaya Berry and put in a sweep.

Protean does not change your type if you do not use a damaging attack. Sub iisn't a bad idea, either, as it allows you to put more pressure on or sub when they switch in a counter/check adn possibly ko it thanks to your extra turn, especially if they are faster.

Do I miss any important KO's if I run Expert Belt as opposed to Life Orb? I seriously hate the recoil from that thing.
252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tyranitar in Sand: 174-211 (43 - 52.2%) -- 98% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Expert Belt Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tyranitar in Sand: 161-194 (39.8 - 48%) -- 53.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
I'd say it's pretty important to nearly secure the 2HKO on AV Tyranitar

Is it really that common? I don't think I've encountered a non-mega Ttar yet (I'm low on the ladder and I can't play as often as I want).

You're gonna have to live with it, because non-LO/Specs Greninja hits pathetically weak. Greninja isn't really meant to stay on the field too much and when it already dies from its own recoil, then it would have done its job in late-game cleaning or just sweeping offensive teams with its super neat coverage.

Use LO, but don't use U-turn alongside LO.

Expert Belt isn't bad. It certainly lets Greninja live a bit longer and doesn't limit it to ten attacks. Life Orb is probably still optimal though.

I'm sorry if this was discussed earlier or the incorrect place to post, but what do you guys consider the most prominent threats/checks/counters to Greninja in this current metagame? My team has 5 secure members, but I have problems with Azumarill and Greninja so I was wondering what everyone thinks really pressures him?

Azumarril itself is a great switch in to Greninja. But what could counter both of them? Not much actually; you're looking for a pokemon that isn't 2hko'd by hydro pump or ice beam or dark pulse and also survives CB Play Rough and CB Superpower and +6 Aqua Jet. Uhh... Gyarados?

Well, he can't touch the blobs. Too tired to pull out calcs but is it really necessary?

Rotom-W also handles him pretty nicely, especially if you predict a hydro pump. Rotom also does nicely against azumarill

Greninja is awesome
I run it quite interesting

Greninja @ Kings Rock
Ability: Protean
4HP/252SpA/252Spe
Modest Nature
-Surf
-Dark Pulse
-Ice Beam
-Toxic Spikes

This thing is beast no matter what you say. It hits hard as hell. Toxic Spikes in combination with Protean blocks off 4(!) of its weaknesses, due to it outspeeding soooo many Pokemon of these types. Also look at the opponents face when his Pokemon flinches to Surf or Ice Beam because of Kings Rock. XD

All in all an amazing Pokemon worth using as a Super Special Sweeper ;)

Lishous out

In my personal experiences, I've only seen about 45% of Tyranitar's have a Tyranitarite.

M4:Power-Up Punch

This set is just plain bad. It's been discussed many times, and it isn't good. Water Shuriken is too weak to be used, Shadow Sneak isn't very powerful either. Spikes is ok, but it should be all out attacking, and U-Turn gets rid of any boosts. Power-Up Punch is very gimmicky, and Expert Belt is weaker than Life Orb. And always run a +Speed nature, as with Adamant, you'll miss out on outspeeding Terrakion and other base 108's. Honestly, Physical Greninja is "unique", but it is a huge gimmick and should never be used over Special Greninja, who has better coverage and hits harder.

If you're going to use physical Greninja, you're pretty much forced to run Life Orb and Jolly nature so you get the combination of power and speed. You should also choose between the two priorities because carrying both just makes Greninja too weak. My most successful physical sets have had Waterfall/U-turn/Power-Up Punch/Shadow Sneak and Water Shuriken/Rock Slide/Power-Up Punch/Night Slash. Physical Greninja doesn't seem worth it at this point because of the lack of power. You should probably wait for the next games and the inevitable Move tutors with Ice Punch and such. I do have another Physical Greninja w/ Acrobatics idea right now, but I want to wait until I've tested it before posting because it sounds terrible and interesting at the same time.

Admittedly I haven't used it on the ladder, but in the very early days of XY, when we still didn't know defog was a thing, I was using a banded Greninja with U-Turn/Shadow Sneak/Waterfall/Ice Beam. It worked fairly well, and surprised a lot of the special walls coming in to counter it. Bliss and Chans didn't appreciate taking a banded U-Turn, and Tyranitar appreciated it even less. It kept up momentum fairly well, but it was mostly based on surprise value. While I honestly don't recommend it and think specially based Greninja is better, this is, imo, the strongest physical Greninja.

ummm jellicent fullcounters?? What about dark pulse??
252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Jellicent: 203-242 (50.2 - 59.9%) -- 78.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Jellicent Scald vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 51-60 (17.8 - 20.9%) -- possible 5HKO
4 SpA Jellicent Scald vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Greninja (Pure Dark): 102-120 (35.6 - 41.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Yep. Greninja is a full counter to Jellicent. Most Greninja sets run Dark Pulse anyway, so you should have no trouble fitting it into your moveset.

The OP hasn't been edited in a while, so it's a bit behind. As for counters to Greninja, the blobs are really the only true counters to Greninja.
