The Arsenal
Hello guys, this is my 1st RMT on the forums. The team I present here is a Trick Room team. Trick Room has been one of my favorite strategies since Gen 4, alongside Sun teams. Trick Room is not as expected in X and Y, and most speed based teams get destroyed by my current team. Common moves such as Dragon Dance are generally set up fodder. However, the presence of priority does hurt. I have found Trick Room to be hard to use in the current Meta, mostly because Trick Room (TR) lasts 4 turns as a move, and most users are also weak to pursuit, sucker punch and the omnipresent Aegislash. I happen to also enjoy using this team because by usage, half of the Pokémon are below OU, with Reuniclus being in the RU. This creates a surprise element to the team when playing on the ladder. The team is built around a trick room setter core of Porygon2, Reuniclus, and Chandelure. This is basically a Normal/Psychic/Ghost core but Chandelure has the benefit of resisting fairies, but also has trouble with ground and water types in general. While water types are well handled by Porygon2 and Conkeldurr, ground types are handled well by Landorus - T. The team as a unit considers Landorus -T, the trick room setters, and Mawile as very important members. Conkeldurr is generally a hard hitter, and great late game. However, it generally doesn't play much of a role when the team is played, as Mawile is considered my main sweeper after setting up TR.
I started off with Banette - Mega, thinking that the Prankster+Destiny bond and Will o' Wisp would be great for setting up trick room later on.
However, Banette - Mega proved to be not bulky at all (naturally) and was a case of horrible stat distribution on a Pokemon with a great ability.
With my Mega slot being vacant again, I opted for an offensive threat not weak to pursuit and dark types in general, while accomplishing the same role as Aegislash admirably. Mawile's typing and ability made it a perfect replacement for Aegislash. It was also immune to Dragons and resistant to pursuit as a major plus. Mawile also has larger raw power.
Multiscale Dragonite couldn't cut it out with rocks everywhere and no defogger, but I also didn't have something to set up rocks for me. Also, I had major issues with ground types and Talonflame, which works well in TR. Ferrothorn seemed to fit in.
This time, Ferrothorn's 4x weakness made it unfitting on this team, placing it alongside the fire weakness with Mawile. The move set for Ferro was also a mixed defense set, but I only had a physical issue. With my Heatran troubles, Landrous-T was a perfect replacement for Ferrothorn, and it does its job admirably at the moment.
Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Recover
Porygon2 is an option for me as a lead, because it counters intimidate based leads with trace, and also can set – up trick room right off the bat. It counters a large range of other leads such as Protean Greninja through trace as well, while its Bolt-Beam coverage hits hard a significant portion of the tier. When not used as a lead, Porygon2 is a great wall, and its Eviolite based bulk allows it to take little damage even from super effective attacks, while trace allows the copying of ability based immunities to also gain a free switch in. Porgygon2 has been my most reliable, and so my main trick room setter. It is the crux of the Chandelure – Reuniclus –Porygon2 core, as it is the bulkiest of the three. However, it always an issue to face Knock - off for it because of the buff to it this gen. The general way to play Porygon2, is generally switch into something it can trace the ability of and then gain an immunity through the ability. This can be done with common pokemon such as Heatran, with the flash fire immunity. This way, generally Heatran can either do little damage through Earth Power with the Substitute set. However, SubToxic Heatran can be trouble, and can toxic Porygon2 which is cripples it by making its ability to stay on the scene much shorter. Porygon2 can also switch into Pokemon such as Landorus -T w/o knock off to intimidate them back. In case Landorus -T might contain knock - off, it is generally intimidated via my Landorus -T, or switch out from Porygon2 immediately to Mawile so that knock off has minimum effect, so that Porygon2 can come back on next turn to successfully set up trick room. In case of an incoming fighting type move, Porygon2 can always switch into Chandelure to take the immunity. However, the presence of entry hazards is quite troublesome when using this team because trick room is hard to set up in that environment for both Chandelure and Porygon2.
Reuniclus @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 192 HP / 64 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Shadow Ball
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast
Reuniclus, my second bulkiest setter (after Porygon2), and also a very potent sweeper and wall-breaker after TR is set up. With a handy ability in Magic Guard, it can switch into entry hazards of all sorts with no issue, and so Reuniclus also works as my main status absorber. However, it has bad typing which lowers its abilities to survive a super effective hit. It is generally countered by Scizor, which can destroy Reuniclus with a U – Turn/Bug Bite if it doesn’t carry pursuit (most haven’t until this point). Reuniclus is the slowest Pokemon on team, and is also an extremely slow Pokemon in general. Therefore, it has rarely moved second under TR, making it very effective after setting up. Also, Reuniclus is a great asset to set up Trick Room under when it has the opportunity to switch into a resisted fighting/psychic type move, tank a shadow ball/knock off, and then proceed to set up trick room. Shadow ball tanking is generally preferred from opposing psychic types such as Latias, since Reuniclus can't survive shadow ball from threats such as Aegislash. Reuniclus also hates taking knock - off from Bisharp. It can't take a sucker punch, but can set TR safely on the predicted sucker punch turn and then switch out to Conkeldurr to destroy Bisharp.
Chandelure @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Energy Ball
- Trick Room
- Overheat
- Shadow Ball
Chandelure is a rather weird setter, it is not very bulky, has very common weaknesses to ground, water, dark and ghost. However, it hits like a truck with the quiet nature. It is great when entry hazards are not set up, and after setting up trick room it is very effective. It can also freely switch in on any of the fighting type moves which are targeted at Porygon2, and also take the bug type moves for Reuniclus. Chandelure also has good synergy with Landorus – T, because it can switch into an Ice type attack, while the Landorus – T is immune to the ground type attacks it fears. Chandelure is best used to set up TR late game, when people don't expect it to set the move and just try to sweep as a revenge killer. Therefore, it gains many moments of surprise sets late game, and can set up trick room and immediately start destroying a large amount of Pokemon due to its high special attack stat. With the ghost buff this gen, most Pokemon will receive high damage from Shadow ball. The only pokemon which wall it outright are Blissey, Chansey and Goodra. Venusaur - Mega is also very troublesome, but it can generally be taken out by Reuniclus. However, it is hard to safely switch Reuniclus in against Venusaur.
Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Play Rough
- Fire Fang
Mawile is my main sweeper. It is absolutely devastating if it gets 3 turns of TR. With the adamant nature, Mawile has maximum attack, and the fire fang on it takes out predicted switches to Ferrothorn, and causes significant damage to Aegislash as well. Mawile also has Sucker punch so it is not entire useless outside of TR, and can also counter priority in Trick Room. Hence, I have also not placed a negative speed nature, or brave, because it can speed tie with other Mawile. All in all, Mawile has a great offensive presence, and OHKO a large part of the metagame which is favorable under TR. Fire Fang is kept on Mawile for a surprise KO to Ferrothorn/Scizor, because they would otherwise be great threats to this team, with Scizor being a great pursuit trapper and Ferrothorn taking little damage from everything except for Chandelure, which I like to pull out late game.
Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- Ice Punch
My second physical sweeper, and also a great status absorber. It does well to absorb the burns for Mawile to get the guts boost. With the assault vest, it also can tank a few special hits. In TR, Conkeldurr destroys a great number of Pokemon. It can bluff Drain punch on Aegislash and then Knock-off for a great amount of damage. Drain punch also helps it recover a lot of HP. Garchomp and Landorus both are OHKOed by Ice punch. However, Mega Venesaur, however, completely walls Conkeldurr, but Reuniclus/Chandelure can take care of it.
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Rock Slide
The last Pokémon to be added to the team, it is great as a lead and sponges physical hits, including super – effective ones. It is my main Heatran counter, and also can function as a lead in a manner similar to Porygon2. It also sets up stealth rock, which breaks focus sashes and sturdy which are also quite a pain to face with a maximum 4 turns to sweep in TR. Landorus can also be a great pivot, U – Turning when it is a check to bring in a counter. It works very well with Chandelure.
The team has been enjoyable to use so far, but I would like to get it rated because I feel like it can most certainly be improved, and the smallest of changes could greatly benefit it. Thank you.

Aegislash: I have difficulty taking it down since it can work well within TR, and also has the ghost typing. Porygon2 can't hit it hard either even though it is immune to ghost, and Aegislash can Secret sword Porygon2.
Talonflame: Landorus-T was introduced as a counter to this, and does fairly well. Without Landorus-T, it wrecks the entire team.
Breloom: The sash variant can be taken down easily, but is very troublesome if rocks aren't set up. Reuniclus can take it out but fears spore. Nothing on my team can take the spore/
