Scyther [QC 0/3]

completing it today (monday, 25th). Don't lock it please
Overview
########
  • Good attack and speed stat along with access to swords dance allow it to function as a good late game sweeper
  • Technician gives it two decently powered STAB moves in Bug Bite and Aerial Ace and a pseudo STABed priority in Quick Attack
  • Very frail w/o eviolite while a little lacking in power w/o a boosting item such as LO if not already boosted
  • Horrible typing both offensively and defensively. a lot of common weaknesses as well as a 4x Stealth Rock weakness. Always needs hazard removal to do its job properly. The Stabs are resisted by some common pokemon. Steel types, rotom.
Swords Dance
########
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Aeriel Ace
move 3: Brick Break / Bug Bite
move 4: Quick Attack
ability: Technician
item: Life Orb
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========
  • Swords Dance doubles Scyther's attack. Scyther can properly utilise it due to its high speed stat.
  • Aeriel Ace is its Flying type stab attack and is boosted by technician.
  • Brick Break hits steel and rock types
  • If you can deal with them, bug bite can be used. t prevents it from getting walled by lanturn and almost always OHKOs Electabuzz unboosted.
  • Quick Attack lets it revenge weakened faster pokemon and scarfers as well as preventing its sweep from being cut short by them.
  • Bug Bite may be used, but it gets walled by steel-types
Set Details
========
  • 252 evs and jolly nature to make it as fast as possible outspeeding the crowded base 90 to base 100 pokemon and tieing with mismagius.
  • 252 atk for power
  • Life Orb provides a much needed boost to power.
  • eviolite may be used. but it misses some kos such as the OHKO on feraligator at +2.
Usage Tips
========
  • don't bring it in if rocks are on the field.
  • don't let it take damage from even weak attacks and use slow volt-turns to bring it in.
  • make sure that opposing revenge killers and faster threats have been weakened enough to be picked off with Quick attack before setting up. make use of damage calculator.
  • don't setup if opposing physical walls have not yet been worn down.
  • setup on something that is harmless, such as cb sawk locked into close combat, or something that scyther forces out. such as fighting and grass types.
Team Options
========
  • Hazard control is a must when using scyther. Sandslash has good synergy with scyther. Can also wear down rock and steels with stab earthquake. Togetic can provide heal bell support and slow baton pass too.
  • scyther appreciates slow volt switch and u-turn users to get in safely. Probopass and lanturn have good synergy with scyther. Magnet Pull Probopass is a great teammate as it can trap and eliminate bulky steel-types who give scyther problems. Lanturn can switch into electric, flying, fire and ice type attacks aimed at Scyther.
  • fighting types can take on the rock and steel types who love to come into scyther. they attract pokemon like vileplume, on which scyther can set up.
  • scyther loves hazard support. Rhydon, probopass, sandslash, seismitoss can set up rocks, while omastar, accelgor and qwilphish can set spikes.
Other Options
########
  • bulky sd
  • roost, knock off, brick break
  • choice band
  • scarf
Checks & Counters
########

**Stealth Rock**: Due to its quadruple weakness to Stealth Rock, Scyther can be easily kept in check if rocks are on its side of the field.

**Steel-types**: Ferroseed can take even a +2 brick break and cripple it with thunder wave. Klinklang can beat it one-on-one if it has not already boosted or ko it with gear grind, with a little prior damage. Should be wary of switching into brick break.

**Physical Walls**: Rhydon, seismitoad, ferroseed, granbull can take any hit and cripple it in return. Rhydon can KO with rock stab, seismitoad can scald (#broken), ferroseed can cripple it with thunderwave or can 2hko with gyro ball after 2 turns of lo and iron barb damage. granbull can cripple it with thunder wave and has a very high chance to 2hko with play rough.

**Faster Threats and Scarfers**: Faster pokemon such as Pyroar, Swellow, archeops and tauros can revenge kill it with their respective attack of choice. Though pyroar can be KOed by a +2 quick attack after one time stealth rock+spikes damage and swellow is always ohkoed after rocks. Similarly, Choice Scarf users, such as Rotom-forme can revenge kill it.

**Offensive Pressure**: Due to its bad bulk, Scyther can be kept in check with constant offensive pressure and not letting it setup a swords dance.

I think quick attack should be slashed with either baton pass but more importantly roost which is part of what makes scyther such a pain to deal with.
Also, eviolite is probably better than life orb since that extra bulk let's you get up extra swords dances and is therefore more of a threat. (Ik you stated life orb ohko gatr whereas evio doesn't but eviolite let's you setup on common walls)

Agreeing that roost is viable. Gonna slash it with Quick Attack. However, I am not sure about BP. Scyther is supposed to set up only when its c&c have been taken care of. Faster threats who would force it out kill it most of the time before it passes to a teammate and most of its defensive checks are hazard setters making its life harder. As for eviolite, the extra bulk is nice but its typing lets it down and from my experience defensive pokemon would just status it making it almost useless. If you still think its viable though, then please let me know.

I think Knock Off might deserve better than OO. Also, maybe consider doing a bulky Eviolite SD set because holy mother of god Scyther becomes so bulky while maintaining very high speed.

tbh I don't think LO SD is worth more than OO mention. Eviolite just seems so much better to me because then it actually has bulk to set up and then take priority hits l8r on

also is CB worth it? haven't used it, but it sounds fun.

Kay. Perhaps, i did not use it well. I will need to use eviolite set a little before i post it, and that might take unnecessary time. :( So, this should be better done by someboy else who has experience with the eviolite set. Sorry, for wasting everybody's time. ;-; Though, i can still do this if nobody is interested, but that will have to wait at least 3 or 4 days, if that's OK.
EDIT : I am gonna do it.

CB seemed pretty decent from the times I've seen it in the past. Tagging Aladyyn because I'm like 95% sure he has used one before lol.
Eviolite over LO, as scyther actually gets a pretty decent typing match up vs a few things and its surprisingly bulky so it can usually set up a couple of SDs. The set you have now is pretty similar to what the SD eviolite set should look like, ill repost in the morning when I'm on a computer with a set I personally like.

ye CB is good, something like this:

Choice Band
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: U-Turn
move 2: Aerial Ace
move 3: Knock Off / Brick Break
move 4: Pursuit
ability: Technician
item: Choice Band
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

With like Bug Bite mentionned in Moves. Really cool Pokemon on voltturn teams

I also agree that bulky evio SD > LO SD, something like this:

Swords Dance
########
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Roost
move 3: Aerial Ace
move 4: Bug Bite / Knock Off
ability: Technician
item: Eviolite
evs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Bulky SD @ Eviolite is def good though I personally never really liked coverage on it since Bug Bite hits nothing and an uninvested Knock Off is piss weak (though it's at least somewhat useful cause it whacks Rotom and removes Lefties / Eviolites). I've been testing BP in that slot so far and it's been pretty good so I'll report later with more stuff

CB is also good from my experiences too n_n

On CB I personally prefer Quick Attack over Pursuit because it's basically STAB priority which is always good to have and I always find non-stab Pursuit pretty meh.

For SD I liked Brick Break a lot, Bug Bite doesn't hit anything and Knock Off gets mostly neutral coverage whereas Brick Break hits stuff like Probopass which is troublesome otherwise (but KO hits Rotom, which is p nice). Baton Pass might deserve a mention, but I didn't like it on the set as much as a second attacking move.

Dropping it sorry. I am gonna be very inactive from tomorrow on due to college and no comp available for some days. And this analysis is larger than what i can edit from a phone. Sorry for wasting everyone's time. :(

Edit : saddest 700th post
