<!This is my first RMT on Smogon! Feedback is greatly appreciated!>
Team-Building Process:
Step 1: I looked through my box and realized I had a Calm Jirachi, decided to build a team around it
Step 2: Garchomp - My team needed a mega
Step 3: Azumarill - Supports Garchomp and serves as a priority attacker
Step 4: Hawlucha - I needed a lead that could serve as a sweeper
Step 5: Ampharos - I realized my lack of special attackers and thought it would help balance the team
Step 6: Dusknoir - Needed another Pokemon, so I chose one from my boxes, i.e. Dusknoir
Team Overview:
This OU team is focused on the maximum output of damage along with preventing the opponents from taking out major threats. Hawlucha serves as the main sweeper, supported by specially defensive wall Jirachi, while physically offensive Garchomp, bulky Azumarill, specially offensive Ampharos, and all-around Dusknoir round out the remainder of the team.
Pokemon:
Jirachi @ Leftovers
Nature: Calm
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 SpD
-Calm Mind (Status)
-Wish (Status)
-Psychic (Psychic STAB)
-Flash Cannon (Steel STAB)
Jirachi’s role on this team is to be both a special wall and a special cleaner. Although it isn’t meant to sweep in the early game, a late switch into Jirachi may spell defeat for the opponent. Jirachi is the main defensive pivot of the team, and even without a boosted Special Defense it can easily take neutral hits and be left with no dents. Jirachi’s plan is to set up two or three Calm Minds, then destroy the opposing team with Psychic and Flash Cannon, while relying on Leftovers and Wish for passive recovery. By utilizing Calm Mind, Jirachi proves to be more of a threat than a standard wall alone. JIRACHI HAS BEEN THE STAR OF THE TEAM
Hawlucha @ Power Herb
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252Spd
-Sky Attack (Flying STAB)
-Hi Jump Kick (Fighting STAB)
-Acrobatics (Flying STAB)
-Swords Dance (Status)
Hawlucha frequently serves as this team’s lead against teams that lack major defenses. Since a Hawlucha lead usually forces a switch, it sets up a Swords Dance on turn one, then Sky Attacks turn two. When it uses Sky Attack the Power Herb is used up, activating Unburden, and leaving Hawlucha at a monstrous +2 attack and +2 speed. From there, it can sweep entire teams using Acrobatics, and if truly necessary Hi Jump Kick may be used.
Garchomp @ Garchompite
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
-Dragon Claw (Dragon STAB)
-Earthquake (Ground STAB)
-Rock Slide (Rock)
-Fire Fang (Fire)
Garchomp is this team’s mega. Garchomp can be switched in to protect Jirachi from Fire-type moves, and can mega-evolve to deal massive amounts of damage itself. It is supported by Azumarill, who can switch in to take a super-effective Ice-type move for it, and can respond with a powerful Aqua Jet. Despite its mega having lower base speed, it also gains bulk, which allows it to withstand attacks and fight back with its powerful arsenal.
Azumarill @ Assault Vest
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
-Aqua Jet (Water STAB)
-Waterfall (Water STAB)
-Play Rough (Fairy STAB)
-Superpower (Fighting)
Azumarill is used mostly for supporting offensive role in this team. Its Assault Vest makes it bulkier and its high attack stat allows it to decimate opponents with a priority STAB Aqua Jet. Azumarill is needed to protect Garchomp from Ice- and Dragon-type attacks, and from the switch-in can destroy weakened teams. Its Huge Power ability allows for an extreme output of damage, which is essential to Azumarill’s usefulness.
Ampharos @ Life Orb
Nature: Modest
Ability: Static
EVs: 132 HP / 252 SpA / 124 Spd
-Focus Blast (Fighting)
-Dragon Pulse (Dragon)
-Thunderbolt (Electric STAB)
-Volt Switch (Electric STAB)
Ampharos is an offensive monster, but its shallow move pool prevented it from seeing any use during Black and White. Now, however, Dragon Pulse has joined Ampharos’s arsenal of powerful attacks. With its great special attack stat, Ampharos reaches 193 special attack at level 50. Its role in this team, however, is to take hits like a boss, then reciprocate with twice as much power. Life Orb is the perfect item for such a monster, as Ampharos is enabled to rip apart opposing teams with ease. Since it needs no setup, it can easily switch out to another teammate, or Volt Switch away to safety.
Dusknoir @ Sitrus Berry
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def
-Will-O-Wisp (Status)
-Shadow Sneak (Ghost STAB)
-Earthquake (Ground)
-Power-Up Punch (Fighting)
Dusknoir is extremely bulky with base 135 in both defenses, and despite its low HP stat, it has 100 base attack. This makes Dusknoir a great Pokemon that serves both an offensive and defensive role. It’s ability to set up Power-Up Punch while still being able to effectively use Will-O-Wisp and be bulky makes Dusknoir a great member of a balanced team. In this team, Dusknoir has no defined role, and will basically do whatever job it is needed for.
<NOTE: Dusknoir is not the definite choice for this slot. Suggestions welcome!>
So, that's the team! I've done relatively well, despite having imperfect results!
