XY OU My New OU Team!

Well, this is my first OU RMT. I have had this team for some time now, and it has worked fine for the most part. I still do want feedback on it so I can make changes and improve upon this team.

Teambuilding Process:

I started out by deciding to use a special attacker, and a hazards user. Latios was always a good special attacker in my opinion, as I have used him in various situations. I originally used Life Orb on Latios, but then switched to scarf so I could have more speed overall. Ferrothorn on the other hand is a great hazards user, and also is good by inflicting damage to my opponent via rocky helmet and iron barbs, and still has good defensive bulk. These two have worked well for me in the past, so that is why I decided to use them in this team

Next, I wanted to use a fire type. I decided on Heatran since it has a great use of Roar. Heatran also works well being bulky in special defense, being able to take attacks like Hydro Pump from a Greninja. Its typing is pretty great, considering that it can check various things because of it, but is very weak to ground. Because of its ground weakness, I used Air Balloon as an item for it so it could evade ground type moves and even switch in on an Earthquake.

I then decided on using a physical attacker. My original plan was to have rocks on Landorus-T, and switch Ferrothorn into using spikes, but I then changed my mind since I would need a fast physical attacker instead. I still wanted to keep Landorus-T on my team, so I made it a scarfed attacker. It has worked very well with the speed boost granted with scarf, especially when using U-turn as a good switch move that still inflicts damage.

Since Landorus-T has Intimidate, it made me think about using a sort of Intimidate core on this team. My first though for an Intimidate user was Gyarados, which worked out great since I could also Mega Evolve it. Gyarados serves as a set up sweeper on this team, and after a Dragon Dance, makes good use of its coverage moves.

The last pokemon I added to this team is Zapdos. I originally wanted to use Magnezone for this team, but I then switched to Zapdos after I realized that I did not have a defogger. Zapdos definitely makes great use of Defog, and does not have to go through much trouble using it, as it is immune to Spikes/T-Spikes/Sticky Web. Zapdos is more of an interesting addition to this team because I have never used Zapdos before, but it definitely was worth trying out for this team.

In Depth

latios.gif

Latios (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Surf
- Trick

Scarf Latios definitely is a formidable foe. It allows it to outspeed checks to it like Greninja, and take it on with its attacks. I chose Latios because I wanted a fast special sweeper on my team, and Latios definitely is a great choice. Draco Meteor and Psyshock have always worked as good STAB moves, and Surf works as a coverage move (Heatran needs to be checked). I chose scarf over life orb because I do want more speed over other pokemon so I can be a fast attacker, and it also seems to be more unexpected. Also Trick is nice in the case that I have to stop a set up.

gyarados.gif
gyarados-mega.gif

Gyarados @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang

Gyarados serves as my main physical sweeper, and has always been one of my favorite pokemon to use in OU. I found it to be a great physical sweeper because of the Dragon Dance set up that allows it to sweep, and also Mold Breaker that gives me advantages with moves like Earthquake. Intimidate is always good for an ability, and Mold Breaker gives the advantage of being able to hit Rotom-Wash after an Earthquake. For the nature, I chose to go with Jolly over Adamant, as I always want to have speed over power. Ice Fang is also mainly used to check set up Landorus-Therian and Latios.

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Superpower
- Earthquake
- U-turn

Scarfed Landorus-Therian has always been a great physical attacker. Its move set provides great attacks, and scarf makes it very fast, even making it good for checking Mega Manetric. My main reason for choosing it is that I needed a fast and powerful physical attacker that could make good use of its moves, which is definitely Landorus-Therian. Earthquake and Superpower on it are good as powerful physical moves, while Knock Off is for more coverage. U-turn I obviously chose since it is definitely a great move to use. Again, Jolly over Adamant for this because I prefer speed over power, and also scarf and Jolly enables me to out speed scarf Rotom as well.

ferrothorn.gif

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave

Ferrothorn is a great pokemon to have on a lot of OU teams. I used it because Ferrothorn is probably one of the best users of Stealth Rock, it is good defensive-wise, and it is great against contact moves. It is great to set up Rocks, and because of Helmet and Iron Barbs, I can switch it in on some physical attacks to make my opponent lose a quarter of their health. I decided not to use Gyro Ball because I was running Thunder Wave, so I went with Power Whip, another powerful STAB move for Ferrothorn. The advantage with Thunder Wave is that it can slow down potential threats for my other pokemon, but I don't use Gyro Ball with it since Gyro Ball would be much weaker after. Leech Seed is just good for sapping health overall.

heatran.gif

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Protect
- Roar

Heatran is a great pokemon that I use in most of my teams now. I used it because ts typing is great, and it makes good use of a counter to various other pokemon. Since it would be an OHKO for it from an Earthquake, I decided to use Air Balloon on it. Air Balloon does provide temporary safety from ground-type moves, and it lets me switch in on them too. As for its moves, Lava Plume I use as a basic STAB move, which I use over Flamethrower because of the increased burn chance. Toxic is great for setting a timer for walls or potentially dangerous sweepers. As for Roar, it is great for making set ups and Sub users switch. Heatran's EV set allows it to survive hits from users like Greninja and Rotom-Wash (both with Hydro Pump).

zapdos.gif

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave
- Defog
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Last, but not least, we have Zapdos. For my final pokemon on this team, I did want an electric type, and originally went with Magnezone until I realized that I had no use of defog. I didn't want hazards to be an issue, but still wanted an electric type, so I went with Zapdos. Zapdos does work well as a Defogger, (Sticky Web isn't an issue for this team, but screens can be) as it is reasonably fast, and is only affected by rocks, giving it the advantage of clearing hazards without any effects from the others. As for its moveset, Thunderbolt is an obvious option for a STAB move, as Heat Wave and HP Ice are for coverage. (Heat Wave can be a good check for Scizors as well)

Threats
Rotom-Wash:
rotom-wash.gif

As my Mega Gyarados can hit it with an Earthquake thanks to Mold Breaker, the problem is that Will-O-Wisp could still go through, and render Mega Gyarados useless. (if they are using a physically defensive) Heatran could always work to counter the Will-O-Wisp, but the problem there is that there is Hydro Pump.

Mega Charizard-X:
charizard-megax.gif

Sub and Dragon Dance can really do a lot if I don't have Mega Gyarados out yet. Latios can out speed it due to scarf and Draco Meteor, but if it already Dragon Danced before, it could take me out after I break the sub. Heatran could also Roar away Charizard-X, but there always is the case when the air balloon pops and Heatran becomes open for an Earthquake.

Edited
I got helpful suggestions from Hairy Toenail in the comments below, and decided to apply them to my team. The below section will show what in the team changed.

Life Orb Latios > Scarf Latios
Does more damage to offensive teams, and opens a Defog slot.

Landorus-Therian Stone Edge > Landorus-Therian Superpower
Makes the Edge-Quake combo and is great as another check for Birds. Also a 24 HP/252 Atk/232 Spe EV spread so it can still outspeed +1 Adamant Charizard X (a threat) while still giving it a little bit of more bulk.

Heatran Taunt and Protect/Roar w/ Leftovers > Heatran Protect and Roar w/ Air Balloon
Taunt would be better against Calm Mind Clefable sets, which then allows it to do damage on it with Lava Plume

Magnezone > Zapdos
Since Latios is now the defogger of this team, Magnezone can now be used instead of Zapdos. Magnet Pull can trap pokemon like Ferrothorn and Skarmory, then K.O. them while doing so.

Hey Raymond, solid team you got man. I have a few suggestions that I think could improve the quality of your team.
  • First suggestion is gonna be Stone Edge on Landorus. Stone Edge completes the Edge-Quake combo and isn't resisted by many mons in the tier. Also gives you another check to Bird Spam which looks like it could give you some trouble which sounds odd given you have a Zapdos and a Heatran, but neither of them have recovery on your team so they are easily worn down. Probably gonna rec Stone Edge over Superpower so you can deal with Mew easier with Knock Off. Optional spread you can have is 24 hp/252 atk/232 speed which outspeeds Jolly Scarf Excadril and Adamant Zard X at +1 while giving you a bit of extra bulk.
  • Next up Life Orb > Scarf on Latios. You already have one scarfer in Landorus-T which is arguably the best scarfer in the tier atm and Life Orb Latios just dents offensive teams like crazy. Also, in doing this you get access to Defog which then allows you to run Magnezone over Zapdos in your last slot
  • As I said in the previous statement if you do chose to run LO Latios, Magnezone > Zapdos is a good choice as that allows you to trap mons like Ferro and Skarm which opens up big windows for Gyara to sweep. You have 2 main choices for zone really being scarf and specs; scarf is another good check to bird spam as Zone's typing quad resists flying and specs just hits unbelievably hard. Up to you which to pick.
  • Lastly I notice that you have a bit of a CM Clefable weakness on your team so Taunt > Roar/Protect on Tran would be a good fit imo. Taunt Tran shuts down all relevant CM Clef sets and you can chip away at it with lava plume or burn something on the switch. Leftovers would also be good on your tran as Spdef variants tend to enjoy the passive recovery.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions! I did need feedback on the team, so thanks for replying. I do see the effectiveness of Magnezone in this team, so I will use the scarfed one. Life Orb Latios would be better for damage (maybe not as fast, but still could use defog). The only thing I'm skeptical about is Heatran's item. I can't really decide between Air Balloon and Leftovers. Air Balloon provides the ground immunity, while leftovers would give it some extra HP over time, but I don't know which will be more efficient for me. As for Landorus, the Stone Edge suggestion I also thought was great too.
