Other Omega Ruby - Post Game

Well, here I go.

This is my first post on the Smogon forums, but am no stranger to the website. I figured I'd join up and try to get my gear into the competitive side of Pokemon.

I've been out of the game since X/Y got released due to me disliking the new "Mega Evolutions" and what not. But fret not, my girlfriend recently dragged me from the abyss into the Light once more. I have some Pokemon fanatic friends, but I feel my team could use some serious criticism. Anyways ... Let's dig right in shall we?

With this team, I've got no idea where they'd fit on the Tier list, so kind of put it as Other. If anyone can help determine, I'd love that.

Also, keep in mind something when reading this post. I've got ADHD. So, my mind will not allow two of the same types on the same team. So no two Fire, no two Dragons ... I hope you understand what I mean.

First off, we have a favorite of mine since Gen 3
Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
- Earthquake
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Ice Punch

My reasons for choosing this beauty is quite simple actually. First of all, he's a Steel-type, which is immune to one of the most dangerous status ailments out there, Poison. Second of all, he checks Fairy-Types with his steel-typing. Then we have Earthquake to tear into nearly any Fire-type that comes his way. Meteor Mash and Zen Headbutt are main STAB moves while Ice punch gets rid of them pesky Dragons.

Up next, the only Gen 6 Poke on this team.

Talonflame @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Roost
- Flare Blitz
- U-turn
- Brave Bird

I'm still unsure if I really want to keep Talonflame, but for the most part he's alright. My reason for using him is to check Fighting, Bug, Steel or even Ice types that come my way. Life Orb + Brave Bird is a dangerous combo and I've seen that first hand. The U-Turn pretty much lets me swap Talon out into something to either take a hit or something to KO whatever could KO Talon.

Another Gen 3, Sableye.

Sableye @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Dark Pulse
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover

Sableye is a weird one to me. One of the few Pokemon that have no straight up weakness. So, I'm taking advantage of that with his moves. We have the Stab Dark Pule + Calm Mind. Now, if you don't resist DP after a couple Calm Minds, you're gonna have a bad time. Will-O-Wisp is there to either prevent Toxic Orbs from going off or just to get that -1 ATK. Recover, do I have to explain that?

Next, the newest addition to this team, Wigglytuff.

Wigglytuff @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Hyper Voice
- Dazzling Gleam

With Wigglytuff becoming a Fairy in X/Y, it gave me a reason to put it on this team. Fairy checks Dragons which is what I've seen a lot of in this game. Wish and Protect are mainly to stall out and either burn or heal then swap into whomever is needed at the time. Hyper Voice and Dazzling Gleam are two STAB moves that hit decently hard.

Now, we have a Gen 4 Poke in the form of Rotom-W.

Rotom-Wash @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Thunder Wave
- Dark Pulse

This set came from a friend of mine who's involved in the game. I've seen many Rotom-W builds but this one suits me fine. With a hefty HP and SpA, Rotom is a tank. Hydro Pump hits hard with a STAB on top of that huge damage. Volt Switch is to switch out to something better. T-Wave .. oh how I love it. 50% chance of being unable to attack. It's love. Anyways, D. Pulse .. how to explain. It's just .. I guess a slot filler and hits hard, just not as hard as H. Pump.

Now, we have the last member of this team, Garchomp.

Garchomp @ Choice Band
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Dragon Claw

We all know and love Garchomp. Some more then others, but to me. He's a beast. Rough Skin hurts any Physical attackers so it makes Ice Punch risky late game. Fire Blast gets rid of them pesky Ice Types before they can hopefully do no damage. EQ for a STAB 100 Power/100 Acc move. It's gonna hurt. Rock Slide to take care of any flying types that could be in my way and last but not least, Dragon Claw. Not really sure what to say about it honestly.

You need to clearly state what metagame you intend this team to play in. Just by saying OR post game doesn't tell us much. If you're playing against AI, then that really isn't "competitive". If you wish to play on the Battle Spot ladder, then you need to tell us exactly which format you intend to play.

I feel like this team would best fit in OU if you swapped Wigglytuff for Sylveon. Also a few problems:
-Metagross has no nature (go with Jolly)
-Sableye is already pretty bulky, it doesn't need a Focus Sash.
-Scarf Rotom isn't that good atm imo, you could switch to a defensive set. If you're really set in Scarf Rotoms, I'd replace Dark Pulse and Thunder Wave with Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Ice or Trick.

I plan to take this to the competitive once I learn a bit more in the game.

I would put Sylveon if it was dual type. Yeah, I know it's a Fairy, but I have this thing where my team has to be dual types for that more coverage I guess.

What would you suggest I put on Sableye then?

As for the move set, I'll set that up now.

So OU? Or perhaps Battle Spot singles?

Assuming you're playing OU, Wigglytuff is simply unviable. Even if you dislike Sylveon, there are plenty of dual type Fairies that'll do better than Wigglytuff. Diancie, Azumarill, Gardevoir, Klefki, Togekiss or even Whimsicott are better choices.

Plus, Smogon is a place to be competitive, and letting unreasonable and irrational personal preferences get in the way of building an optimal team really isn't the best way to be competitive.

Leftovers on Sableye. It also has a Fairy weakness. Sableye doesn't really have the bulk or the power to pull off a successful Calm Mind set (50/75/65 bulk is pretty terrible, a 65/60 special attacking stat isn't much better), unless if you Mega Evolve it but that's a whole other team. I think it's best to stick with standard set of Taunt / Will-O-Wisp / Recover / Knock Off.

Rotom-W is a balanced mixture of offense and defense (like you said, it's a Tank). And for a Tank, reliable recovery is very important. Scarf Rotom-W is bad in this regard because it forgoes recovery for a weak coverage move that doesn't land any notable KOs on its checks and counters. You should be running either Leftovers + Pain Split or Rest and Chesto Berry.

The speed creep is not kind to Garchomp. Back in Gen IV or even Gen V, base 103 Speed was pretty good to outspeed a lot of the base 100's. But in today's meta it's pretty mediocre. Choice Band really isn't a viable set for Garchomp anymore. You are probably better off with a Choice Scarf version as the better hit and runner or simply just use Swords Dance set to clean up when faster threats are eliminated.

Not sure what the 4 SpA is doing on Talonflame, a purely physical attacking set. On an offensive set with LO, you should probably run max Phys. Atk investment.

Anyway, that was just some of the obvious issues. If you take this to the OU subforum, they should be able to tell you more about synergies and threat coverage. But I doubt they can do much if you cannot overcome your self-imposed handicap on team building.
