Hello people, I haven't posted on here for a very long time because of uni and stuff, but I thought I'd come back to Pokémon for the first time in ages!
Bit of background as to why I chose the core I did; I used to run a Bulky offense M-Gyarados team and an offensive M-Alakazam team (obviously two different) and I thought, why not just put them together?
I thought I'd like my team to be Offensive, but I still wanted some bulk in it. Also, because I have both Gyarados and Alakazam which are both good in regular and Mega forms so nobody knows which one is which!
Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 88 HP / 220 Atk / 4 Def / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Bounce
- Waterfall
- Substitute
Like I said, I wanted to create a team around DD Gyarados and MegaZam. You'll see in this team that I don't have major physical bulk, so after originally going for the 252/252 I thought I'd go to the Bulky Gyarados as it gives me slightly less pressure on the physical side. The set is the pretty simple DD/Sub and double STAB as it just works and I have nothing specific to hit that I can think of.
Alakazam-Mega @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Encore
My other member of the core is a speedy M-Zam as my team has no scarfer and little priority. It's primarily used as a revenge killer and a cleaner upper in the end game. Again, the set is somewhat simple, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it. I normally do like to have sets which are obvious, but I just think the core works very well and not very many things can easily stop them.
Encore is used for Bisharp and stall. Bisharp for the Sucker Punch/Pursuit mind games, it doesn't always work out, but I'd rather that than miss a Focus Blast, which I only use if I need to.
Raikou @ Assault Vest
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 16 SpD / 240 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Shadow Ball
Although people always say it's "bad" (compared to other fast Electric types), I felt like Raikou is a perfect mon for this team right now, I know how to use it well and bluff the choiced item, I like it's 115 Speed stat to get some crucial revenge kills etc. And I like how it's one of the best AV users in my opinion.
EV's aren't the usual 252/252, as the only other major thing that is a base 115 is Starmie, and that mostly does Rapid Spin and Scald, which isn't a big threat to Raikou, so I gave the SpD some points, to make it slightly bulkier and still outspeed Timid Serperior. Again, the moves are pretty standard though.
Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Stealth Rock
So I knew that I needed a strong Rocker on the team, which wasn't completely passive and could still deal a bunch of hurt to anything that wants to switch in on it. Seeing how my team is already very fast I thought I'd change the standard Timid to Modest as I wanted extra power and it's likely that the things Timid hits that this can't can easily be cleaned up by the other faster mons.
This team is quite weak to SD and Banded Talonflame, so I'm tempted to put Ancientpower or Stone Edge on this in place of Earth power, but for now, I've kept the moves standard (oh what a surprise!)
Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 236 SpD / 20 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch
- Poison Jab
Another AV user, so my Special side has more switchin opportunities, and I noticed I was weak to Weavile and Bisharp which have a fighting type move. Conk was the perfect mon for this because I needed something which can absorb status and can fight back very hard. Plus a bulky mon is always good when this team is quite weak defensively.
I'm thinking that Poison Jab could be changed to Knock Off but then I only have Heatran's Flash Cannon for Fairies, and If I miss out on Ice Punch, I'm very weak to Scarf Lando-T.
Latios @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Defog
Notice something missing from the team? A good Defogger, and that's why I chose Latios, I used to run a Healing Wish Latias on another one of my teams, and while that really could work on this team, I thought the offensive pressure of Latios would be to better effect.
Again, the set is pretty much the standard set and if I find a specific threat which I struggle with, I can change a certain move on a certain mon!
I guess the team is pretty easy to predict, but it's effective. I'd like a bit more diversity, but only if it actually works.
I haven't done a whole lot of testing with this team, and I've only got to about 15/1600's with it, I think it has a lot of potential. It's very quick, it's very strong, it's somewhat bulky and it's got no easily definable weaknesses.
Speaking of weaknesses, the team does struggle against certain threats, which are:
Talonflame - Mostly the Banded and SD sets. I have Gyara and Alakazam for the bulky set but I have no dedicated switchin to Talonflame and it's usually an on the fly decision as to how to defeat it.
Specially Defensive TTar - If my two physical mons are fainted, I have only got a very innacurate Focus Blast to deal with it. And even then it doesn't always OHKO. If this is paired with Excadrill and something which counters Conk, it can easily get through this team.
Fast Dark types with Knock Off - Although I have Conk, he's really the only answer to Knock Off spam, and even then he loses out on his AV. Gyarados can somewhat deal with it, but it's not a counter at all!
Importable:
