Hello, world! I'm already registered on Showdown under the same username. I'm 17, and I actually got started with the Mystery Dungeon series (which I still haven't and can't finish due to the 3DS outright refusing to load it). While I did have some Sapphire and Emerald cartridges laying around, I got my start in the main games in the DPP era. After watching a video of a Trollpass sweep, I decided I wanted to unleash the same terror... only to realize that the set in the video no longer worked. Eventually I discovered Balanced Hackmons, and to this day I'm almost a pure OM player. For whatever reason, planning out a unique solution as opposed to vanilla combat really worked well for me. You can find me occasionally on 1v1, Balanced Hackmons, and finally helping develop new OMs and Pet Mods!

Great you decided to join! May I ask what your plans are for your time here at Smogon? Are there any places here you're interested in getting involved in? If you don't have an idea where to start, that's perfectly fine. Smogon offers areas for every type of Pokemon player.
The Competitive Discussion forum is very popular, as that is where discussion of the metagame takes place. If you're more of a competitive Pokemon player, this is the place to go. You can find just about every tier there, so whichever you like, you can get involved with its respective community.
The Rate My Team forum is also a popular place to go, as it is where users go to post teams and get suggestions on how to improve them from experienced players. You don't have to be a really competitive player to post a team; as long as you have a full team and follow the forum rules, you can post if you would like.
The Wi-Fi forum is for Pokemon players who enjoy things like trading, breeding, and Wi-Fi battling in-game. It's a great place to go for collectors because you can find many great Pokemon up for trade.

Welcome to Smogon! Balanced Hackmons was one of the most fun tiers I've ever played. There's a lot of variety and interesting tactics, so it is almost always interesting. 1v1 is one of my other favorite tiers, too, because it's quick and fun.
Have you joined the OM room in Showdown? If not, you might want to consider doing so. It's a great place with a friendly community and the players there are always happy to help if you need it.

Hey fellas, even though I've used this site a ton for comp assistance, I figured I can't just lurk forever. My name is Corey, and I've been playing competitive pokemon for about three years now. Granted, most of that was on a gen 3 MMO with a very strange metagame, but I've been showdowning my way to mediocrity in a variety of newer tiers for the last year or so - mostly, DPP OU and ORAS UU.
I was a frequent contributor in tiering discussions for the aforementioned gen3 meta, but I don't think I know the in's and out's of these newer metagames to hold much weight in discussion at the moment. How's it going? I've only been playing competitively (well, more like semi-competitively) for about two years. Even so, I'm still pretty bad. :[
Lurking really does help a lot with learning the basics of a tier, but I've found trial and error to be the best strategy of learning the metagame. Teambuilding is a very important skill to have in competitive battling, so testing different Pokemon to find which fare well in the tier versus which don't do well is a big help when forming a team.
Viability Rankings are the perfect resource for knowing the best Pokemon to use; you can find the UU one here.
Another way to build teams is by building around a specific pair or trio of Pokemon. These groups usually cover each others' weaknesses well or perform a specific role well together. You may want to check out the UU Cores thread for more information.
Lastly, while starting to learn a tier, you might find yourself in a spot where you don't know where to start building a team. For this, you can use a Sample Teams thread as a possible source of inspiration.

Wow - it's great that you're voiced in two rooms! I've never been to the MOBA room that much, but it seems like a really fun place so I might think about it! Azelf is one of my favourite Pokemon too - it's in my Monotype Psychic team and is kind of a set up and suicide lead. I'd go on but I think I'll keep that to the competitive forums XD
I actually did play Pokemon Pearl but I didn't really like it because I found the story plot quite dull and there wasn't really that much action in it that I had expected. My first game was Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (I played them all :p) in which I used a different starter for each game. It was really fun and I played all the games until Pokemon Black and White 2, when I kinda lost the interest in playing.
Ubers is a really fun meta since there are only a few boundaries, and you can play with almost any mon. You might want to check out this link to see the Ubers discussion that takes place in the forums. Also, you can check out the UU threads that are available. I'm sure you will find them very interesting!

I used to go to normal high school, but I injured my back so I have to be homeschooled. I haven't kept in touch with my friends at school, so it gets lonely... BUT I did get a cat two days ago and he's the best! (I found out I was allergic to cats when I got him, but I love him too much to let him go!)
I love all Pokémon games but the one that touched my heart was Pokémon Platinum!
It was the first battling Pokémon game that I had and I felt like I was an actual trainer... boy do I miss those days...

I'm also on PS a lot, so I can help you! Teambuilding does take patience and practice because nobody can build perfect teams. There are many options! You can check out the competitive threads for the tier you need help in, you can arrange for a conversation between an expert or yourself via the help form, you can sign up for the battling 101 tutoring programme or you can visit the Competitive Tutoring room on the main server.
