Irc doesn't really seem worth it anymore. Most of the people are just idle constantly (pluff, bass) or idle while they play LoL all day (walrein).

Discord is the future IMO. Wouldn't say the same thing for stuff like mafia games since the ability to easily log chats is still too useful but for general purpose chatting it's better than either IRC or Skype.
