General Introduce yourself!

Hi. Sardus21, welcome to Smogon! Congratulations on getting a degree, that's awesome!! I'm curious, have you ever been on Pokémon Showdown? They do a lot of competitive battling and have many rooms designated for specific tiers! Also, you can play competitively on Smogon too! You can check out the Competitive Discussions, and they discuss a lot about Pokémon, etc. Welcome!

How are you doing? LC is a really fun tier to play. Having to use unevolved Pokemon gives the game a different twist that keeps the tier interesting.

My name's Alex and I'm just getting into the competitive scene. I bought a 3DS and picked up X/Y last year - up until then I was still running my R/B and G/S cartridges on my old GBA! Saw the new graphics and had to get involved, it's what 8 year old me only could have dreamed of in the late 90s.

Enjoying how accessible the EV/IV stuff is now. I've played through X/Y AND OR/AS, I'm really getting into the post game stuff. No idea where to begin building a competitive team, as I followed Karen's advice for years (try and win with my favourites!). Safe to say, my Golem, Pinsir, Alakazam, Dragonite, Cloyster and Victreebel are getting creamed online... (spot the genwunner, anyone?)

Looking forward to learning about all this, and hopefully make a few friends along the way.

Nice to meet you! My Pokemon experience went about the same as yours; I exclusively played RSE until I bought a 3DS and Y a little more than a year ago. The mechanics of Generation 6 were completely new to me, as I hadn't even fully grasped those of Generation 3. I never really got used to the gameplay mechanics until I joined Showdown, but even so I'm still pretty mediocre. XD My favorite starter is Torchic, because it was also my first Pokemon ever.
I agree that building a team around your favorite Pokemon is a really fun way to play. However, if you are looking to build a more competitively viable team, you might find the Cores threads a good resource to use to start. You can find the OU one here. In addition, the Teambuilding Guide is a great resource to learn the process of building a team.

i made an account here a couple days ago so i might as well introduce myself,


after playing hundreds of hours of counter strike, i kinda got addicted to competitive games, and after playing smash 4 and melee a ton, i realized that nintendo games have a very interesting competitive side, and that's what brings me to pokemon. i'm new to this whole thing, and my knowledge at the moment is pretty limited, so i should probably hit the books soon and learn how to play this game. my favorite pokemon are probably mightyena (even though he sucks lol), cinccino, and chesnaught. my 3ds is broke so most of my battling will probably be on showdown, although some help building a team would definitely be appreciated.

so thats basically it about me, i'm glad to be here

Welcome to Smogon flaring, glad to see you joined us ! My knowledge of competitive Pokemon was also very limited when I first joined here, but I eventually learned, and now I know a ton, so I hope the same will go for you as well ! If you're interested in gaining more knowledge in competitive 'Mons, I would suggest lurking in the multiple sub-forums of the Competitive Discussion forum. Each sub-forum has a myriad of informational threads you can check out to augment your knowledge along with some threads you yourself can participate in ! Welcome, flaring! I heard you needed team building advice, I recommend possibly the Battling 101 program, or the Competitive Tutoring room on Pokémon Showdown's main server! Also, if you are into Competitive Pokémon, you can look at the Competitive Discussions thread. Welcome, hope you settle in!
 
My name is TwitchWS! I'm very fond of watching Twitch streams. I usually go by TWS, or Twitch, but the latter is far too confusing.

My favourite Pokemon is Mareep, but you usually would see me using Ampharos, or with an Ampharos picture. Kind of unique thing I guess. I was trying to have animated sprite for my avatar, but I couldn't get it to work and it was honestly ticking me off way more than it should have. Guess I need to try that again some other stupid day.

I'm usually pretty shy and feel inadequate compared to other people in general. It's easier for me to talk through a screen, and I like battling with Pokemon, but I don't do it to win, and almost not even for fun. It's just to see what my teams can do. I've been using Pokemon Showdown to battle, but everyone I meet there just insults me for everything, so... um...

Yeah. I'm one of the most casual-est (pretty sure not a word) players of Pokemon you could meet. Nice to meet you guys... let's hope my anxiety doesn't get in my way.

How are you doing? About your avatar issues, was the sprite you were using above 100 KB in size? If so, that's your problem, since images must be below 100 KB. If that's not the case, you could try using another image, such as this one perhaps? Just click on your name in the top right corner of the page, go to Personal Details, and click your current picture to change it. If it still doesn't work, you can PM me if you'd like and I'd be happy to help.
Even if you battle just to see what your Pokemon can do, that doesn't mean it can't also be fun, right? ;) As for rude opponents that may be keeping you from enjoying the game, if it ever gets out of hand, you can always report it to a moderator and they'll deal with the situation appropriately. If it's just some jerk being rude, you can use the Ignore Opponent option in battle to, well, ignore the opponent.
Smogon is a great place once you get to know the community. There's a place for everyone, so don't worry about your anxiety. You'll be fine! :) If you have any trouble here, feel free to PM or VM me. Hello everyone.
My name is Max, and since I made an account here like 6 years ago with the tag FreakShow I guess I'll go by that. I'm a 23 year old university student from Alberta, Canada. Pokemon has always had a special place in my heart. I played semi-competitively in the 4th generation games, which is when I made an account here, but during that time I never really participated in the community much. I didn't play much in generation 5 and thanks to the fact that perfect ivs are achievable without any random number manipulation in the 6th generation I played quite a bit, mostly playing vgc rules. I've been on a bit of a pokemon break lately (maybe a year or so) but I'm looking to get back into it, and I am interested in participating in the community any way I can. Any suggestions for me as I get started in this glorious adventure again?

Congratulations on your first post in 6 years man! What tier do you like best? Start from there and branch out when you feel that you're up for something new. The battle simulator "pokemon showdown" has tons of 'em so you'll never get bored. Visit the respective tierforums for all your needs (information about viable teams, sample teams, good cores, discussions and so on.). Have fun man, if there's a specific question you want to see answered, just ask!

well, i heard from a friend of mine that smogon had things where users would be like, "hey ill breed you an [x] with EVs in [x] and [x] for a shiny [x]" if that exists, can you help me find that?

Are you looking for the WiFi room on Pokémon Showdown? In WiFi they do tons of trades & giveaways, if that's what you mean. There are a few threads on Smogon that may deal with trading and such, but I recommend the WiFi room.

I enjoy competitive battling very much, but am not very good at it myself. I have come to learn and be tutored from a friends recommendation, and perhaps join the community and be a big part of it. (Dreaming Big here). I hope you all are friendly and kind, and I will do my best to return the sentiments.

P.S. My favorite pokemon is the ever popular Greninja, others being mostly lots of pokemon in general. you'd be hard pressed to find a Pokemon I outright dislike (Barring Farfetch'd and pokemon like that)
