[LCT Round 2] Ooraloo vs. Stary02939

Rules
Pokemon: 3v3
Format: Singles
DQ: Strict 72h Disqualification. One warning per player. After the warning is used (any tag after DQ interval is passed will be counted as warning), the Player has one hour to post (with full orders/pokemon, just saying "orders coming watch this space" doesn't suffice) after DQ is called to rescind it. If one hour passes, the player is DQ'd regardless of the ref posting or not. User calling DQ must tag DQ'd player. Referees please tag the combatants when you have finished your reffing. Players, if you know you're going to be away you better post a Leave of Absence BEFORE you leave, or give a very good reason in case of an emergency.

Arena
The ASB Tournament Arena
Field Type: Neutral
Complexity: Simple
Format: All

Restrictions: No Restrictions

Description: Surrounded by thousands of screaming Pokémon fans, the ASB Arena can be best described as a standard Pokémon battling arena. In the centre of the arena lies a dirt-based floor outlined to show two separate sides (with a white Poké Ball centre). Surrounding the dirt is a moat filled with water. The moat is about 4.5m wide & creates a perimeter around the dirt arena. The arena itself is 24m wide, 33m long. All moves, weathers, and abilities are legal for the match, since it is an outdoor arena with a large water source & packed dirt. Pokémon must stay in the arena (or the dimensions of the arena in the case of Flying-type Pokémon, who cannot leave the arena & cannot fly higher than 18m). This prevents Pokémon from injuring the crowd watching the tournament. There are no outside interruptions by fans, Pokémon, or other elements not associated with the current battle.

And we kick off round 2 here in our Little Cup Tournament with a match between two relative newcomers. Ooraloo is coming off a strong showing in round 1, and brings the same core to this fight. Stary on the other hand suffered an unfortunate DQ due to circumstances but had quite a mountain to overcome in the match anyway. This time around his strangely named Breakfast the Togepi looks to be the potential star player as opposed to the little bit of dead weight it was last round. As always in singles the matchups will be crucial, and one of the most important portions of that is the initial turn order. So in honour of both trainers bringing along a fairy, let us flip the Flabébé.

Front = Ooraloo, Back = Stary

A round that looked pretty bad for Stary on paper basically ended up in a bit of a draw. Sure being taunted and facing a Light Screen aren't great options for Gastly, but even with that Future Sight factored in he still barely won the damage race. The ball is now in Ooraloo's court to see what he does next.

"So, um, this doesn't exactly help me, but I feel obligated to point out that my sub said:
IF Skill Swap OR Light Screen AND you are faster AND you are not Taunted AND Mime Jr is not already taunted THEN Taunt and push back
Which means that Gastly should have used Struggle A2. Which means this round was for me just as bad as it looked."

Ooraloo seems to forget the fact that he's ordering against a Taunted Gastly and burns a bunch of subs that probably weren't necesarry, but he still does a ripper of a job laying the hurt on Gastly anyway. In fact the Ghost looks like it's just going to escape by the skin of its teeth, but at least it is relatively safe to do so given Ooraloo's lack of entry hazards. Time to see if one of Stary's benched Pokemon is actually a surprising Mime counter, because otherwise its about to order second again and that always spells disaster.

Mime Jr spends rather a lot of energy frantically trying to keep Gastly alive, which is a somewhat strange turn of events. It seems Ooraloo was especially keen to avoid that Destiny Bond and has succeeded in setting Gastly up to Strugle next action and be an easy KO. See how shit Encore is?

Ooraloo is able to use the set up from the previous round to be very safe and secure ordering first, and even though Mime has to take some tiny amounts of chip damage its all in all looking pretty good, and sitting pretty being able to order second against a new mon.

Struggle's description says "Struggle can be ordered at any time."

Struggle cannot be ordered in-game and can only be used if your mon is forced to Struggle due to lack of PP or encore + torment/disable. Because of that, I took this part of the description this to mean "Struggle can be used in your orders even when your Pokémon is not in a situation where it is forced to Struggle;" in other words, you can order Struggle just like any other move.

However, this could also mean:
To the best of my knowledge Struggle cannot be prevented under any means. This is the "Struggle can always be ordered" part of the NDA description.
Ordered =/= used imo, but I see where deadfox is coming from. Would like to know which interpretation is correct.

It means you can order it like any other move. This is mostly because ordering an illegal move can and will result in Struggle.

This does nothing to change the round. If it were any other move encored than Struggle you would spend the two actions struggling. You cannot use the fact that it is Struggle encored to backdoor your way into using other attacks. Mowtom's post doesn't even support your point of view. You Struggle for two actions, as refereed. Please send out a new Pokemon and order Stary02939

I'm not using the fact that Struggle is Encored as the basis of my argument. NDA says that Torment prevents you from using an attack you used last round. Struggle is an attack. It does not say that Struggle is exempted from Torment. I used Struggle last round. Therefore, I cannot use Struggle this round. If a different move were Encored I would still be unable to Struggle because I am Tormented and I used Struggle last round.

You believe that Struggle cannot be prevented, and cite "Struggle can be ordered at any time" as evidence. And I kinda see why this makes sense. But ordered =/= used, so I don't think that this line says anything about whether Struggle can be prevented. Further, Struggle cannot be ordered in-game, but can be ordered in ASB, so it makes sense that this line was intended to mean, "you can order Struggle like any other move" and not "Struggle can't be prevented."

So we disagree. So I went and asked for more opinions, specifically asking, "does 'Struggle can be ordered at any time' mean X or Y?" In response, Mowtom said "It means X." In a vacuum that might not support my point of view, but in context, Mowtom's post implies "it means X, not Y."

Lastly, I am not trying to backdoor my way into using other attacks. If I cannot Struggle and cannot use any other move, I cannot do anything. The attack fails. I did not write Sludge Bomb - Dark Pulse - Sludge Bomb with the intention to use Sludge Bomb and Dark Pulse on actions one and two, but rather because I had to put something in for those two actions. It doesn't matter what I wrote for those actions because I can't do anything those actions no matter what.

The problem here is occurring from the interpretation of Struggle as a move. Struggle is not a move. Struggle is a default action for a Pokemon that cannot execute it's move under a given set of circumstances. Struggle is the placeholder result that occurs when that failure occurs. It is codified as a move because there needs to be values associated with using it for the purposes of our game. Furthermore, ASB deviates from in-game, allowing Struggle to act as a move for the purpose of ordering. This does not invalidate its other characteristics. Struggle can be ordered as if it were a move, yes, but Struggle is not subject to the same limitations as other moves because it is the default placeholder. If Struggle (move) is Tormented and unable to be used it is replaced by Struggle (default action). Struggle will always be the end result.

In-game verification:
[11:57:18] <Texas> hey marty
[11:57:22] <Texas> quick question
[11:57:29] <Texas> can struggle be prevented by torment
[12:02:57] <Marty> hey Texas, nope

FishEdit: I'm also confirming this. Struggle is Struggle - it is the only action in ASB which can never be prevented.
