Convulsions of Nature- Competitive Terrain Discussion

Does anyone know how Swagger works in Misty Terrain now that confusion is nullified? It would be a pretty killer setup move for Tapu Fini if Swagger still boosts Attack without the confusion downside.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of the Terrains seems to be Alolan Raichu. It reaps benefits from each terrain and doesn't lose momentum when another terrain replaces the current one.

Electric: STAB Power Boost, Speed Boost allows it to run Modest for more power and still outspeed everything.
Psychic: STAB Power Boost, immunity to Sucker Punch and Shadow Sneak.
Grassy: decreased damage from Earthquake and Grass Knot coverage boost
Misty: status immunity in general

Raichu @ Life Orb
Ability: Surge Surfer
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest nature
-Thunderbolt
-Psyshock
-Grass Knot / Focus Blast
-Nasty Plot

A set that works well on every terrain so you won't be screwed when another Tapu switches in.

Weird question, but what do you guys think of Nature Power for Terrain Teams? Are there Pokemon who you think might enjoy coverage under terrain that they lack otherwise, or it it too situational?

I tried to find something that would like Fairy, Psychic, Grass, or Electric coverage in OU but I've come up short. I'm sure something out there would like having a solid Fairy or Grass coverage move but yeah idk what. It'll probably have it's uses on full terrain teams but otherwise it'd be a waste of a move slot, especially since all 4 Tapu look like they're gonna be OU so the terrain will probably be switched up a lot more than rain or sand in any given battle.

So hey! Just checked the research thread, and one of our Terrain based questions got answered! During Misty Terrain, Swagger will boost the Attack of the target sharply, but will NOT get them confused! For those looking into VGC, Consider running Swagger Tapu Fini to give your ally a surprise boost!

That's awesome, exactly the answer I was hoping for. Thanks for keeping us posted, Count!

Tapu Fini new Swagkeys counter?

Something I mentioned in Tapu Fini's thread is that it seems an invaluable trapper, learning two trapping moves on level up and protecting your ground based sweepers from status. For a set I'd say:

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers/Eject Button
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Mean Look/Whirlpool
- Taunt/Haze
- Defog
- Coverage

Defog offers utility late game with offence. Mean Look might be advantageous over Whirlpool as it does no damage so if you're looking to set up one mon against a certain opposing mon it has no risk of fainting. Taunt and Haze stop opposing set up sweepers. Eject Button can be used to arrive at a sweeper immediately.

I think the downside is that it's fairly useless in terms of damage on an offence team, on the other hand the status free turns it allows guarantee one free set-up turn (maybe two if you sneaky about it, use a berry against a anticipated super-effective type attack against that mon to get an extra boost for example). It makes fighting offence against it a little binary in fact, as you now need your own terrain to wipe away misty terrain or you need Roar/Whirlwind - if you make your sweeper capable of dealing with a broad spectrum of Roar/Whirlwind users after a boost then you now have a solid win-con, particularly if it outspeeds Tapu Lele and has priority to nip people in the bud.

I'm curious, does Misty Seed activate before or after Misty Surge? If so, it might also be worthwhile.

Haven't seen anyone mention that Secret Power under Grassy Terrain has a 30% chance of causing sleep. Could be interesting with a Serene Grace user, I suppose.

Hmmmm... ParaFlinchSleep?

Hey, thanks for pointing this out.

Does anyone know all the information about Secret Power & Nature Power effects on each terrain move?

Unless it changed in Gen 7:
Nature Power in Grassy Terrain becomes Energy Ball and Secret Power causes sleep
Nature Power in Misty Terrain becomes Moonblast and Secret Power lowers Sp. Atk 1 stage
Nature Power in Electric Terrain becomes Thunderbolt and Secret Power paralyses.
No idea about Psychic Terrain although I would assume NP becomes Psychic and SP causes confusion.

Well, Thought I should give some examples of Megas under Terrain influence, here we are:

319-mega.gif

Mega Sharpedo
Ability: Strong Jaw
252 ATK/ 252 Spe / 4 HP
Adamant/ Jolly Nature
Waterfall
Crunch/Psychic Fangs
Protect
Ice Fang

Under the cover of Psychic Terrain, Sharpedo and his new toy of Psychic Fangs are allowed to knash through pokemon like butter. Once Terrain is set up and Sharpeo gains a speed boost, You can attack with Double STAB Psychic Fangs on foes like Conkledurr or Machamp, pokemon that used to be sure switch ins, downright vanish without a trace. No need to fear Vacuum Wave or Mach Punch, and with a speed boost or 2, very few pokemon outside of Scarfs can actually keep up with Sharpedo's speed. Ice Fang is still needed to deal with Salamence and Landorus. Crunch is steal as good as it always was, but can be swapped with Psychic Fangs for Bonus damage. Waterfalls is to hit what the other two moves do now.
Actually, I have a question, do we know if Sharpedo gets Liquidation? If so, that could be a good stand-in for waterfall.

If I had to take a guess, I would say Psybeam?

It does. Waterfall is probably still better for the flinch chance on a fast mon like Sharpedo, it can't really always take advantage of the defence drop since it's so frail.
