Can Playstation2's just die...?

I've had it for a little over a year. And...it seems to not be working anymore. :cloud:

I'll put the disc in (I've tried several at this point...no ripped ones), and I'll push the power button, but the motor won't kick in...in other words, the disc won't spin. I've tried blowing in it, in case there was a lot of dust (doubtful) and as I thought, that didn't work. So did the motor just crap out? That's pretty lame if that's true. Has this happened to you? Is it an easy fix? What are your suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Welcome to the world of disc read errors.
Population: about as many victims as victims of RRoD on 360.

If it's over a year, you're out of luck. You're outside the manufacturer's warranty.

My Gamecube had a problem like this...except the case was that the laser thing to read the discs had weakened and couldn't do it anymore...

Chances are that there isn't much you can do.

I should add that I don't have any solutions for this except that its not a disc read error, I've had TONS of experience with those :/

Sorry inferior Matt

Wait so it doesn't come with the message either? My GCN disc read error had it so the disc didn't spin, but it would come up with a message saying "Disc Read Error". But I live right by Nintendo of Canada and they fixed it for me both times, even though I wasn't in warranty the second.

I'm curious now that you mentioned you're experienced with disc read errors...

My Killer 7 disc says it can't be read whenever I enter a certain part of a certain level. Will disc cleaner be a worthwhile purchase? I don't think I see a scratch, but there very well could be.

(I'm playing it on a wii)

Disk Doctor Kits are very good investments. The don't cost much and apply the amount of preasure just right to clean the disk on their own without potential damage.

As for the PS2 issue GreenPikachu, what your saying could be the result of a plethora of issues, and since I don't have it in front of me to examine, I can't label a particular one, nor can anyone else unfortunately. So take it in to a professional. They will most likely need to take it appart if the problem isn't with the AC, so be sure to get something in writing to keep the liability on them if that's the case, so if you take it somewhere else for one reason or another and find that they had caused further damage to the system.

As for a hypothesis, like I said there's plenty of options, but if I'd have to pick a few of the common ones I'd say it could just be a problem with the AC cable. That's what happened to about two of the coustomers at my old job at GameStop. Course if I had to guess I'd say they were playing during a lightning storm because the cable's had short circuit issues. But somebody who's local and knows what they're doing can definately give you a better diagnosis.

Whydo you think Sony sold many of those things? Because everyone who bought one had to buy two more.

Unfortunately I've only had experience with PS2 DREs. I've fixed my own about 6 times and a few friends a couple of times as well, the new slim PS2s don't seem to have this problem though

What? Really? Isn't the RRoD like, one in four now? I'm pretty sure if PS2s were failing that hard, we'd hear about it... or is this leftovers from an issue they had before?

Um, you just probably haven't frequented gaming forums much in the past 7 years. PS2s dying was a pretty huge issue. There was a class action lawsuit filed against Sony. Sony lost.

I'm not sure about a Wii, but the same thing happened for me on Lego Star Wars 2 on a Gamecube.

Taking the disc out then putting it back in would fix it

I think your PS2 is done for. I know two people that had a similar problem like you (but they had their PS2s for a longer period of time), and the PS2s never worked again.

On that note, I am surprised my PS2 from Christmas two years ago still works. Since I brought it to college, it's been non-stop Madden, Battlefront, Guitar Hero/ Movies.

the standard PS2 owner goes through about 3-4 PS2 systems on average.

Probably why most people are hesitant to buy the $500 PS3.

Thats surprising, and here I always thought of Sony as a trustworthy service. I've had mine since about 2002, and still works near perfectly.

Part luck, part how well you treat your system. Sony isn't exactly known for their durability, though. Or PR for that matter, "unresponsive square button is a feature" and whatnot...

Nintendo products are fucking tanks. \m/ GameCube's only weakness is the disk reading laser, dunno about the Wii.

so is it disc read error or it doesnt start up

if its disc read eroor u can get it fixed for like $50
but first try to open it and clean ALL dust of it and it may work

PS3 is actually pretty sturdy. This gen it's just the 360s that are dying.
