So here's the rundown, our biggest problem is our defensive line just has not had any athleticism for yeeeeeeeaars. For whatever reason Belichick as a GM has just never been interested in getting the kinds of players who can dominate at the line in pass rushing situations (for example he prefers Dtackles who can shed blockers sideways to stop runs even if they physically can't pass rush); maybe this is because he thinks he can coach them into generating cheesy pass rush with stunt schemes or cover for it with a good secondary. Who knows. Usually he gets away with that given how every year he manages to eke more out of the Patriots D as they go from bad to average to flashes of good as the season goes on. But this year our BEST lineman is Tre Flowers who would be a rotation role player ANYWHERE else, we're just flat STARVED of talent on the DLine.

Now we HAD great linebackers for a while to cover for this up front deficiency with guys like Mayo Collins and Hightower- guys who were ridiculously good at blitzing partially because of smart blitz design and calls but also because of speed and explosiveness of their rush. However, Mayo has retired, Collins was traded, and Hightower is just coming back off injury leaving us with just second string special teamers who have no lateral movement and just don't belong on an NFL field at that position. So you consistently see us get gashed to short passes to running backs covered by a linebacker or even see shit like cam having an empty pocket for 4 seconds as he throws bombs to Kelvin Benjamin despite the Patriots sending a linebacker blitz. The line and the linebackers are so slow off the snap that it just looks like a wave crashing on a wall and collapsing on itself. They just can't generate any leverage against blockers who have already taken a step back and anchored themselves when they're still a half step away.

On top of all those problems out secondary just exists in a state of pure incompetence. While they're a talented group they're just miserable idiots. Butler is a much hyped guy because lul Seattle but hes as likely to make a brilliant play as he is to bite on the most basic route fake in existence. A great example of how "what the fuck" they are is Cams interception. Everyone has been trying to ride Cam for such a boneheaded throw cuz he threw it right to Butler, but if you look at the play Butler was supposed to be covering Funchess and left him wide fucking open to instead follow Byrd up and double cover and harry him with Eric Rowe which slows Byrd down enough that Butler was able to beat him to the ball. What would've been a man to man one on one with no safety help with Rowe being beat off the line ends up being a dumbass looking interception. But with two bodies in the way and how QUICKLY Butler gave up on covering Funchess and how small Butler is as a human Cam just didn't see him nor did he expect him cuz Christ what kind of stupid ass play IS THAT. Butlers either playing Ed Reed levels of 10 dimensional chess or the coverage was just completely blown because Butler thought he had the deep zone while Eric Rowe thought they were playing man coverage and Cam got burned for expecting actual competence. Given how often coverages were just completely blown leaving guys wide open this game for similar man and zone coverage mixups I'm gonna go with the latter.

TL;DR Our front seven are slow and unathletic and our secondary is playing like absolute idiots who don't have a single clue as to what's going on. We're a glorious fucking mess on defense and I personally have decided to enjoy every second of constant indescribable incompetence and failure.

Maybe the first two, but Bortles has looked better so far this year. Definitely is firmly in the bottom five though. It probably is, but he's been off for years now. It's time we draft a qb and don't waste such a talented d. It's also time we have a new fitness or training regime, cause leading the league in IR players 3 years running (at this stage, we could always be overtaken this year) doesn't seem like a freak conincidence.
 
The Pats defense will probably improve enough to be ranked in the mid 20s and the Pats will go 12-4 with a bye.

The offense/Brady is good enough to carry them

I'm more worried about all the hits Brady is taking tbh

It's tough to know for sure if Butler did recognize the play fully or was not on the same page on coverage (blown). Funchess didn't move at all after that first step and Butler may have been watching Cam for an instant. I'm sure it's more on the side of luck though. Funchess shoulda just ran forward after Butler ditched him, as Cam might have actually seen him and gone for the 1st instead of that long ball (I'm surprised he didn't see him wide open anyway, but whatever).

Rams with the most points will be noticed. They'll crack the top. Not sure if NE will drop out fully, it's due. Packers might be rated lower due to injuries. Steelers have to climb slowly. Bills and Panthers are 3-1, so they go up into the list.

Yeah but look at the video again and watch for the head turns to see where eyeballs are looking. Cam quickly looks to see what happens to Byrd at the line, and sees a quick shove from Rowe and what he presumes will be a footrace on the right side. Now he probably knew it was man coverage pre snap but let's say he didn't he still looks immediately away to the left side and goes through a quick progression seeing man coverage there and baiting the safety to that side. He takes a fast glance back looking to see how the go route developed between Byrd and Rowe and he sees Rowe even with and falling behind Byrd (Butler at this time is behind those two bodies in Cams sightline, Cam has no clue he's there), Cam now having baited the safety to the left instantly decides to pull the trigger on what he thought was a great play resetting his feet and launching. Yes he never checks Funchess but I think this is a designed play where Funchess is supposed to be bait to keep his guy low beneath the go route, maybe Funchess did a bad job of selling and Butler knew instantly from that, but keep in mind Butler never saw Cam look towards his side of the field; his eyes start on Funchess sees him lazily turn for a 'screen' and then Butler looks to Byrd (Not Cam who is already looking left to bait the Safety anyway) and he INSTANTLY without hesitation starts sprinting up nearly in front of Byrd after Rowe jams Byrd at the line. If Butler is playing zone this decision makes sense because the guy he's lined up against doesn't release and he assumes Rowe has the right side flat so he goes with the guy running deep. If he's playing man coverage, then he's basically the new Ed Reed instantly diagnosing play design based off of Funchess not releasing and nigh nothing else and free lancing to make a fucking ridiculous play.

Makes sense to see the Pats finally drop. The Skins also feel like the most complete 2-2 team right now so I'm okay with seeing them where they are.

Yup, for sure Funchess did a bad job. If he had moved more, Butler probably would have stayed on him.

We'll never know for sure if Butler didn't scan Newton for a millisecond as he turned, but what doesn't help his case was the fact there was a man deep (suggesting he should have stayed on Funchess) on his way to Byrd's side.

Newton probably would have gotten the ball out sooner though, and Funchess would have at least turned a bit. So that may have been enough for Butler to realize the ball was going deep the whole time and made the decision to double.
